    "Not CAN-SPAM compliant"

    March 10, 2010  |   By thedude456

    Version: Direct Mail 2.2.2

    Pros

Easy to use. Offer email delivery service for $0.01/email.

    Cons

Unsubscribe feature does not function leaving you liable for up to $16,000 per email sent.

    Summary

If you plan to use this software in compliance with the CAN SPAM act, don't bother. Recipients who unsubscribe to a email list are NOT automatically excluded from future mailings. They continue to receive emails.

I ran a test by emailing personal accounts and then using the unsubscribe link and hosted webpage the service provides. The software recorded these links. However, for some reason, it did not prevent future mailings to the email address. Tech support offered no help.

Per CAN SPAM, will leave you liable for up to $16,000 per email.

Features might be nice, but it always crashes and loses your data after a couple uses. We've lost our entire blacklist this way multiple times, nearly putting us out of business. Stay far away from this dangerous software.

"Bugginess and poor customer service make it a no-go"

    July 18, 2008  |   By altlasslipped

    Version: Direct Mail 2.1.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I really want to love this software, as it seems to be a great answer for those with needs to complex for the likes of ConstantContact.

    First, the Good:

List management is great and fairly seamless. It's a bit scary that your auto-management only syncs when your computer is online, but it's not a big deal. Works well.

The eThree mailing service is generally very good during the free trial, but after that, it's a bit pricey. May be worth it given lightning speed and good deliverability.

The ablity to turn a webpage into an email by just dropping in the link is brilliant. I've seen other implementations of this that continually failed or didn't get it quite right. In this one, what you see in Safari is *exactly* what you get.

    The Bad:

Don't use this if email is time-sensitive or mission-critical for your business. Once, eThree mailing service was down without notice. And the response was a pretty weak "oops." Cold comfort when you have a weekly email newsletter with revenue attached.

And the program is buggy. After a couple updates, we got an error warning every time we booted up, but without apparent problems. Always clicked to send info to publisher.

But in two different cases, about a month apart, after taking an upgrade, the program would endlessly cycle and crash on boot. And guess what -- That means you can't even get your data out.

Customer service always has the same pattern: Quick response asking for the logfile followed by radio silence of 24-48 hours. Meanwhile, you're stuck.

On the most recent, we were enterprising enough to dig through Time Machine for an old version which we finally got working.

A shame. It's a program with great potential, but its flakiness makes it a no-go.

    Version: Direct Mail 1.8.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using this product for a few months now and at first thought it was very good. After two recent mail out where a pdf attachment was not able to be opened by about half of the recipients (350 recipients all up) and it wasn't just a mac/windows problem, I have to conclude that the program is corrupting the file in the sending of it! I have resent the file to some people (exactly the same file) just by usual email without any trouble. So what does this program do to the files? No idea, but I am NOT upgrading (the cost of the upgrade is ridiculous) and will stop using it.

    Shame, as it had potential.

    "Fantastic Upgrade"

    Summary

This is a great and feature packed upgrade to slickest and easiest app of its type for Mac. I'm very impressed, and it's been amazingly easy to send out several trial mailings over the past few days. Seems very stable, and the new features are well worth the upgrade price.

If want to be sc*** like me, with 29,99USD upgrade after 10 days of purchasing version 1, then please give them your money. If you don't want to be treated like a looser, than just find another app. The app does what it is supposed to do, but the developer is simply cheating on us. Another example of no respect for customers.

    Version: Direct Mail 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I tried this product and it seemed promising, needed some more advanced features but it worked. After committing to it and importing all my contacts, then optimizing the contacts - about a days work . I closed and saved the program, next time I open it the program says there was a problem and all my information is lost. I say no problem I have time machine I restore but no luck. There are no support or preference files for this program, were is this data kept? The program has had no updates for about a year and there is no help section on the website. It seems the developer has no interest and is sitting back collecting money. Beware if you try it do not on leopard!

    "Bust!"

    January 1, 2007  |   By rizd81

    Version: Direct Mail 1.8

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I purchased the full version to send an important email to 300 contacts stored in Address book. I ran a few tests emailing myself to make sure it would go through. The email was text only.

I then sent it to my mailing list using the SMTP and Direct method, and thought I was all set.
    Nope.
The email landed in the junk box of the receipients, even though they previously received emails from my address. 12 replied to tell me of the error, but who knows how many never even looked through their junk mail. I then ran a test with a friend, sending via SMTP only, then Direct only, then both options. Each time I sent it through Direct Mail it went to the recipients junk mail box. I sent the same email normally through Apple Mail and it went to his inbox. Direct Mail was causing the email to go the junk box.

Contacted the developer, with no response.
    You've been warned.

    "great product, weak support"

    September 6, 2006  |   By wulf

    Version: Direct Mail 1.7.7

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I am now at version 1.7.8 and although I can HIGHLY recommend Direct Mail for Mac OSX (more than excellent value for money) I am EXTREMELY dissatisfied with the lack of and/or delayed support, even if this is a sign of success and heavy workload.

Direct Mail is very intuitive, does the job as intended, and offers most of the options I expect from a direct mail engine.
We are based in France and cover the world: the spelling tools in several languages are brilliant.

Several issues remain unsolved, mostly related with attachment and also with loosing formatting and hyperlinks when importing or pasting a Word for Mac or image (logo) file into "message".

I am now avoiding attaching the document in question since many target email addresses filter and refuse incoming mail with attachments.

The only remaining option is to include everything in the body of the e-mail message. That's where the formatting issues remain.

The online help files do NOT cvoer nor answer my questions.

If there would have been a better product, I would already have switched only because of the time I am wasting trying to figure things out myself, mostly in vain since the program seems to be lacking these features.

If only Jonathan and friends could make an effort and REPLY. I hate radio silence and need to move on!

    Herman
