Publisher's Description
From Heidi Computers:
Eraser is an advanced security tool for Windows that allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's paper Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory and are selected to effectively remove magnetic remnants from the hard drive.
Other methods include the one defined in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual of the U.S. Department of Defence, and overwriting with pseudorandom data. You can also define your own overwriting methods.

Cons
none to my knowledge
-
"Stick with Version 5 of this software."
Version: Eraser 6.0.8.2273
Pros
Erases files and cleans up slack space.
Cons
Does not integrate as well with the OS as the previous version.
Summary
If you have the previous version, stick with it. Better OS integration.

"Gutman sinon rien!"
Version: Eraser 6.0.8.2273
Pros
Eraser vs Recuva:
Summary
A n'utiliser qu'avec Gutman et a faire tourner pendant la nuit
-
"Erases all files and empty space quickly"
Version: Eraser 6.0.8.2273
Pros
Works well
Multiple options for sweeps
Can salt free space with file fragmentsCons
Progress bar could do with a timer
Activity Icon would be useful, deleting large amounts of space make it look as though it has stalledSummary
It needs to run with Administrative Privileges to allow it to delete all files and free space.
-
"Doesn't work -- "Completed with Errors""
Version: Eraser 6.0.8.2273
Pros
Installs and un-installs quickly and cleanly.
Cons
Doesn't erase free space.
Summary
I've tried unsuccessfully many times to get this software to delete my free space using the Gutmann 35 Pass method, but whether I run it immediately or schedule it for a specific time, it always comes back within a few seconds and reports "Completed with Errors." There is about 250GB of free space on my drive, so I know it's not completing anything, just erroring.

"Auto start can't be disabled easily except by uninstall"
Version: Eraser 6.0.8.2273
Pros
It seems to work ok but its autostart is annoying, almost malware.
Cons
The program starts automatically with your computer. If you try to stop that, using WinPatrol, it starts a never ending cycle of requests by Eraser to start up at next restart.
Summary
Borderline malware.
-
"a comprehensive data erasure solution"
Version: Eraser 6.0.8.2273
Pros
highly customizable
Cons
Some errors that occur are hard to diagnose.
-
"Great remover of problematic files."
Version: Eraser 6.0.8.2273
Pros
Small file that's easily installed and integrates into windows very nicely. I've used this and early versions for years and never had a problem no matter what version of Windows. Useful when a file is damaged by a virus and refuses to be erased.
Cons
On the flip side it doesn't always erase corrupted files though I have used it on malicious ones too with some success.
Summary
Fantastic program to have in your arsenal of tools for maintaining any Windows system to deal with difficult files. Virtually trouble free.
-
"Does what it claims, well and easily"
Version: Eraser 6.0.8.2273
Pros
Seems to work well from what I can judge. Seamlessly meshes with Windows XP. Gives many options for customizing erasing process. Very good documentation.
Cons
None that i've noticed
Summary
Get it; it's free!

"HONEST, CRASHES EVERYTIME AVOID."
Version: Eraser 6.0.8.2273
Pros
Used and older version a few years ago worked fine. But be warned latest version doesn't work.
Cons
Used latest version to erase free space, TOOK AT LEAST 24 HOURS THEN CRASHES EVERYTIME AT THE 75% COMPLETE MARK. (60 gig HD) !! Left me with a giant 40 gig Trash file filling on my hard drive which i had to trace and manually remove myself.
Summary
Not worth the hassle, used to be a good tool but has seriously gone down hill with its latest versions. After 24 hours of supposedly erasing free space, left me with giant trash file clogging my hard drive. then when i ran my file restorer software found that it actually had not erased any of the data on the drive. tried it at least 5-6 times over the last few months, does the same eveytime. What a waste of time.
