Publisher's description of Eraser 5.84
From Heidi Computers:Eraser is an advanced security tool for Windows that allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's paper "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory" and are selected to effectively remove magnetic remnants from the hard drive. Other methods include the one defined in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual of the U.S. Department of Defence, and overwriting with pseudorandom data. You can also define your own overwriting methods.
Version 5.84 is Windows Vista compatible.

Version: Eraser 5.84
"The eraser has come to be one of my best tools that I have found that does work."

Version: Eraser 5.84
"Good erasing, user interface has Vista issues"
Pros: The options are great -- two different sets of wiping options for wiping individual files or "empty" disk space. The wiping itself is fairly quick, even with multiple passes.
Cons: It seems to me that the user interface is not fully tested in Vista. For example, it does not show the erase options in the Explorer context menus, like it is configured to do. The only place the context menu shows the erase options is within the program itself (when viewing "Explorer" mode). It's a shame, because I would like to right-click and immediately erase.
