Editor's review of CryptoTunnel

  • "CryptoTunnel"
  • Version reviewed: CryptoTunnel 1.7

Users can surf (almost) anonymously with this surprisingly easy-to-set-up privacy tool. CryptoTunnel's block button and standard information list dialog isn't going to win any design awards. However, the sheer ease of setting up this utility will thrill novices looking for that one privacy step past their firewalls.

Two minutes after installing CryptoTunnel, you're surfing with Internet Explorer--without revealing your IP address. If you use Firefox, MSN Messenger, ICQ, or Yahoo Messenger, add another 30 seconds. Enabling this tool for those applications takes a single click each and maybe a setting change or two. Usually CryptoTunnel makes the setting change automatically. After implementing this tool, you can surf or chat as you normally do, but with a bit more privacy; its not complete privacy though. While your public IP won't show up, other online activities aren't so easily shielded.

We're disappointed that CryptoTunnel didn't spend much effort with the Help screens or manual. You're on your own to find methods to ensure privacy for other promised applications, such as e-mail clients. The trial is a scant seven days. Yet we're more than happy to recommend this useful tool to any level browser user. Enabling other applications will take patience and the experience of more advanced users.
