Earthquake 3D provides a fascinating look at recent seismic activity around the globe. While the program provides a great deal of information and options, it suffers from its complete lack of direction.

We were initially impressed with the interface. The controls all looked basic, but soon we discovered that the Help file didn't do more than give a description of the product, and some actions we wanted to perform were not intuitive enough. The program itself was a spinning globe with magnitudes and the traditional multiring circles indicating earthquakes. We appreciated how the control panel let us filter quakes by severity and changed the globe's look to better see the quakes. This all functioned great, but zooming in was impossible. We learned with ease how to rotate the globe using our mouse, but could not get a closer look, even though it's the first thing the description promised. After several fruitless minutes we grew frustrated and gave up. On a more interesting note, the program did have a feature that updated the globe with the newest quakes. But this wasn't enough to rescue this program from its unfortunate lack of direction.

Earthquake 3D is a freeware program. The program comes as a compressed file. Even though we loved most aspects of this program, its lack of direction makes it hard to recommend.

"Cool program!"

November 13, 2011  |  By galifrean

 |  Version: Earthquake 3D 2.45

Pros

For the money, which is none, this program does a good job. Works without mucking up the rest of the computer.

Cons

Help file is sparse. Link up with Google earth would be excellent.

"Fantastic program"

October 24, 2011  |  By expert99

 |  Version: Earthquake 3D 2.45

Pros

Cool and interactive.

Cons

It would be nicer if the Earth had more detail.

Summary

It's hard to go wrong with a free download that doesn't nag you or make you do stupid things just because it's free. This is a great program that is worth taking a look at if you have any interest in Earthquakes.

"Frozen controls!"

October 21, 2011  |  By Eusebeia7

 |  Version: Earthquake 3D 2.45

Pros

You can visually see all the resent would earthquakes.

Cons

You can see the earthquakes the way that they want you to see them only!

Summary

There are controls for the visualization which used to be adjustable but now the control panel is locked. The controls were easy and reliable so this is completely unnecessary. I think that something is being hidden about the increased frequency and intensity of earthquakes that we are not to see.

Pros

As a visual person, this program is exceptional for getting the scope of earthquake changes to the planet.

Cons

For my type of usage, there are no cons to this program.

Summary

This program really puts planetary earthquakes into perspective.

"Editors View is INACCURATE!"

July 22, 2011  |  By mikethecabinetman

 |  Version: Earthquake 3D 2.45

Pros

The software does offer ZOOM, when you hold both mouse keys down and move the mouse, it allows you to zoom in and out.

The software is very good considering the rating it was given by the staff. The editorial review did not give credit due.

Cons

Nothing to mention here as bad.

Summary

The program is definitely worth the time it takes to download. And has all it said it has.

"It is a good program."

June 04, 2011  |  By PisceanStarman

 |  Version: Earthquake 3D 2.45

Pros

This program can keep you relatively up to date on seismic activity around the world. It keeps track of quakes that have occurred in the previous seven days. The features are fairly good.

Cons

There doesn't seem to be any ability to zoom in on the planet surface to get a better idea of the epicenter or focus of an earthquake without an upgrade. The angle lines can cause some confusion and is a little in the way of overkill.

Summary

It is a good toy to play with if you are not a seismologist or geologist. A journalist may find it useful. Students of geology and seismology will find it to be useful in some of their studies of Earth's activity and volitile nature as they continue their education. More information about an earthquake's coordinates and intensity can be obtained by going / being online and clicking on the USGS button. All in all, I like the program. My geology professor Dr. James Shea (undoubtedly retired by now) at UW-Parkside obtained or developed a computer program that would define the dip and strike of a subteranean fault line by plotting the epicenters and foci of earthquakes in a given area over a period of time. I think that that program would be a useful addition to this program if the time frame were extended to several weeks, or months, instead of just seven days. Possibly, this could be looked into by this program's developers?

"Works great for me"

April 21, 2011  |  By TelecomPhil

 |  Version: Earthquake 3D 2.45

Pros

Works great for me, but

Cons

My colors are not as bright and clear on this PC as they are in the Youtube video from "dutchsinse". Could be this old XP video card or the tube type monitor?

Summary

I can see it and not have to check and wait for info.
Compliments my USGS Earthquake email Notification Service

"Eye-opening view of the world's recent tectonics"

March 30, 2011  |  By plusaf

 |  Version: Earthquake 3D 2.45

Pros

easy to install, run and view. colorful graphics and slide-bars to select magnitudes, time spans and other options work quite well.

3-d globe view is very intuitive

Cons

.suggest that all check-boxes [such as "islands"] be auto-saved when it's closed.
.it's not VERY intuitive about how to rotate or incline the view, and a button for "stop" or "hold" would be great, too!
.multiple events are hard to tell apart

Summary

a great addition to my desktop, given the amazing amount of seismic activity after the Big One off the Japanese coast. provides an amazingly quick and easy view of activity for the past week, and would be a great science aid in schools!

"Excellent perspective of earthquake locations"

March 14, 2011  |  By pauljschroeder

 |  Version: Earthquake 3D 2.45

Pros

You have a lot of control over how to view the locations. You can stop the Earth's rotation, zoom in, tilt, and control the options of what you want to see You can filter out weaker earthquakes and when they took place as close as current events.

Cons

It may not not be as clear as Google Earth but it gives you enough detail to give you a very good idea of the location.

Summary

I would highly recommend it because it will keep you updated on all of major events taking place.
