Editors' Review

Piriform's Defraggler defragments hard drives or individual folders and files and monitors the health and performance of your disc drives and SSDs. Compact and fully portable, Defraggler has an interactive drive map with legend, supports NTFS and FAT32 file systems, includes full and quick defrag options, and integrates with Windows Explorer. Recent updates include Quick Optimize for SSD, the ability to view other disc data during operations, and improved detection of files lacking extensions.

Windows shell integration: Defraggler can replace the built-in Windows defragmentation tool and add Defraggler to context menus; handy for defragmenting individual files and folders.

File relocation: Defraggler has the unique ability to move large files to the back of the disc for faster access of critical and frequently used data.

Health and benchmarking: The Health tab displays disc status. Defraggler also benchmarks drive performance.

Quick Optimize for SSD: Defraggler's Quick Optimize for SSD feature may be of help for older SSDs that don't support TRIM or for Windows XP systems still in service.

Don't defrag SSDs: Defraggler has the ability to defrag SSDs, yet its own Web-based documentation (accessible via the Help menu) acknowledges it's of "little benefit." In fact, defragging can shorten the lifespan of SSDs.

Obsolete: Some find disc defragging quaint in the age of SSDs and terabyte drives. On the other hand, huge archives benefit from better organization and housekeeping.

Bottom Line

Defraggler upholds the tradition of CCleaner and other excellent freeware from Piriform. It's a step up from the built-in Windows tool and similar utilities.

"Defragmentation and "used space" increase with each use"

December 02, 2016  |  By Ronseger

 |  Version: Defraggler 2.21.993

It has a lot of options.

The first time I analyzed my drive, it was at 7% fragmentation. At the end of the first defragmentation, it was at 13%. At the end of my second defragmentation, it was at 25%. At the end of my fourth defragmentation it was at 30%. Also, the used space on the hard drive continues to increase with every fragmentation. After the fourth defragmentation, 'used space' on my hard drive has increased at least 2 GB. I've researched their blog and have made the recommended adjustment to settings. It did not help.

"Best free defragger I've seen."

Used this on multiple machines running Win 7, Win Pro, Vista and now Win 10. Never had any problems: I read the instructions and played with the settings till I found ones that worked.

None I've seen.

Tried free defraggers from others but none worked as well as Defraggler. If you don't read the instructions and adjust the setting(s) for your particular machine then you have no one to blame but yourself(BTW, I have 2.5 TB on 3 internal drives plus 3 external HD's with another 400 GB of storage). If I can update programs/defrag once or twice a week on my desktop PLUS the laptop plus my wife's machine (with 1 TB of storage) then this program can't be that hard to use! Wish I'd found this utility back when I had Win 2000 Pro and was trying to use the Windows defragger(which kept crashing the machine..!). Get it, take the time to read the instructions, adjust the settings and then enjoy it.
