"Blu Ray glitch"

November 14, 2009  |  By AlbertFrankenstine

 |  Version: CyberLink PowerDVD 9.1501D

Pros

It plays every format other than the one I bought it to play.

Cons

Blu Ray playback drops frames, freezes, and lacks the resolution of even a basic stand-alone player.

Summary

My system is the latest and greatest of most components, I'm an IT professional. I'm running windows 7. All my stuff is HDCP compliant. BluRay on PowerDVD9 won't run smooth for long. It starts dropping frames after about 15 seconds, then starts freezing after a minute or two. Support from Cyberlink is the usual on-line type. No human contact, just emails asking you to jump through hours of hoops to isolate the problem - that never gets fixed. The problems is that the blu ray codecs are incomplete and sometimes not compatible with all titles. HDCP hinders perfect playback. Unless you are an expert in the field of programming and know how use the perfect combination of setting between your OS and this application - DON"T TRY THIS app for blu ray. Or if you're OK with glitchy, chunky playback - then by all means, get PowerDVD9 or WinDVD plus.

Just do yourself a favor and go buy a stand alone BluRay player. They're only about $50 to $60 more than this software package.

"limited user definabilities, buggy, barely adequate"

April 09, 2009  |  By jonathan614

 |  Version: CyberLink PowerDVD 9.1501D

Pros

plays bd, after upgrade of codecs etc

Cons

so many
bad navigation, bad user interface, very little ability to change interface to my needs. it does not recognize my s/pdif out, which is a HUGE PROBLEM. it is buggy, lags even on dvds.

Summary

even if you need blu ray capabilities, i would look around more. this is barely adequate for that, and very expensive for what little you get. i have better playing abilities of dvds on media player classic or zoom player through CCCP. they have bugs, but no more than this, and are overall user definable, and they are free.

Updated on Apr 9, 2009

no dts, / dolby digital. and without this recognizing my spdif (this software is the only one that does not!!!) i guess it does not matter as i won't even get any dolby digital effects decoding. if you only need to play dvds and videos (any format), go CCCP (for free).

"Could be great if..."

April 05, 2009  |  By ranthon007

 |  Version: CyberLink PowerDVD 9.1501D

Pros

Nice interface
Good quality playback, especially for HD content

Cons

Navigation of files sucks
Very high resource hog
Video tweaks are horrible

Summary

I own both PowerDVD9 and WinDVD8. I hated WinDVD8, not because of its set up but because it is so buggy so I tried PowerDVD9 and I wasted my money. WinDVD8 gets so much more right, if only it were more stable. First, navigation in PowerDVD is absolutely HORRIBLE. You cannot fast forward, step, rewind, etc. without the player stalling badly (and not I have a decent system with a dual core proc-WinDVD 8 works just fine). Moreover, the color and visual adjustments are no where near the quality of WinDVD8. In short, PowerDVD9 SUCKS but it could be great given how good the quality of the video is. IMO anyone who does not need HD playback should just find a free copy of WinDVD 6 which is the best ever. I hope Corel makes an effort with WinDVD 9 but I have only used the limed trial version. I have been burned by these video companies too many times now to pay out anymore money. No more until I get a full 30 day trial--and by full I mean every feature enabled--i.e. don't disable the ones that crash and stall my PC!!!! This is why people turn to pirating software, I am about there.

"I have not been able to install the trial download !!!"

April 04, 2009  |  By Joey2Pi

 |  Version: CyberLink PowerDVD 9.1501D

Pros

Do know, can't install the trial to run it!

Cons

There is no installation information pertaining to the trial download, I have had a great deal of trouble finding the software. I am NOT a novice as I have been working on computers since 1977.

Summary

I do not like that no reply to my repeated emails to Cyberlink have been received. The software seemed to be what I wanted but Cyberlink may have lost a sale to me.

Summary

I have installed CyberLinks "DVD Solutions", which I like, I particularly like the "Capture" facility as I film my wife dancing, and then using Capture make printable stills. I assumed that PowerDVD 9.0 would behave like an update, But no. DVD Solutions is still in place plus PowerDVD 9.0, BUT CAPTURE NO LONGER WORKS IN EITHER PROGRAM. any ideas???

"great product with a lousy upgrade policy"

March 14, 2009  |  By bmcampbell

 |  Version: CyberLink PowerDVD 9.1501D

Pros

nice interface

Cons

I just bought powerdvd 8.0 less than a week before 9.0 was launched. There was no indication on their website that a new version was coming out. Now, to upgrade to new version i have to pay.... i think im done with PowerDVD!!!

Summary

Updated on Apr 3, 2009

Well, to date cyberlink hasn't returned my inquiries as to why they charged me a full upgrade price for powerdvd 8.0 and require me to pay the same upgrade price for powerdvd 9.0 . I was wondering why I don't have version powerdvd 9.0 ultra. I bought version 8.0 at full price 1 week before 9.0 came out. There was no warning on sight that a new version was pending. Cyberlink, your policy just makes me want buy windvd; they are #1 in my mind.

"To many mandatory xtras & problems"

March 14, 2009  |  By DaDreamWizard

 |  Version: CyberLink PowerDVD 9.1501D

Pros

Problem here as since last update of prior version when starting a movie or dvd it
automatically shuts down.

Cons

It has developed a conflict thst did not exist before. Shame is, the best features,
upgrading the video options look to be promising indeed. But with all those other
items, trying to solve it's main function is like pulling teeth.

Summary

This would have had a chance of beating WinDVD in the quality department. But the
mostly irritating add ons are built in and bothersome.

For that I am sad, but with that said, everyone else will up their ante also, so....
