Daemon Tools Lite is a free tool that lets you create and burn simple disk images and add up to four virtual DVD drives to your system. These drives work just like a physical optical drive, only you don't have to keep shoving disks in and out of the tray. You can store your DVD and CD content on your hard disk and access the data quickly.

Daemon Tools Lite has significant advantages over many similar tools. For instance, it doesn't use a proprietary container format, which makes it widely compatible and gives you more options when burning or checking disks. Daemon Tools Lite mounts most disc image types, and creates ISO, MDS/MDF, and MDX images of CD, DVD, and Blu-ray discs. It also compresses disc images and enables password protection.

Daemon Tools Lite's user interface is plain and simple but with an efficient layout that is crisply rendered. The larger of two windows displays your Image Catalog; below it, a narrow window displays your added drives, starting with the first virtual drive. Daemon Tools Lite creates two types of virtual drive: DT virtual devices, which offer basic emulating capabilities, and SCSI virtual devices, which emulate discs with special signatures such as security locks. Most users will find DT virtual devices sufficient for day-to-day use. The toolbar separating the upper and lower windows contains all of Daemon Tools Lite's controls, starting with Add Image controls. We could mount and unmount images, add DT and SCSI virtual devices, remove existing virtual drives, and create disc images. A Preferences tool let us configure everything from Hotkeys to Confirmations.

Daemon Tools Lite is easy to use. We clicked Add Image, browsed to some ISO images, and added them to the Image Catalog. Then it was a simple matter of selecting drive and image and clicking the Mount arrow. We were able to access our new drive normally in Explorer. Daemon Tools Lite is a great choice for laptops, especially those that lack optical drives. But anyone who uses DVDs or CDs for data or pleasure can save time and power by using virtual disc drives instead of spinning plastic.

"Updating installs malware"

November 26, 2013  |  By chimpsmith

 |  Version: Daemon Tools Lite 4.47.1

Pros

-Worked fine before I updated it

Cons

Updating to the newest version as prompted immediately installed malware. Was pretty difficult to get rid of. Daemon Tools has been known for some time now to connect to other companies' servers to share info and try to install stuff, but this is absurd.

The DT team has repeatedly claimed they have clean installs, although this is also known to be false, as one of the main companies they make money from is a well known malware spreader. They've actually had to put restrictions on posting on their forums because of how many messages regarding the newest release and malware they're getting. It's pitiful, and they're trying to cover it up.

Summary

Don't waste your time on this. Even if you opt out of installing junkware, some users *still* have it installed. I didn't even get such an option when I updated, and it took me hours to get rid of this crap. To make matters worse, it seems that DT may assist in automatically reinstalling the malware, as it only stopped starting with windows and reinstalling once I removed Daemon Tools. Stay away.

"INSTALLS SPYWARE - see Daemon tools forums"

July 24, 2013  |  By mrbobdou

 |  Version: Daemon Tools Lite 4.47.1

Pros

Program runs great, minus the spyware/adware that installs during the setup.

Cons

Installs spyware, even if you de-check all of the boxes during the install: http://forum.daemon-tools.cc/f33/spyware-daemon-tools-lite-installer-29962/

"An easy to use, efficient virtual drive."

June 20, 2013  |  By Bdrewsy

 |  Version: Daemon Tools Lite 4.47.1

Pros

- Very simple to use.
- Offers support for a wide variety of file formats
- Low impact on system resources

Cons

- Installer does try to install some Adware (see summary)

Summary

To those that think they are *forced* to install the Adware from this program, please read properly before you click buttons. At the time of this writin

Updated on Jun 20, 2013

Whoops, hit the wrong button there.

At the time of this writing you merely select the "Custom Install" option, un-check the box that will install all the adware junk and then hit next. A confirmation window then pops up of which you should read properly before clicking any of the buttons. Unlike what one would assume, this confirmation window is about installing the adware and clicking the "Ok" button gives the program permission to do so. You must click cancel to continue the install and to avoid installing the junk.

This is why I took off a star from an otherwise perfectly good product. It does something a bit sneaky in the hopes of getting people to install the adware. Based on the amount of people saying how they're forced to install the adware, it's doing a good job.

So really, basic computer usage 101 people: Always read the message boxe before clicking any of the buttons. It will save you a ton of trouble.

"Fetch the "clean" one ppl....."

June 08, 2013  |  By vmax22

 |  Version: Daemon Tools Lite 4.47.1

Pros

Use the "Direct Download Link" and it works like a dream. Nice program.

Cons

For those ppl having a BAD experience with adware, note: The Big Green Button is clearly marked with "CNET Installer Enabled". When you see that, look for their "Direct Download Link" instead.

CNET's installer (571-kb in size)comes with a layer of adware endorsed by CNET, that's how they generate advertising income. You're under no obligation to use it if you don't want to. CNET kindly provide the direct link for direct download of the actual program (13.26-MB in size). Try it.

Unfortunately ppl confuse the BAD experience with perfectly good programs, like Daemon Tools.

Summary

Works just fine.

"Too much malware."

May 25, 2013  |  By Damien_Diabolos

 |  Version: Daemon Tools Lite 4.47.1

Pros

The virtual drive works.

Cons

Tries to trick you into installing junk/malware, but even if you read carefully and choose not to install it, it goes ahead and does so anyway. I installed this, knowing they'd ad junk without my permission, thinking I could just easily uninstall it afterward. Nope. They went out of their way making it difficult to remove. Crap like this should be illegal. Heck, it probably is.

Summary

Try to find something safer.

"Poor install process, closes browsers without asking"

May 21, 2013  |  By maxingwell76

 |  Version: Daemon Tools Lite 4.47.1

Pros

Didn't get passed installer but have used before. Is OK as an ISO mounter.

Cons

Tries to install unwanted software.
Would be goo dif you could get this without all the adware and a decent installer that doesn't close all your open browsers!

Summary

Really poor instalation process. I didn't get to install it as it closed my browsers and tried to install unwanted software. Gave up on it at this point.
