The creators of the popular DivX video format also make this freeware bundle for playing and encoding DivX files. Video and audio playback is fairly smooth, and you can shift among full-screen, compact, and console modes using the right-click context menu. Skins are available on the publisher's site.
The installation offers a six-month trial of the Pro version of the encoder. The help file is external, on a live Web site, and not very helpful for answering basic questions such as what formats you can play and where to install skins. The codec's user guide is a separate download.
The program eats nearly 20MB even when there's no video playing. But, if you simply need to view DivX files or convert other files to the DivX format, this bundle is an adequate option.
Publisher's description

Version: DivX for Windows with DivX Player 6.4
"Iwas intrested in the Converter"
Pros: Dont know if any.
Cons: It is not at all optimised for Dual Cores, no matter what they say. Compression takes AGES! If it could use both the Cores efficiently, it could encode in half the time! I dont know why such a big company can not make better and faster Encoders. It does not show information on what its doing.

Version: DivX for Windows with DivX Player 6.4
Pros: This software does work well while it's free. Too bad someone had to try and make a profit.
Cons: That Download.com and Windows advertise it as free.

Version: DivX for Windows with DivX Player 6.4
Pros: Good for converting files below size 50 mb
Cons: When it comes to compress files which are over 1 gb, the divx player takes about 1.5 hours to compress/convert into divx format (the compression is very low and slow).
Moreover, audio video synchronisation differs about 5-10 seconds.

Version: DivX for Windows with DivX Player 6.4
Pros: Looks great, really simple to use, but...
Cons: This review applies to the DivX Converter part of the bundle ONLY.
I used DivX Converter to compress mpg files created by Hauppauge DVB-T software with a Nexus satellite TV card. The mpgs have always been of very high quality with only occasional - less than 1% - glitching (mosaics). They play smoothly in VLC and WMP. I wanted to make space on my hard drive. Now I wish I had bought a bigger drive instead.
The reasons are simple:
1. DivX Converter takes ages to compress a file;
2. It often freezes, crashes and even suddenly quits without trace, but worst of all,
3. The resulting DivX file is often so poorly synched that the file is useless (20 second delay between audio and video). To quote their website, "The MPEG-2 decoder that the DivX Converter uses will drop frames if they are detected as corrupted. This may lead to audio/video sync issues." Detected as corrupt!!
If you are tempted to use this software, first check out DivX Converter Known Issues on the support section of the DivX website and see if you agree with me that this is buggy beta software.
