Customizing your MSN Instant Messenger is simple and free with this software, although some of the graphics in the collection are outdated.
CustoMess has a cool interface with neatly laid categories to easily select and install the package you want. Packages include display pics, emoticons, backgrounds, and fonts. The program has six categories and two custom generators to make your own valentine candy messages and backgrounds.
With generous images per category, the best thing going here is that you won't have to add the pictures one by one and then create a keyboard shortcut for each as you normally would. CustoMess automatically adds each image from a package to your My Emoticons window and assigns a shortcut for you. You'll appreciate how quickly each package installs, although the program initially launches slowly when opened.
Many of the graphics included aren't the best we've seen, and they look dated. We also aren't sure how often updates are given. With that being the case, IM fans will like the variety and ease of use CustoMess provides.

No mentioning that the emiticons that you can add are all "built in" onces that are pulled from their server from within the application; it doesnt seem you can add your own collections, which is again not mentioned. Download.com review is less than useful in that regard.

I'm using an older version of MSN (7.0, I believe... the one before the voice clips) as Windows 2000 won't let me upgrade, but, at least in my version, the emoticon fonts are fairly useless, as you can only send five custom emoticons per message.
RARELY updates. I've had this for about a year, and under the "latest packs" heading, there are only three that weren't there when I downloaded this program.

It "edits" in the form of a web browser. I have Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006 set to "prompt on ActiveX" controls - and there were a LOT of them, going to WEB DOMAINS of DIFFERENT DOMAINS. - and for each that i chose "Block This Instance" was a feature that did nothing.
