From the makers of the popular scene rendering program Bryce comes DAZ Studio, a powerful freeware 3D modeling and CAD program that looks great, but is a resource hog and can be sluggish for the average user.
The publisher recommends at least 256MB of RAM, but we found that to be wishful thinking. The program runs choppily on anything less than 1GB, although some of the more complex rendering was processed more slowly than others. It also requires an OpenGL compatible graphics card with at least 128MB of RAM onboard, so machines built before 2003 will certainly struggle. This isn't unusual for this kind of program, though.
DAZ offers up a wide array of built-in models and tools and for creating, animating, and recording life-like scenes. Users can purchase additional models through the publisher's Web site. Free tutorials on the site take a bit of the edge off the learning curve, although it's still steep. The feature set is nothing short of incredible: You can take a model, manipulate it, add detail and texture, have it interact with other models, and manage your art files. The tool panels on the left and right navigation bars can be hidden, to maximize screen space, and all the tools have mouse-over labels to help newbies learn what's what. There are also components for easy export to other programs like Photoshop.
According to the publisher, the program is compatible with Windows Vista, however, we were unable to install it on our Enterprise edition. Also, all users must register on the publisher's Web site to get the free serial number for the program.

"Quick and easy (and FREE) way to get into 3D. Love the new features!"
Pros: I've been using DAZ since version 1.7 and this upgrade is TERRIFIC!
I'm using a Windows Vista Home Edition and it is working fine.
New users will find the QuickStart feature and the built in tutorials useful help with the learning curve which actually isn't that bad. It also includes several models including a EZ version of Victoria 4.2 and some other useful bits of stuff like Cyclorama that were not in older versions of D/S to get you started quickly.
Old DAZ users will really appreciate the new file organization system. Whoever finally decided to implement this was a genius! You can finally organize your Runtime the way YOU work. Less clicking through folders trying to remember what you have and where you put it... or if you like the old system, you can still keep it that way too.
Cons: One drawback is the built-in content specifically from DAZ 2.0 (i.e. Mil Dragon LE, Mil Horse, etc) uses the same installer as DAZ 2.0... so when you try to upgrade, that specific content gets uninstalled with DAZ 2.0... whoops. As far as I can tell nothing else disappears.
So if you are using DAZ 2.0 and you want to keep your dragon, dog, cat, and horse... make a copy of your runtime somewhere else and add it as an external runtime later or you will lose them.
Finally, for NEW users, don't forget to download the free Poser DAZ Studio 3D Models Pack 1 elsewhere on this site to expand your selection of start up 3D characters.

Version: DAZ Studio 2.1.1.13
"Amazing. Very easy to use with professional results."
Pros: Very easy to get into, you'll figure it out within an hour. Everything is provided - models, clothes, locations - all you do is take an item, load it into the viewing window, manipulate it and render. Professional results in only a few minutes.
Cons: Tutorials are a waste of time, don't bother with them.
The software is unstable and will frequently crash.
Very expensive if you want to get the most of it, you'll need to buy a lot of stuff once you get going.
