From the makers of the popular scene rendering program Bryce comes DAZ Studio, a powerful freeware 3D modeling and CAD program that looks great, but is a resource hog and can be sluggish for the average user.
The publisher recommends at least 256MB of RAM, but we found that to be wishful thinking. The program runs choppily on anything less than 1GB, although some of the more complex rendering was processed more slowly than others. It also requires an OpenGL compatible graphics card with at least 128MB of RAM onboard, so machines built before 2003 will certainly struggle. This isn't unusual for this kind of program, though.
DAZ offers up a wide array of built-in models and tools and for creating, animating, and recording life-like scenes. Users can purchase additional models through the publisher's Web site. Free tutorials on the site take a bit of the edge off the learning curve, although it's still steep. The feature set is nothing short of incredible: You can take a model, manipulate it, add detail and texture, have it interact with other models, and manage your art files. The tool panels on the left and right navigation bars can be hidden, to maximize screen space, and all the tools have mouse-over labels to help newbies learn what's what. There are also components for easy export to other programs like Photoshop.
According to the publisher, the program is compatible with Windows Vista, however, we were unable to install it on our Enterprise edition. Also, all users must register on the publisher's Web site to get the free serial number for the program.

Version: DAZ Studio 1.8.2.1
Pros: I need to sit down and study this. It looks very interesting, the figures are very realistic and I'd like to learn how to make and animate them.
Cons: Seems to be a lot of selling going on - not that you have to buy. At least I don't think so.

Version: DAZ Studio 1.8.2.1
Pros: No idea.
Cons: I've downloaded the app, but totally don't know what it could do. It is not like Sketchup which provides you with tutorials. You will be lost. You need to purchase features like expressions, movement, clothing etc.
Don't waste your time. It could be the best app, but you won't know how to use it.

"Great software for the budding 3D Artist"
Pros: DAZ|Studio is a great piece of software. True, there is a fairly steep learning curve. And you do need to download content . But the latter is solved easily by going DAZ web site.
Once at the site, use their search engine to find: "3D Bridge Starter Pack" (just search on 'bridge' and it will show up.) It will get you started with some nice models. Also, join the forum. That gives you more access to free models (and a friendly, helpful group of people). FInally, look for the archive and you'll find more (though some may require the purchase of other software) free models.
As to learning, remember you don't learn a skill set without some practice. Their manual (available at their site as a pdf - 400+ pages) provides a great start in the first chapters to get you into creating 3d images quickly. Then progress at your own pace. Also, numerous tutorials created by the users are on the site and give help for the newbie and the pro. Finally, post a question in the appropriate forum. You'll get a quick answer from people who use it.
BTW, I don't work for DAZ.... I just love the software and the folks at the forums. And Studio.
