Behind a slick interface, this program backs up all your PC's drivers in case you mess up something fierce. From registration to implementation, DriverMax works fast, runs smooth, and does even more than mere backing up.
When you run the app, it asks you if you'd like to run the trial version or apply for a registration key. The key is free, though, requiring only an e-mail address and your name. Once you've entered the key, the program interface appears, with slick button navigation: Driver Operations, Updates and Identification, and Popular Hardware. Mousing over one reveals more choices, so you can export your drivers, import drivers, or view an installed drivers report.
Updates lets you update both the DriverMax software and the drivers themselves, although as of this writing there is a warning label on the DriverMax Web site that downloads are not currently functioning. The program can also identify unknown hardware and point you in the direction of popular hardware options, pointing users to a compilation of statistics about different video cards and processors.
The strongest features, though, relate to driver backup and reinstalls. They function smoothly, offering users the option to back up all drivers or compile a customized list. Reinstalling an "accidentally" deleted driver was as pain-free as could be. As of the version 4.4 update, the DriverMax Agent, which automatically scans for driver updates, works in Windows XP and Windows Vista 32-bit, but not 64-bit. This is a great utility tool that should appeal to newbies, advanced hackers, and everybody in between.
Publisher's description
From Innovative Solutions :DriverMax is a powerful free utility which helps you download, back up and restore the drivers installed on your Windows Vista or Windows XP computer and check if newer versions are available. Download all drivers from one place in just a few steps. Or back them up so you will have all of them in a single place and will be able to reinstall them in a few minutes. This tool can save you a lot of time when reinstalling Windows, especially on older computers for which the original CDs containing the drivers have been lost. You no longer have to track down old driver installation CDs, insert one installation CD after another or spend hours searching for drivers on the Internet. DriverMax is also able to display a detailed report about all drivers (versions, release dates) installed on your system. Identify unknown devices in your computer and get Windows Vista rating information before you purchase new hardware.
Version 5.2 adds driver rollback and restore point functions, improved the Drivermax Agent, increased download speed and Windows 7 compatibility.

Version: DriverMax 5.2
"Does what it is designed to do in free version."
Pros: DriverMax5.2 will scan computer and tell you if your drivers need updating or not, and will obtain the needed drivers for you to apply the updates.
Cons: Free version only allows two updates per day,and application of them can be confusing, and they do not always apply as intended. Drivers may also be applied for wrong OS.
Summary: I would have to say that I am straddling the fence on DriverMax. I like it because it checks my hardware's drivers and lets me know what their status is. I dislike the program because, after a bad update of my sound card drivers and having to do a r... read more >>

Version: DriverMax 5.2
Pros: This is one fast driver finder. In fact it gives you a bunch of drivers.
Cons: Caution - some drivers are not digitally signed meaning they might not work on your system. Back up first !
Free = one driver at a time with a wait period.Summary: Give it a try for the ten dollar and by-pass the waiting and one at time hassle.

Version: DriverMax 5.2
"Sometimes fails to download and install frivers"
Pros: It actually seems to be able to identify a system's drivers and point to upgrades.
Cons: Sometimes the process of downloading and installing some drivers has to be repeated, at times more than once.
Summary: Like someone has already said, it works as advertised, albeit not perfectly.

Version: DriverMax 5.2
Pros: It checks my entire system for driver status.
Cons: It will only download and update 2 items per day.
Summary: While it works and is free, the limitation of 2 updates per day makes it a long process to update the system the first time.

Version: DriverMax 5.2
Pros: None whatsoever
Cons: Limits (free) driver downloads to 2 per day. Then a message "pausing will retry in 60 minutes" Obvious attempt upon the company to bait and switch. Make download frustrating to make customer pay for "PRO" version. Shameful CNET!
Summary: Cnet should pursue every fraudulent program provider posting on their website. CNET is losing credibility quickly. Why not an option for "0" stars?
