This free privacy-protection application handles the basics but lacks most of the advanced features we like to see. CoverMyTracks's main claim to fame is it erases Web-surfing tracks, including cookies, temporary files, and typed URLs. However, the program only functions with Internet Explorer. And though the application can clear your PC's Recent Documents list, it cannot clean up other system areas. Nor will you find support for any third-party programs beyond Windows Media Player. The file shredder is a nice touch, but it only lets you eradicate one document at a time and doesn't utilize secure government-sanctioned algorithms. On the plus side, CoverMyTracks performed fine in our tests, and its self-explanatory interface isn't likely to confound even greenhorns. Internet Explorer users who don't want to dig around in their browser settings to clear their surfing history are this program's most likely audience.
