Summary

I like Sony Vegas. But version 12 doesn't support XP. So i tried PowerDirectior, and i couldn't get it right because somehow, i couldn't import any HD video. Then i tried this software and found it quite useful. People say that they have freezing problem with XP, but i don't. People say that the customer service sucks, but i don't need that. So to me, until now, it's a pretty good software.

"Corel -- The Worst Customer Service Policies"

Summary

I am a long time user of VideoStudio, starting when it was ULead software, and decided to upgrade my version x2 Pro to x5 Pro Ultimate.

When I did the install I didn't uninstall my version x2. I received no errors during the verX5 process, and upon opening the program, I was instructed to download an update by Corel to it's Service Pack1. After following all the instructions and installing the Bonus disk which came with the "Ultimate" bundle, I launched the software.

The opening screen of Video Studio defaults to show the "Samples" folder and the media clips provided by Corel, which visually show up.

Hmmm -- no "samples" appeared -- no images, audio or video files??

OK - so I then tried to download (import) my own media into the library, and the error message kept appearing saying that the file format was not recognized. I tried images, audio and video files using standard file conventions -- the same error message appeared. (These were on "known good files".)

So ... maybe the problem had to do with a conflict with my VideoStudio verX2 which I still had installed on my computer.

I uninstalled this older version of Video Studio, and made sure my computer was scrubbed of all shortcuts and files.

Re-booted, cleaned my registry files (using my Norton Utilities), and launched verX5. Same problem -- no "Samples" clips and couldn't import my known-good media files.

Uninstalled, and reinstalled VideoStudio vX5 plus the other programs that were installed associated with this program -- cleaned the registry files -- STILL HAD THE SAME PROBLEM!

Ok -- after spending about 2-3 hours on all the above, as well as poking into some other areas (directX, etc.) -- I decided to contact Corel.

COREL DOES NOT HAVE A CUSTOMER SUPPORT PHONE NUMBER!!!!

I went on Corel's website and started a "Chat" -- I tried to explain via text entry, what the problem was that I was having. The person who I was chatting with just didn't get it. I had rediculious responses to my inputs, but when I was asked what kind of camera I had that I used to take the pictures of the image files I was trying to import into VideoStudio -- I lost it.

I was then told that I would be contacted by Corel via email to address the software problems.

The following day I received an email by Corel's customer support saying they were reviewing my chat file, and I would be contacted within 48 business hours.

4 days later I received an email from Corel reviewing my problems, with a "to do" list of items -- below is the content of their email:

"I have checked on your conversation with one of our chat agents and you mentioned once there that the files you were trying to import through VideoStudio Pro X5 are all from your iTunes library. Please note that when a file comes from the iTunes library, these files are all copyright protected and could not be imported through VideoStudio Pro X5, mainly because of copyright protection issues.

However, if VideoStudio Pro X5 still cannot import any files that are not from your iTunes library, then you may want to try downloading the codec updates from the links provided below:

* Microsoft Direct X DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer --- [...]
* QuickTime Player ---[...]
* Real Player ---[...]
* DivX --- [...]
* Xvid ---[...]
* FFDSHOW ---[...]

You may also want to follow the steps from the attached article to reset the program to its default settings."

You have got to be kidding!!!

Corel -- Get your act together and provide phone support to insure your software can be installed.

I consider myself beyond a "novice" computer user -- though I'm not an expert.

What about someone who is a novice?? Does Corel honestly think their customer support approach is viable???

Oh, and by the way my final email that I sent to Corel's Customer Support Contact with my complaint was also copied to Corel's CEO - Thom Berguist. It's been 1 week since I sent that email, and no response from Corel Managment. Am I surprised -- NO.

Thank you Amazon for accepting the return of this software.

Corel -- Shame on you!! Why are you still in business???

"Some good points but Needs Improvement"

Pros

Compatible with most formats, easy to import video and very user friendly for basic edits. Adding music and simple titles also a breeze. Exporting to various formats is relatively simple.

Cons

The program (in Win XP) has been unstable and often freezes. There is compatibility issues with MOV files. I have found that movies using MOV files have audio problems. Trying to simply burn a DVD is ridiculously cumbersome.

Summary

Can't really recommend this program at this time. I am shopping around for alternative.

"Fails Basic Integration & Stability Level. Excellent FX"

Has Excellent Special Effects/ Transitions And Frills Along With Gorgeous Menu Templates Motion-Effects

Cons

1. When chapter points are created and named with specific content-based names in the Edit/Timeline stage or the Disk-Authoring stage - aif ONE chapter point is deleted or added either in the timeline (leaving the time code for the other chapter points untouched) OR in the disk menu, then ALL this information, all the specific chapter names is obliterated and AS WELL the customised background images and music revert to the Generic menu - ALL The Work is Totally Lost
2. If a Transition is altered/added to Chapter Points, the Chapter Points are moved along the video timelines a considerable distance from their original insertion point vis a vis the video track appearing 1-3 seconds after the chapterlead. All The other Work in the Disk Authoring Stage Is Lost - poor "Ripple Effect"' facility
3. Export Function Is Compromised - producing unreliable .mpg and .avi.
4. Import Function is much better including all high definition formats. Does Not import VOB files.

Summary

The frills and special effects are Excellent. But It Fails On The Most Basic (Free) Entry Level Functions. It Is Poorly Integrated between Timeline and Disk-Authoring - a huge amount of work is lost because of its ineptness in dealing with simple actions that other programs in 2003 had no problem with It Is Unstable. It Freezes Despite The Resource Monitor Showing Large Amounts of Spare CPU and RAM.
The Email Support Service of Corel pretends there is not a problem and then will claim that the case has been inactive 10 days despite a flood of emails well within the period. They tell the customer that "the problem has been resolved" - when it hasn'tA Disaster - for what could have been a wonderful program. Get The Basics Right - Your Frills Are Gorgeous!

"The best video editor out there"

Pros

1 Make the videos as complex as you want. They won't freeze.

2 The amount of content such as the effects, transition, and screens are really worth the free trial.

3 The editor has a beautiful interface.

4 In the Tools menu, there is a paint editor that comes along.

Cons

The one and only thing that I do not like about the software is the copy and paste feature. You can only paste one clip per copy.

Summary

Cyberlink PowerDirector is said to be the world's fastest and leading video software, but I find that Corel beats it.

"Surprised at how much I liked it."

Pros

The trial version did not crash, stall, and to my knowledge and usage came with the ability to try out all the features.
Intuitive
Priced comparable
Features comparable with current market
Rendering and Burning were within acceptable time limits for size of file
Loads of features, more than I would probably use

Cons

Frustrated at figuring out how to remove default settings when creating disc- but once I set my mind and time aside to figure it out- it was okay.
Received errors originally when trying to burn DVD- but turned out it was my Disc and not the software.

Summary

I have used Corel Paint and have not enjoyed using it,don't know why- can't put my finger on why. Expected the same with this- pleasantly surprised this was not the case. Our family has used several other Editing software (Adobe, Final Cut, Pinnacle, etc) and this was very similar to all, which made it easy to jump in and start a quick project to test it out. I was waffling between Corel VS or Cyberlink. Tried Corel first...and went on to try Cyberlink fully expecting to choose it. I will not. Boy am I surprised. Had isses with Cyberlink stalling and crashing, freezing, etc but that aside-Some aspects of Corel were just easier to use- smoother work flow. 98% sure this is the one I am getting.

"Rendering problems and Filter problems."

Many features, but most people will never use most of them.

Cons

"Corel VideoStudio Pro X5 Trial" has a slow start up, big program using up much memory and taking away memory to render DVD's. I captured a 1hr. 12min. video and had a problem rendering a 4.28GB DVD. It compressed to about 3GB taking 32min with lower resolution. My "Corel VideoStudio Pro X2" worked correct rendering the same 1hr. 12min. video in 16min. with no compression making a DVD 4.28GB with the highest resolution and fitting on a single side DVD. I give "Corel VideoStudio Pro X5" 1-Star because they fixed the basic problems with "Corel VideoStudio Pro X4". I had another problem using one new filter called "unnoise" it took 10hr. 20min. to render and made a 2GB DVD with no sound fix. Don't need that new filter. Corel is offering me a $49 upgrade with in one week. I downloaded the Trial "Corel VideoStudio Pro X5" to test and I don't think I will be wasting $49 for new problems.
