With so many ways to network and socialize online, you may find it difficult to keep track of everything. Digsby promises to help keep chat, e-mail, and social networking conversations in one convenient place, but it didn't work exactly as we expected.
This freeware program looks a great deal like other popular chat programs, such as AIM. With a skinny rectangular box running along the side of your computer, you can simply click the prompt to add accounts to get started. From here you will find a menu of seven different IM programs to choose from, six different e-mail programs, and four different social networking sites. When selected, each simply asks for your log-in and password and connects to the system. Your various programs are displayed, with IM buddy icons separate from e-mail and social networking e-mails.
Users simply click on the name of the person they want to chat with and they can use Digsby exactly as they would any chat program. However, if the user wants to check e-mails, they will be taken to their Web browser and directly to their e-mail service. If you could write and check e-mails directly from Digsby, we'd be much happier with this download. That being said, if you have a lot of IM accounts to keep in one place, this freeware tool can help keep you organized.
Unfortunately, Digsby users need to be aware of two problems with the installation. One is that you must opt-out of several engine overrides and be on the lookout for other opt-out advertisements. Buried in its EULA is the announcement that Digsby will commandeer your CPU cycles when your computer is idle for "research" purposes. The only way to deactivate it is to support the program under Help/Support Digsby. Some of these options are free, but this type of user coercion is not appropriate.
Publisher's description
From dotSyntax :Digsby helps you manage all your IM, e-mail, and social network accounts from one easy-to-use application. Digsby lets you chat with all your friends on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, Facebook Chat, and Jabber with one simple to manage buddy list. It provides notifications when new e-mails arrive and lets you perform actions such as "Mark as Read" or "Report Spam" without having to go to your inbox while also keeping you up-to-date on what's happening on your social networks with pop-up notifications and a news feed of recent events for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and MySpace.
Build 61 added a global status update, expanded support for the MySpace feed, real-time Web search, and a new Windows 7 skin option. Build 62 now notifies you about the research module the first time it turns on and provides info about how it works along with how to turn it off.

Version: Digsby build 62 (beta)
Pros: Every chat program works except for Yahoo.
But I can't get Yahoo chat to work anywhere, not even the chat program itself!
Yahoo works on my wife's pc but no go on mine.Cons: I tried this program so I might could find another way to use Yahoo without having to us its chat program.
But, even this program rejects my authentication! -

Version: Digsby build 62 (beta)
"Best Multi-Protocol Client for most users if not for..."
Pros: *Links nearly all of the major IM protocols.
*The option to have more than one log in on the same network and consolidation of contacts on different clients.
*Connects to Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn feeds.
*Links to POP. IMAP and Webmail.Cons: You must be VERY careful when installing to avoid being stuck with spyware/toolbars or auto opted-in to "idle bandwidth research" as a means they use for funding. Unfortunate that they resulted to this as I think most would rather pay a nominal fee.
Summary: If you carefully read and opt out as you install Digsby can be the best multi-protocol client out there - simply because it is so clean, simple and yet utilitarian as being far more than just for chat. It can use quite a bit of memory but it is doi... read more >>

"Absolutely the best chat program available"
Pros: Connects to lots of messaging protocols and social networks, with the ability to have multiple accounts on the same protocol.
Customizable appearance
Tabbed interface for chatsCons: Doesn't make me a sandwich on command? No problems here
Summary: USE THIS PROGRAM. I tried out essentially every multi-protocol IM program with a decent rating on cnet, and this is the best by a very large amount. It's simple, fast, flexible, and good looking. If you're just using MSN, I'd recommend Windows Li... read more >>

"A Rotten Fish in a Pretty Wrapper!"
Pros: Setting aside that you cannot do email from the program itself; the ability to keep all your accounts and emails together is very convenient and resource savvy. It is very nice to be able to see/chat with all my contact without running 3+ clients.
Cons: "Buried in its EULA is the announcement that Digsby will commandeer your CPU cycles when your computer is idle for "research" purposes. The only way to deactivate it is to support the program under Help/Support Digsby." <--ENOUGH SAID!
Summary: In it's essence this was a brilliant idea that would have attracted users in the thousands. Add in that it is free and that number goes ten fold. It seemed simple and sleek in its use and was very sparing in the resources that it uses. It made chatt... read more >>
