Evidence Eliminator

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET Staff on February 27, 2009

This privacy-protection utility boasts just about all the features we like to see, although its design scheme could use some work. It isn't immediately clear how to configure and run Evidence Eliminator, but the Options button is where you'll do most of your work. Of course, the application can scrub away Web-surfing tracks from several browsers, including Internet Explorer, Netscape, and Opera. In addition to cleaning common areas of your Windows system, the program supports many third-party programs. Curiously, though, the only chat client it can clean is AIM. You can wipe away all tracks or shred files according to several secure algorithms, and you can run the application in stealth mode. Also, though Evidence Eliminator lacks a scheduling feature, maintenance tools such as a Registry cleaner and a junk-file eliminator help compensate. However, it may not be ideal for multitaskers, as we experienced some sluggishness when the program was doing its work. Though Evidence Eliminator's $149 price tag seems a bit absurd, it offers enough pluses to at least warrant a try.

"Not compatible with Windows 7 as advertised"

    October 22, 2011  |   By borkkky

    Version: Evidence Eliminator 5.057

    Pros

    None. Does not clean.

    Cons

Does not work with Windows 7: it cannot clean the system, all the history from websites remain on your computer. This is now a very dated privacy software, they have plugg in from 1990s on it. Very poor customer support, I know more than them and I know nothing about computers!

    Summary

Dated software for old operating systems and computers. Do not waste time and money on it if you have Windows 7. Do not trust when they say it is compatible with Windows 7. They actually admitted to me that certain features (which is cleaning the web browser history) do not work with Windows 7!!?? So what is the point of having it?

    I can't reach my D:\ disk-partiticion.
Software installed does not work properlyl.
I can not use my documents anymore.

"DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! IT'S GARBAGE! WORTHLESS!"

    June 5, 2011  |   By Azhrarn27

    Version: Evidence Eliminator 5.057

    Pros

None. I never even had a chance to use the program because it failed to install properly and then wrecked my PC when I tried to uninstall it.

    Cons

The installation failed saying a component was missing. Now how is that, when I downloaded the file directly from their website? So I tried to uninstall, and that failed too. Within two weeks I was getting BSOD errors and had to reinstall Windows.

    Summary

About a year ago I had Windows reinstalled on my PC. I maintained my Comodo firewall and antivirus and never had a virus. I used system restore on a regular basis. My PC worked perfectly for that year, even though I installed and uninstalled all types of software on a regular basis. Never had a problem - until I decided to try EE. The installation failed, which was bad enough, but then in the process of trying to completely uninstall EE it damaged my PC. I normally use Revo Uninstaller, and EE prematurely terminated the uninstall and forced a shutdown of my PC. I tried to use system restore as a last resort, but it no longer worked. My Windows became unstable and almost immediately began acting strangely. Within a week I had a Blue Screen of Death. Again, my PC had worked perfectly for almost a year until then.

If you go to their website, they blame everyone and everything except their own poorly written software. They claim that EE doesn't install correctly if Windows is corrupt, when the truth is that EE corrupts Windows. After jumping through a million hoops, I finally managed to send them an email asking for tech support and a full refund. I never received a response.

Their solution to every problem seems to be to reinstall Windows. As if the average person even knows how to do that. Most people will have to pay hundreds of dollars to have Windows reinstalled, assuming they have even kept all of their installation discs. And how can you put a price on lost data?

I was lucky. I had most of my data backed up on portable drives, and managed to salvage the rest before my PC died. And I had every single installation disc and driver I needed. I paid a friend $40 to reinstall Windows for me, and then managed to troubleshoot and resolve the few remaining installation problems myself.

The bottom line is that I paid $75 for software that ruined my PC and almost cost me a year's worth of work and research and personal files.

Listen to the voice of experience and don't fall for the hype. If you have any concerns about your online privacy, learn how to configure a router properly, use proxies and encryption software, but whatever you do don't use this poorly written malicious software.

I've just read through all of the reviews, trying to figure out why so many people gave EE a high score. It's because they're FAKE REVIEWS! If you notice, almost everyone who "likes" the program is copying and pasting the bs marketing hype from the website. It's ridiculous that CNET doesn't do anything about this. If those fake reviews were all removed this product's score would be a 1.

"have used the software for about 8 yrs it works"

    January 10, 2010  |   By stevexxx34

    Version: Evidence Eliminator 5.057

    Pros

    the software does work,

    Cons

it does have a poor appearance and is a little cumbersome to set up initially.

    Summary

l was involved in a case where my computer was siezed by the police ,and was found to be of no use to them ,even after extensive investigation. it is very easy to down load things that you do not want,or for others to use your computer to down load things without your knowledge ( do you realy know what your children have been down loading ,after they have deleted their files ) like most soft ware it can crash, but it is doing a complex opperation with a vast range of differing situations user to user. the pop up is a pain and assumption very wrong in its context and in its self a very black mark against robin hood sostware!

    "Good idea but.."

    April 7, 2009  |   By InsaneJediGirl

    Version: Evidence Eliminator 5.057

    Pros

    N/A........

    Cons

    N/A........

    Summary

You can't really just delete stuff off a computer, anyone with a bit of knowledge and Forensic software can bring it back. Just a false sense of security in my opinion.

"Have had it for 5 years."

    November 30, 2008  |   By TeleViz

    Version: Evidence Eliminator 5.057

    Pros

It seems to do what it says but takes forever.

    Cons

I now have it on Vista. It takes over 24 hrs to complete. It is version 6.0 though.

    Summary

They need to do some work with it. More updates needed. Must have a few bugs if it takes 24 hrs on Vista to work. With better engineering it could work much faster.

    "EE IS NOT INVINCIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    November 6, 2008  |   By HARRISON50

    Version: Evidence Eliminator 5.057

    Pros

I LIKE THAT IT DOES MORE THAN ANY OTHER PRODUCT OF ITS KIND.

    Cons

EE WILL NOT ERASE A FILE THAT CONTAINS A QUESTION MARK ???? OR AN ASTERISK *******.

    Summary

RECENTLY I DOWNLOADED A FILE THAT'S NAME CONTAINED MULTIPLE ????????????? FROM LIMEWIRE. EE WOULD NOT ERASE THE FILE. I HAD TO DELETE THE ENTIRE FOLDER AND THEN USE WEBROOT'S WINDOW WASHER TO SECURELY DELETE THE FILE FOLDER AND ITS CONTENTS INSIDE THE REYCLE BIN. EE'S INTERFACE AND LOG RECORD A MESSAGE STATING THAT THE FILE IS EITHER NOT A WINDOWS FILE OR IS CORRUPT. EE ALSO FAILED TO ERASE THE LINK OR .lnk FILE THAT WAS CREATED CITING THE SAME REASONS. I FINALLY DID A SEARCH FOR ALL FILES AND FOLDERS NAMED "RECENT" AND DELETED ALL THESE TO THE RECYCLE BIN AND THEN USED WINDOW WASHER TO SECURELY DELETE THE .lnk FILES. IN CONTACTED EE CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM WITH THE SAME DETAIL AS HERE AND I WAS TOLD TO RUN CHKDSK. RUNNING CHKDSK DID NOT HELP. WHEN I INFORMED EE CUSTOMER SUPPORT THAT IT DID NOT HELP THEY SENT ME BACK THE SAME MESSAGE THREE TIMES. FINALLY, I TOLD EE CUSTOMER SUPPORT I WOULD INFORM CNET, ET AL., THAT THE MIGHTY EE HAD FINALLY BEEN DEFEATED.

I WISH TO MAKE THIS CLEAR. EE WILL NOT ERASE A FILE OR A SHORTCUT THAT CONTAINS ????? OR ************. IT IS NOT THE BE-ALL, END-ALL, THAT IS CLAIMS TO BE.

    "Okay!!"

    December 19, 2007  |   By Bloodreignoffire

    Version: Evidence Eliminator 5.057

    Pros

I liked the interface it was okay, different. I give it two stars being a good guy and all.

    Cons

The web site is sh*t Spyware Doctor pops up saying it is possibly molicious witch it is, bad marketing. You will find alot of bad information about the program on google. It may clean well, but suspect not well enough, just use CyberScrub -or- East-Tec Eraser (witch are the same program made by the same maker on too different continents) they do the same from a fraction of the price and are well known and given a 5 star rating from Download.com. $149.95 is crazy and down right stupid, the new version is 6.0 and given for $ 70 some odd dollars. If you like it then use it but use with caution it can mess up your computer if you don't know what you are doing.
