Editors' review

PDF files are indispensable in business, but it's a rare PC user who doesn't encounter the Adobe file format at some point, and PDFs will certainly become more common, not less. Developers offer a dizzying array of PDF tools, often bundled together for greater value. One such bundle is Docudesk's PDF Essentials Plus, which combines the company's deskPDF Professional PDF authoring tool with deskUNPDF Professional, its PDF conversion utility. The combination allows you to create feature-rich PDFs that are fully compatible with Adobe and other PDF applications, as well as convert PDFs to various formats, including Word and Excel documents, HTML, and image files.

This program integrates two similar tools in one interface, but deskUNPDF's interface is the primary application, whereas deskPDF installs as a printer driver accessed from your print menu. This helps keep things simple and straightforward and enables the program's unique capability to print documents in 15 different output formats instead of just as PDFs. The interface itself is a clean, up-to-date design with black and gray tones and Vista-style highlights for a businesslike look that doesn't resemble an appliance repair manual. The program offers some other unique features, such as Accu-Text, which claims highly accurate content extraction. We can't say offhand if it extracts more data than its competitors, only that we had no complaints whatsoever with the quality of the PDFs it produces, or the converted files, for that matter. We were surprised to see it even fully supports the open-source OpenOffice format, something we applaud since it makes this tool that much more capable and compatible.

We've tested a lot of PDF utilities, and most do a pretty good job at their highly focused tasks. The difference comes down to value, flexibility, and ease of use. On each of those measures, PDF Essentials Plus hits the mark.

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of Docudesk PDF Essentials Plus 3.0.1.1. The trial version is limited to 30 days only.

    "Very happy with this download"

    March 27, 2014   |   By lester_matthew

    Version: DeskPDF Studio X 5.0

    Pros

I just needed a program to turn some of my papers pdf files. I was a user of Advanced Scan to PDF Free for a few weeks.

Definitely worth the download, it does everything imaginable from scanning papers to sending PDFs. I scanned a lot of documents to PDF with very little efforts.

    Cons

    So far everything works fine

    Summary

Advanced Scan to PDF Free does everything I need. I'm happy with the program and the online guidance.

    "Absolute dealbreaker"

    March 03, 2014   |   By dsidler88

    Version: DeskPDF Studio X 5.0

    Pros

    It works as advertised. Except...

    Cons

The trial version creates a watermark at the bottom of the PDF. This does not appear when you open the PDF in this software, but it will for any other PDF viewer. There is no warning or indication that this software will leave a watermark on the document.

    Summary

I was definitely going to upgrade to the full version of this software. But i think it was very misleading, abhorrent business practice for them to surprise me with this, I only found out because a potential employer used Adobe to view my resume... My f#^$%*@ RESUME. So thanks, DeskPDF. You potentially ruined my chances at several jobs today. Try to keep your customers in mind next time. Do you really need a time trial, AND a watermark?

    "Very happy with this purchase"

    February 11, 2014   |   By ftricamo

    Version: DeskPDF Studio X 5.0

    Pros

I just needed a program to write and edit pdf files.I was a user of deskPDF Professional for a few years. Decided to upgrade to Studio X after my purchase of a new computer with Office 365.

Definitely worth the upgrade, Studio X does everything imaginable from extracting from pdf's, editing pdf's (matching fonts seamlessly) to converting pdf's to Word, Excel, JPEG's, TIFF's and PNG's.

I convert a lot of documents to Word and have to touch up the layout far less than i would have expected. Very little maintenance.

When I edit a pdf directly, i am amazed that it auto matches the font so well.

Setting security features of my documents is fast and easy.

Since it is my default viewer, I always have Studio open with a variety of docs open and i find myself editing directly. Something I could never do with 2.5

    Cons

As for figuring out how to use all the features, definitely play with it to figure it out. The Help is very basic.

    Summary

I had an issue where it would not covert pdf to Word. I played with it for a few days, searched the FAQ's and finally submitted a ticket. I had a response within hours suggesting I uninstall it, reboot, reinstalled, rebooted and it worked from then on. I think it was more of a Windows operating system process than a Software issue.

Studio X is as robust as it claims to be. It does everything I need need and more.

I am happy with the program and the Customer Service.

"One of the worst pieces of software I have every used"

    January 26, 2014   |   By The_Ranter

    Version: DeskPDF Studio X 5.0

    Pros

There are no pros to this software. Do not waste your time or money

    Cons

Nothing but cons. Too many to even mention. Incredibly slow. If attempting to pan and zoom make sure you have a coffee pass the time. Does not translate documents properly. Does not print properly. Often prints blank pages. Continually gets out of memory error even with 64gig of RAM on my system. Have attempted to contact customer support several times with no response other than an automated email saying they will be in contact but they have never addressed any of my isses.

    Summary

One of the worst software I have ever used. I would avoid this software at all costs. I have to seriously question all of the positive reviews I have seen as they are completely unsubstantiated by any function of the software. If you don't believe me make sure to download the demo before purchasing. I made the mistake of purchasing the software based on reviews and I paid for it.

    "Terrible product!"

    January 12, 2014   |   By lmkelley

    Version: DeskPDF Studio X 5.0

    Pros

I have nothing whatsoever positive to say about this program.

    Cons

This has got to be one of the very worst pieces of software I have ever downloaded. During installation and without my permission or knowledge it set itself as my default printer making my actual HP printer nonfunctional. I am now reinstalling the whole driver for the HP. It also took over inserted itself into Word in a way that upon opening Word I got a security alert that it was compromising that program. I did not check anything in installation that would have set this desk-pdf up in or to work with Word. I hope I have now removed all of it. Unless you want a compromised system or a couple of hours of removal work do not download this program.

I have never written a negative review like this about any program before but I don't want anyone else to have to go through what I just went through.

    "Nice idea, poorly written"

    October 23, 2013   |   By dgol09

    Version: DeskPDF Studio X 5.0

    Pros

    Lots of features

    Cons

    Lots of bugs

    Summary

I have own the full version of this program and some lesser versions for a year or so. It is full of bugs and I often have to work very hard just to get basic features to work. I have contacted to company and they always respond that they are sorry and they will look in to it and that is the end of their answer. DO NOT BUY IT. BTW I am expert with computers, so it not that I just don't understand how to use the program.
