CNET editors' review

Reviewed by: CNET Staff

EmEditor Professional has the kind of hybridity we find irresistible and oh-so-advantageous in a text-editing program. This versatile editor combines a macro creator worthy of programming pundits with full-fledged, feature-rich text-editing capabilities clothed in a clean, color-coded interface. Developers and power users will love the wealth of languages and syntaxes, including C#, C , Java, PERL, PHP, Python, SQL, and XML. Though the macro creator has been boosted in this version to record PerlScript, PHPScript, Python, and Ruby keystrokes, users who need to record mouse movements should look elsewhere. We appreciate the stackable tabs, the multithreading windows, and the option to apply a 64-bit version (not tested).

Publisher's description

From Emurasoft :

EmEditor Professional, a text editor for Windows, supports JavaScript or VBScript macros, Unicode, plug-ins, syntax highlighting (including embedded scripts in HTML, ASP, and PHP files), drag-and-drop, and menu and keyboard customizations. This release supports not only JavaScript and VBScript for the text editing macros, but also PerlScript, PHPScript, Python, Ruby, and many other ActiveScript languages as long as script engines you want to use are installed on your system. This release also supports a new set of plug-ins including Outlining, Web Preview, and Search Bar. The Outlining plug-in allows you to collapse or expand certain portions of text. External tool standard output can be now redirected into the Output Bar. The text editor is now Windows Vista ready. It supports the User Account Control in Windows Vista, and allows you to run with least privileges environment. A few administrative settings are clearly distinguished. The 64-bit edition is also available. In Version 6.00.1, 8 plug-ins are included in the installer for convenience. Other improvements include minor bug fixes and optimization.

"The only text editor you'll ever need."

by pjdietz on August 16, 2006

Pros: I've been using EmEditor for years, and I highly recommend it. It's very fast and lightweight, but also very powerful and customizable. The context configurations that it ships with are good, but the real power is that you can easily customize these and extend them to fit your needs. Regular expressions support is excellent, both for find-change and for context coloring. Between the robust built-in features and the exstensibility made possible through active scripting, I'm yet to find something I haven't been able to do in EmEditor.

"Editor for html source from Internet Explorer"

by DevPlanner on August 16, 2006

Pros: It's very convenient to view the source code of a web page with a one click from Internet Explorer.

I like its native Windows XP look.

There are few interesting plug-ins, like file view and outline, even possibility to build custom ones. However I'm not sure if someone except developers of this editor will code custom extensions.

Cons: I prefer a code color scheme like in MS Visual Studio, however here it's a bit different by default.

Toolbar is full of practically unused buttons.

I haven't found how to turn on line numbering.
