Version: Directory Opus 8.2.2
"This is a top shelf file manager/windows explorer replacement!"
Pros: As someone who has tried many other software products in this genre over the years I can safely say that Directory Opus 8.2.1.0 is the best I've seen.
1. It is so feature rich that the makers (GPSoftware) wrote a well illustrated 211 page PDF help file to aid you in understanding all that Directory Opus can do.
2.There are also tutorials and forums available to help users.
3. Not only is this program a top notch file manager/Windows Explorer replacement but D Opus also has a built in file/folder sychronization, an FTP tool, an advanced file finding tool, archival tools (zip., rar.), and a viewer that supports a number of popular image formats.
4. On top of all that this software has to offer is the fact that it can be customized to the nth degree. I have never seen any program anywhere that you can tweak to your liking the way you can with this one. It's incredible all the options you are given! While the sheer number of options can be intimidating to a newbie most are easy to set up and use. The more experience computer users will think that Christmas came early when they see all the ways D Opus can be customized. It's mind boggling!
5. I have it set up to load when the OS (Windows XP) loads, so when I tap on the icon in the task bar it instantly comes up....no waiting.
6. Another nice feature is that each icon on the toolbar(s) can be programed to have up to three different functions (left, right, and middle click with the mouse). While there are file manager/Windows Explorer replacement programs that have a small feature or two that D Opus lacks, no program I have seen has a better overall feature set or the ability to customize the way you can this software. Simply put, Directory Opus 8.2.1.0 is one well thought out and polished piece of software.....very professional!
Cons: 1. Directory Opus cost around $65. Many will instantly be turned off to the price, but, in this case, you DO get what you pay for!
2. It would be nice to see GPSoftware add more archival tools.

Version: Directory Opus 8.2.2
"Awesome - fast & feature packed"
Pros: FAST - designed for speed and multi-threaded (even better if you have a dual-core CPU), very configurable, built-in FTP, much more.
Cons: Nothing worth mentioning.

Version: Directory Opus 8.2.2
"OK, BUT DOESN'T GO FAR ENOUGH"
Pros: An improvement on explorer , though I found it not enough of an improvement to warrant the price.
Some useful features but seems to be fairly slow in some functions.
Cons: I have a major problem with Explorer that crashes without warning , then restarts.
I have tried all the others and the fact that explorer still runs to manage the desktop seems to be the cause. Aston complete shell replacement works brilliantly and looks good but is pretty fussy in the Desktop area .It does provide some very innovative features but tends to produce a desktop area that has trouble fitting in the short cuts that I want.
If it could mimic the simple Explorer Desktop style it would be worth any money!

Version: Directory Opus 8.2.2
Pros: There's much more than there is space here to list. This is the most customizable, feature-rich, and flexible application I have ever seen. It is a model of computer efficiency and form-following-function. Anyone who ever used an Amiga, will remember and appreciate this software.
The rich feature list will satisfy even the most power-hungry users. You can configure practically everything about Opus: status bar information, background images, colors, tool bars, menus, and a lot more. You can specify different display formats for: individual folders; folders containing a certain content type, Folders on different types of drives. You can export your entire configuration for backup or transfer to another PC.
You can add descriptions to files. It contains many utilities: Synchronize, Duplicate File Finder, Find. It can display entire folder trees in Flat View. It can launch external applications to operate on files selected within it. It can be expanded through plug-ins. It includes built-in: FTP, Zip and Rar handling, image viewing. If you manage lots of music, video, or image files, this tool is a must have!
Cons: Some may say Opus is too expensive.
Most users are only familiar with Windows Explorer, which is free because does does next-to-nothing. Directory Opus costs money--because it does next-to-everything. It is constantly being developed. GPSoftware often releases free updates between major releases, many times with added functionality. They provide a 60-day free trial with absolutely no limits. You even get technical support during that time! They also provide discount licensing for multiple PCs.
Some may say Opus is too complicated.
Most users are only familiar with Windows Explorer, which is simple because it does does next-to-nothing. Directory Opus takes more time to learn--because it does next-to-everything, and does it much better than Windows Explorer.
The manual is about 250 pages long. There is also very good User Support Forum with several helpful power users. The developers themselves often participate. It WILL take time to familiarize yourself with this software. Reading the manual is REQUIRED because you have never used anything this comprehensive or powerful before. Once, you get past the learning curve and customize Opus to your preferences, getting around your PC becomes faster, more efficient, and a lot less aggravating. It WILL save you time and money in the long run.

Version: Directory Opus 8.2.2
"The only Explorer replacement that really works"
Pros: Directory Opus (silly name, great product) is the only Explorer replacement I have tried that actually replaces all the functions of Explorer and then some. Extremely customisable, fast, and best of all NOT Microsoft!
Cons: Not much - you lose the 'View in Groups' view in folders, the default icons are really dated (but you can change them all), it can crash due to file path errors, but not badly - and you still have Explorer running in the background.
