CNET Editors' review
With the advent of high-definition video, many people are finding that programs like Windows Media Player just aren't going to cut it for viewing HD content. HD video demands a player that can do it justice, and DivX Plus 8 for Windows is perfectly suited to handle this task.
DivX Plus 8 is a whole suite of utilities, including a desktop player, a converter, a Web player, and the necessary codec pack to handle the content. We put each of the applications through its paces and found them all to be intuitive and well designed. The player is specially designed to maximize the appearance and audio of high-definition video, and we could certainly see the difference in a head-to-head with the same clip played in Windows Media Player. The latest version also makes it easy to transfer content to DiVX certified DVD players or Blu-ray players (or the PS3). If you're looking to optimize videos for the platform on which they will be played, the DivX converter will come in handy. It's impressive how simple it is to use.
The DivX codec comes in handy if you want to view HD videos with other media players, such as Windows Media Player, while the Web player is exactly what it sounds like: an online plug-in that lets you stream HD videos. If any of this sounds confusing, that's because DivX 8 Plus isn't really made for users who aren't at least a bit familiar with the ins and outs of HD video. However, those who are will find this group of tools to be quite helpful. The program has no built-in Help file, but its online support page provides a comprehensive set of FAQs, tutorials, and how-to guides.
It's worth noting that the DivX 8 Plus player takes up a fair amount of processing power, though presumably you won't be using your system for much else while using it, and also that the program installs desktop icons without asking. The overall suite is free, but if there is an option to DivX Pro pack to unlock some features, such as the capability to transcode files for mobile device playback. We recommend this program to all users.

-
"ONLY PARTIALLY USEFUL.GOOD ONLY FOR THE CODEC IT OFFERS"
Version: DivX Plus Software 8
Pros
you need the video codec to make your system complete in all respects in matters of media playing.
Cons
the player, converter is waste of time as there are better free options galore.the video player destabilised my system with video files too forever to load.the converter isnt critically acclaimed either.
Summary
only the codec part is worth installing for your technically sound pc complete with all plugins.rest components are best avoided.

"Suddenly I have DivX. Suddenly I have problems."
Version: DivX Plus Software 8
Pros
none observed
Cons
Seems to have installed itself.
"Upgrade" pop-up and webpage is confusing.Summary
Yesterday, Real Player announced it was having a "rare" technical difficulty, and subsequently my CD/DVD drive disappeared from My Computer until I rebooted. A different audio CD (this one commercial) played better, but still I got lots of similar pop-ups reporting some problem. (These I dismissed without losing the drive altogether.)
BTW, I'm using XP Pro SP3, and the drive is a HP DVD1270.
I've read that a disappearing optical drive is sometimes related to having installed new software. I had installed none, but on that first reboot, Windows did indicate that it wanted to shut down in order to install an update. I presumed it meant Windows update, not third-party software, so I allowed (although it was odd that I hadn't gotten the usual MS update download request). This morning, I find what turns out to be a DivX update icon in my system tray! So maybe I did unknowingly install new software? I'm not technically knowledgeable enough to say if DivX is what's disabling my drive, but it's the #1 suspect. Never even heard of it before this. DivX, if it turns out to be the case, where do I send the bill for my time?

"Waste of time"
Version: DivX Plus Software 8
Pros
Creates mkv files with multiple audio tracks.
Cons
Changed the default programs settings without even asking for it.
The free version is limited to generating mkv files at 720p maximum resolution.
Created the mkv file with an audio format that even the DivX player doesn't support, requiring an additional codec.
Doesn't support subtitles.
The Player is marked as an harmfull application by the anti-virus software is manby times crashes.
I'm using Windows 7.Summary
This software is a waste of time.
Update: Just noticed that this thing messed up my other programs, like the one I had to display subtitles (VoSub) and the AC3 codec I had installed. Had to completly remove DivX (I had kept the codecs) and reinstall my programs.

"What the ????..."
Version: DivX Plus Software 8
Pros
Can't tell... the downloaded software was in Spanish!
Cons
Well the main con is... well, that it's written in Spanish!
Summary
I'm sure that it's possible this program could quite possibly be a perfectly decent piece of software. Unfortunately, it's just as useful to me as if it were written in Greek or Latin! In other words... It isn't! (The webmaster might want to check which versions of the software are at the various download sites. Just FYI... )

"What a Piece of @#$% should be zero stars"
Version: DivX Plus Software 8
Pros
when it works does an awesome job converting file and compressing video size while keeping clarity
As a video player does blu-ray videos and other high-def files justice
Also pumps out audio in play-back modeCons
doesn't work more often then does
glacier-like slow, converted a 2.1Gb file in 27 hours
a RAM eating monster not allowing you to do anything else while its runningSummary
I downloaded free version and was impressed by job it did on first 2 files. Third try, I loaded 4 videos, first 2 files it completed but then froze-up harder than Antartica, had to re-start my computer but 2 completed files were inaccessable as they were still .tmp files. After that, stuck with single file attempts and a few more hits and misses. Then I foolishly bought the pro version hoping it would be more reliable -- NOPE, just more options
I have an 8Gb desktop and this program would eat up all 8Gb and then seem to yell for more! Plus when running no other programs, and I mean nothing, else can be running, as those reliable programs - like a desktop clock get squirrely. Norton Security crashed once while this program was running, huh?!
After buying Pro version, I talked to tech-support about how after loading file, program goes into Analysing mode and either is ready quickly or ends up in an infinite feed-back loop. When this happens, I'd close program but then program will not re-open. Tech support said I need to re-start my computer. My response was "What?!" and "Are you kidding me?" This is 2011 and we stopped doing that with Nintendo in 1994! re-start my computer everytime this program gets into an endless feed-back loop?! which seemed to happen the more i tried to use it
The final straw was when after 36 hours and at 96% complete, program accounced it could not complete task. Upon clicking on OK, whole system crashed...that's it I'm done!!!
Currently am trying to get my money back, wish me luck with that
Thankfully Revo pulled out all its tenticles (and there were many) when I uninstalled it
DON'T DOWNLOAD!!!
