Disk Drill for Mac is a useful utility that creates a recovery disk volume with copies of your important files. If you delete a file by accident, you can then recover it from that vault. If the file is recently deleted, you can probably even recover it from the original volume. In addition, Disk Drill for Mac also monitors the state of your hard drive and notifies you of potential failures or capacity limitations. Disk Drill for Mac is a slimmed-down version available for free, with the Pro edition available for $89.99. With the free version, disk scanning and monitoring is supported, but there's limited recovery capability unless you upgrade.
When installing, Disk Drill for Mac asks whether you want to protect your files by creating a recovery vault and lets you select the devices to be backed up and where the recovery vault is located. After that, there's an advertisement to upgrade to the higher-end Pro version. If you stay with the free version, the interface is straightforward and allows you to specify which disks should be backed up to the vault. To recover a file, you delve into the vault and select the file from the list, and it is then copied back from the vault with original attributes preserved. A nice touch is that you can password protect the vault to protect others from snooping through your vault files. Disk Drill for Mac can also recover files from the hard drive, even after emptying the Trash, as long as the sectors are still intact (a nice feature that will be worth the installation in a panic situation).
Disk Drill for Mac works as advertised, but there are also other available solutions to creating backups . We use Time Machine regularly, as well as create DMG files at intervals, so Disk Drill for Mac is more for those who do not perform backups if at all, and want a security blanket against accidental deletions. At the price of the full version, though, we would prefer other methods. The free Disk Drill for Mac edition is worth trying if you think this kind of protection will suit you.

I tried free version of Disk Drill first, it found the file, so I bought full version. It recovered the file!!!
I was very happy, 'cause literally it saved my a** )))))) It is worthy of what it costs -

1.)You can test the software. If it works, you can sign up for a code and continue without the need to restart the scan; this could be a 44 hour scan (as in my case) Some other companies require a shutdown of the program to upgrade! This was a big turn off for me.
2.) This software worked perfectly when I accidentally formatted my backup hard drive. The most impressive thing was that it recovered .mus files (music notation) and other specialty files that many programs can't recover. They have a full list of files that can be recovered.
3.) There is life at customer service!
4.) Scans can be started and stopped at any point. The program can even be shut down and restarted without losing what had already been scanned. This is a great feature when you want to "unplug" and do some stuff on your computer part way through a perhaps very long recovery scan!
5.) software has a feature to make sure no data is ever lost in the future.Cons
I have found no cons as of yet. On a deep scan you won't usually get the name of the file back but this is common with all data recover programs so not "really" a con.........Just make sure you read about what this software is intended for before you decide to buy it. For me it was all about my accidental format of my backup drive.
Summary
For my use this software gets 5 stars. It saved ALL of my critical data after my unfortunate accidental format of a drive. I also tried trashing some files and emptied the trash bin. In this case I got back the file even with the name of the file.

Disk Drill Pro can recover all major file types. It can also search for lost partitions, create disk images and monitor disk status.
The technical support staff was knowledgeable and provided a clear and concise answer to my question.Cons
A few audio files were corrupted and I could not retrieve them. However, this is the case with any recovery software.
