From Runtime Software :DriveImage XML is an easy to use and reliable program for imaging and backing up partitions and logical drives. The program allows you to backup logical drives and partitions to image files, browse these images, view and extract files, restore these images to the same or a different drive, copy directly from drive to drive. Image creation uses Microsoft's Volume Shadow Services (VSS), allowing you to create safe "hot images" even from drives currently in use. Images are stored in XML files, allowing you to process them with 3rd party tools, so you'll never again be stuck with a useless backup. Restore images to drives without having to reboot. DriveImage XML also runs from a WinPE boot CD-ROM.

"Does what it claims very well"
Pros: Reliable backups of partitions, including the Windows one. Can browse backups and restore individual files. Despite claim that it is for Windows XP, it works equally well in Vista.Can be loaded from a BartPE boot disk to restore a crashed system
Cons: The program has no downsides.

Pros: Simple, free and works well. I have used it successfully for several restores.
Cons: Would not create an image of a partition unless assigned a drive letter. Maybe that's typically of other imaging software????

"Does everything it should, without hassle"
Pros: Does a simple no-frills backup of data partitions and boot partitions.
Restoring single files or entire hard drive partitions is also simple, tho restoring a bootable partition takes a little prep (make partition, make it bootable, make it active).Cons: Documentation about bootable partitions is weak, tho it CAN be done: make partition (any size & formatted to FAT 32, NTFS, etc.) bootable, then make partition ACTIVE using WIndows' Admin Tools, THEN run DiX to restore or copy a boot partition.
