CNET Editors' note: Time-limited beta
CNET Editors' review
If you're looking for a powerful alternative e-mail client, basic and power users alike will find Eudora's functions and features well within their standards. Those thinking about switching to Eudora need not worry: importing your contacts from Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express is a breeze. The interface, though not especially pretty, uses the tried-and-true format of almost every e-mail client, with mailboxes on the left and messages in the main screen. After a quick setup, Eudora does especially well finding, filtering, and managing multiple accounts. Also, built-in, powerful spam filters and the ability to concentrate message threads are both useful features. We like Eudora's method of offering three modes as a means to pay for the program. You can pay for it and have no ads, use the full program in sponsored mode with rotating ads that are easy to ignore, or use it in lite mode, which gives you less features with only one static ad. Those searching for an alternative to Outlook or other big-name e-mail clients will find Eudora a feature-packed and highly capable solution.Publisher's Description
From Qualcomm:
Eudora is a robust e-mail client whose features include multiple address-book-formatting options and the ability to filter, redirect, and forward mail. It supports QuickTime- and HTML-enriched e-mail, letting you include stylized, formatted text and in-line graphics in your messages. Other features include a multipane interface; background mail-checking and sending; the ability to import existing settings, e-mail, and address books from Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, or Netscape mail programs; a Qualcomm PureVoice plug-in that allows voice-message exchanges; and a customizable interface, including movable, dockable window groups and toolbars. Eudora also features support for regular expressions in filters, field autocompletion, an automatic spelling checker, and a filter that will speak the name and subject of incoming messages (requires sound card).
Version 7.0.1 includes powerful new features to combat spam, function offline, combat scams and improve security.
Note: This program can operate in any of three user-selectable modes. Sponsored mode allows you to use the full-featured Eudora e-mail client at no charge, but displays a series of static onscreen advertisements. Paid mode allows you to use the full-featured Eudora e-mail client without advertisements once a payment has been made. Light mode is an upgrade to the current Eudora Light, but it does not have as many features as the full client available in Sponsored and Paid modes. Light mode will include a sponsor image or logo but no rotating advertising. You can switch between Light mode and Sponsored mode at any time.

"It is easy to use"
Version: Eudora 7.0.1
Pros
1) I had been using Eudora for many years but recent I have changed to Microsoft outlook because after many years the sorting was not working.
2) Can not read Chinese wording. Only plain text.Cons
1) Easy to use
2) The attachment was in the separate folder. -
"Professional"
Version: Eudora 7.0.1
Pros
Probably the best e-mail client available today! It does everything gracefully and professionally. It is my favourite e-mail client, along with DreamMail, which is free, but worth at least $90! if they were charging for it. High recommended for sure!
Cons
Better skins would spice it up.

"Still the best email program out there, hands down"
Version: Eudora 7.0.1
Pros
It's still the best! Been using some others every now and then and always come back to the original version. This version 7.1.0.9 is something totally different in positive sense than the new Eudora v8.0.0.beta3(Thunderbird, Penelope). Especially i like the super fast index search (in Paid mode, powered by X1)and the GUI: the embedded message preview pane where you can read and compose your messages (tabbed windows possible). The user interface is very nice looking, especially the icons, that you can also change to the "Old Eudora Icons" just by copying one file to Eudora Program Folder. (See ExtraStuff folder under Eudora folder.) Supports Gmail (SSL, StartSSL) and possibly some other similars too.
It will work with Vista very well, if you just install it as administrator, either shut down the UAC in Vista or just simply install Eudora in non-default location, for example c:\eudora , and set the Eudora data folder path also non-default during install! Plus, I have been using Eudora in compability mode (windows xp sp2), and "run as administrator" and still have the UAC on in Vista. Works like a charm!
For those who didn't know how to use it, like the previous poster, i recommend a complete user guide for download:
See eudora dot com, support, eudora manuals.

"Useless"
Version: Eudora 7.0.1
Pros
Nothing
Cons
I was hoping for a change from Windows Mail as WM in Vista it constantly is "Not Responding" on initial load. Eudora is useless, though. I thought I downloaded the "free" version, but come to find out there's different versions. You can have all sorts of features IF you let them display ads. The "Lite" version is less features, no ads. The problem is I see no way of creating an account. I thought by clicking under "Tools > Mailboxes" but nothing happens. I tried to look in help but get an error that Help could not be launched. I think I'll be downloading Thunderbird and trying that out. Just don't waste your time on Eudora.

"Eudora is no longer sold or supported......this link should be removed."
Version: Eudora 7.0.1
Pros
Quote from web site.........
Qualcomm is no longer selling or providing technical support for Eudora.
The Paid mode commercial versions of Eudora are no longer available. The Sponsored mode versions of Eudora continue to be available for download. An open source version of Eudora is being developed by Mozilla and will be free of charge.
Cons
Shame this has happened.......... I used the advert mode in the past and it was a good client.

"A great and stable email application with one major issue"
Version: Eudora 7.0.1
Pros
Eudora is very stable and reliable. It offers good filtering capabilities, a decent ability to form address groups, and good rendering of .html mail, among other things. The latter, however, is also related to what I don't like (below).
Cons
I am not a software programmer, so I cannot understand why Eudora handles .html mail differently than others. What I do know is that due to this difference, .html (only) mail imported to another email program from Eudora is almost unreadable due to the many .html tags found in the messages. Even the new Mozilla version of Eudora (Penelope) cannot handle the .html mail imported from the original Eudora version (last version being 7.01).

"good"
Version: Eudora 7.0.1
Pros
good

"Great - I've used for Eudora for YEARS"
Version: Eudora 7.0.1
Pros
I love that you can have multiple personalities and check all at once, you can filter to go to any mailboxes you create or designate, and more secure than Outlook. It is easy to use and intuitive to understand. No complicated terms or involved steps - set up accounts, download email. I like using the tabs to keep track of signatures and mailboxes. Address book is easy to use.
Cons
No tech support when there is a glitch. I would like to have my attachments more accessible. Not easy to transfer address book information to other programs when needed. Not much uses for stationery.
