This small software application bypasses Windows search with a lightning quick interface and real-time results for all of the files and folders in your local hard drive or any subsection of it. The software doesn't do much more than search, but its efficiency, effectiveness, stability, and low system resource usage make it a keeper utility.
The software is split into two main controls: the search box and the results page. When you first run Everything, it will create an index of all the files and folders on your machine. Unless you have millions of files, the index will be created before you know it. Searching is done in real time, as you type--i.e. the search term "rad" returns 379 objects, "radio" returns 160, and "radiohead" returns 71, all instantly.
The results screen can display seven different fields: Name, Path, Size, Last Write Time, Creation Time, Last Access Time, and Attributes. Sorting by any field takes a little longer than searching, but only slows down noticeably when you sort more than 1,000 results.
Everything also lets users connect to HTTP, FTP, or ETP (Everything Transfer Protocol) servers to allow remote searches, but its functionality is mostly singular--searching your local PC very quickly with minimal resources, and it accomplishes that well. If you've never struggled with Windows search before, you might pass Everything by; if your computer is a disorganized mess with files all over the place, Everything might be a wonderful gift.
Publisher's description
From voidtools :Everything is a search engine for Windows that replaces the normal Windows search with a much faster one. Unlike Windows search, Everything initially displays every file and folder on your computer. You can type in a search filter to limit what files and folders are displayed. Everything only uses file and folder names and generally takes a few seconds to build its database. 1,000,000 files will take about 1 minute.

Version: Everything 1.1.4.301
"Fast but no replacement for Windows Search"
Pros: It's very fast
Cons: It only indexes file names, not file content like Windows Search, X1,
Google Desktop or Copernic SearchSummary: As soon as I realized Everything indexes file names [not file content] I un-installed and replaced it with my current free favorite, Copernic Search version 2.3

Version: Everything 1.1.4.301
Pros: Very fast.
Cons: - It searches only NTFS volumes. All my data is on an external FAT32 drive.
- It only indexes file names.
By contrast, Google Desktop and Gallileo index file content, and handle both NTFS and FAT32 partitions.Summary: I have no use for a search utility that finds only file names, only on NTFS drives. There are more useful free search utilities.

Cons: I have not found anything that I could qualify as a negative, and hope that I won't.
Summary: Works, is fast, and simply does the job.

Version: Everything 1.1.4.301
Pros: Does exactly what it says and FAST! You only need to type in a part of the file name you are looking for and every file with that as a portion of the name comes up. This finds files of any format. Great for finding files that you didn't intend to sta
Cons: None that I can think of.
Summary: One great thing is that it even searches my portable hard drive, if it is attached, simultaneously. No special parameters are necessary, just type in the approximate file name and every hit with the search name as part of the file name comes up inst... read more >>
