"3.1.2 worked fine. Updated to 3.1.4 and all data gone"

June 14, 2014  |  By Eric Blair

 |  Version: Data Guardian 3.1.4

Pros

Been using Data Guardian for many years and, prior to that, Password Retriever. It has served me well and, until recently, updates were regularly issued.

Cons

I'm concerned that Koingo has changed ownership and is apparent in disarray. Yesterday, June 13 (Friday the 13th, hmmmm)I updated from version 3.1.2 to 3.1.4 and all my data disappeared! Thank goodness, I saved version 3.1.2. when I reinstalled 3.1.2 my data reappeared. Updating to 3.1.4 again eliminated my data. I sent a bug report to Koingo but question if I'll receive a response, since their web site says they are in the process of training a new3 staff and responses to problems may be delayed.

Summary

Data Guardian 3.1.2 worked fine with Mavericks (10.9.3). Version 3.1.4 did not work for me. Company is in ownership/management transition and it may be prudent to wait to see if what emerges is a stable organization. An excellent alternative application is 1Password.

"The overall best in its class!"

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have either bought or tried every database for storing software/hardware registrations, credit card numbers, bank account data, website logins, and etc ... and Data Guardian is the best overall in its class. I can make a template for each category with any thing I want in it; then when I have something new for that category, highlight the template; then click on duplicate and then just fill in that template with the new data. It is the most versatile, and once the templates are made, so easy to use. I store everything in Data Guardian. And the author keeps improving it with small updates or fixes often. But it has never given me a problem ... it is very stable on the latest Mac Pro and OSX.

"Excellent software... excellent support"

October 31, 2007  |  By Skooks

 |  Version: Data Guardian 1.2.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is an excellent database program... has just what I need to keep up with all my software registrations and then some. And, I was most impressed when I ran into a bug in 1.2.1 and reported it to the author. His first reply came about 10 minutes later. After 3 replies of asking me for more detail, he had found the two bugs and updated to 1.2.2 immediately... about as fast as I could go to their website and download it. 1.2.2 works as advertised. Now that is a shareware company that I like to have around. You can't beat a program that fits your need and has excellent support.

"Can not recommend"

April 03, 2007  |  By kenneth_mayer

Summary

I've tried Data Guardian for a couple of weeks now -- the try before you buy period. I've found a few minor nits and some major bugs. E-mail to the developer resulted in a "have you read the documentation" response. (Yes, yes, I did. It was a documentation problem to start with!) DG promotes itself as a way to keep precious data secure. There's no way to verify that since there's no source code. My biggest problem is this: unless you consciously close the data file, or quit the program, the data remains open to view. That's not a good thing if you can't physically secure your computer. There's a feature that supposed to auto-quit the program after a certain time interval, but nothing happens for me.

As I said previously said Data Guardian is an excellent Pw/wallet application: solid, stable and secure! Well worth the shareware fee!
