In the age of high definition videos, video recorder, and TV screens, Corel's latest video-editing and -processing app, Corel VideoStudio Pro X3, had better add some HD features to its midlevel tool set aimed at enthusiasts. And it has. VideoStudio Pro X3 adds burning to Blu-ray in addition to the standard DVD format--you can do both with the bonus DVD Movie Factory Pro 2010 app that comes as part of the package.

The app now also sports a darker, sleeker-looking interface. In addition to a simpler menu for easy editing, there's now an advanced edit menu. Some menu items, feature arrangements, and tabs have been tweaked to improve the accessibility of certain tools. A project mode with built-in templates is also making its way into the app for the first time. The fresh ability to transfer the attributes from one video clip to another may not be monumental, but for many people editing videos, that type of instant copying will be instrumental, not to mention will smooth over a frustrating workflow snag.

As with other Corel products, online sharing includes YouTube and Vimeo video upload sites, Facebook, and mobile phones. In the past we've dinged Corel VideoStudio Pro for its slower-than-average processing. Corel now boasts that version X3 of its VideoStudio Pro editor is 2.5 times faster than version X2.

As with other products in Corel's line, Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 presents a straightforward design and useful editing tools that new users can pick up right away. The program isn't as strong as professional apps, which can also cost much more, but there are nice tools above basic levels for editing videos and creating projects in multiple formats, including burning movies and uploading video projects. If you're a midlevel (enthusiast) user who doesn't relish the fuss of pro software's many hidden (and sometimes obscure) filters and features, you should give Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 a trial run.

When it comes down to creating videos and photo slideshows, however, the program is top-notch. It even lets an amateur turn video footage into a finished film--complete with transitions, picture-in-picture, and effects--with a minimal learning curve. You can capture video from the program's interface, import HDV and AVCHD, or import video from a file, a digital camera, or a DV camcorder. The handy interface lets you create an animated title screen, assemble a film by dragging and dropping audio and video fragments, and applying transitions onto the montage line. We like the new paint feature that lets you draw or write freehand on your videos making it easy to add thought balloons or draw your travel route on a map, for example. The new picture-in-picture and montage effects add even more polish to your home video projects.

The video-editing module contains a large library of filters, effects, and tools. You can share your video online, and even burn a VCD or SVCD with the built-in burner. New end-to-end HD support also allows you to import and burn in HDV and AVCHD. Assuming you have enough patience and a great hardware setup, Corel VideoStudio should appeal to home-video enthusiasts.

"Crashes often & fails to render large mp4"

January 02, 2014  |  By Holybride

 |  Version: Corel VideoStudio Pro X3

Pros

I compare Corel to Avid, Corel has better video result & better sound quality (for live performances audio) than Avid.

Cons

Corel doesn't have a lot of effects or any photo slides, crashes almost all the time (very very often / within minutes), & fails at 99% while rendering a High Definition mp4 (the file is gone/not created at all), the picture in picture effect reduces the quality of the picture/video that is using the effect.

Summary

It's very easy to use, very convenient than Avid, but I have to think again of using it as it crashes almost every 20 minutes or so.

"Corel VideoStudio Pro X3"

November 10, 2011  |  By Zotz01

 |  Version: Corel VideoStudio Pro X3

Pros

Sorry , None , unless you like throwing money away then this is your software.

Cons

The program just dosent work as advertised ,it is slow to capture ,many times cant finish the capture process .And if it does? The audio has snaps, pops and squeels . But my Biggest Con would be ...No customer service or help , as a matter of fact they seem to run you through a maze ,which gets you back to nowhere.

Summary

This program flat out dosent work as advertised, and Corel seems to know it so they dodge the help issue with puzzles and mazes.
Shame , Shame , on you Corel . I will never buy
again :(

"Initially a great product - customer service poor."

March 26, 2011  |  By messenger315

 |  Version: Corel VideoStudio Pro X3

Pros

Easy to use and quick to learn for the beginner. Import and organization on the fly with dazzling presentation within the application.

Cons

Flash objects failed. Rendering process crashes within 5 minutes. Online customer support, simply is nonexistent. Be prepared to wait 45 minutes for phone help.

Summary

I believe at its core the software is a wonderful and easy package to use. Never having used such a product in the past, I was quickly able to produce a 45 minute video for my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. Import, organization and the many embedded special features to make the video a dazzling presentation worked very well. However, this product requires the use of Flash objects as you select templated transitions and special effects, as well as in the rendering of the final video. Flash simply failed to work most of the time. Also, and most importantly the embedded rendering process would crash about 5 minutes into the video rendering process, every time. I attempted to get resolution for this issue from Corel, and even though they provide several avenues to seek customer support, none work. You can attempt to chat, but the link was never open; you can email them with a question, and you'll be placed in an infinite loop of patches and fixes that fail as well; and you can also call their tech support that is if you don't mind holding for 45 minutes or more. I gave this Corel product a 1 star for that fact alone. You can't even write a formal complaint letter, just try to find an address... I grade a company's software on their ability and willingness to stand behind it and provide support when needed, on this aspect Corel fails miserably.

"Total Waste of time"

January 20, 2011  |  By NWJeeper

 |  Version: Corel VideoStudio Pro X3

Pros

None, Won't install.

Cons

Won't install

Summary

Tried to install the trial version but it kept saying my drive with 20gb free space didn't have enough room to install this 2.5gb trial. Re apportioned my hard drive space and tried again. Over and over and over again I would get a message saying "Configuring Direct X" then a screen that says "your system has not been altered" with nothing more of an explanation than "-9" *** does -9 mean!

I have used Ulead Media Studio Pro 8 for several years and it has been a real workhorse. Too bad it can't do HD and that they sold out to these complete buffoons (Corel). Judging by the huge numbers of complaints here about this software makes we wonder if those that are rating this software 4 or 5 stars have ever used a good video editing program or perhaps they are plants by Corel trying to get the ratings up on this huge POS. I had tried a predecessor to this software shortly after Corel bought out the product from Ulead and found it disappointing. Now it is just plain useless.

I will try Sony Vegas next in my search for HD video editing sofware.

"If you like edit crashes every 5 minutes, buy this now!"

January 17, 2011  |  By droine

 |  Version: Corel VideoStudio Pro X3

Pros

Ease of use. Fairly straight forward and ergonomic setup. Nice "Share" options.

Cons

More crashes than a demolition derby. So frustrating! There's no way to send your files as Corel suggests. An update box appears when you open Corel that won't allow you to because, "its open", of course it's open! I opened it so I could edit! Jeez!

Summary

It's obvious that Corel designers, engineers and product testers have never communicated with each other, or they would have encountered these inexcusable flaws and corrected them. I'm very disappointed that I can't find any easy way to contact them directly. The product has real potential. If Corel would only test these features with real editors in real editing situations they could maybe correct these issues. My wife has the same problems on a different computer with a different operating system. I can not recommend Corel VideoStudio Pro X3.

"If you wanna to loose time...."

January 11, 2011  |  By Alex_Redeemer

 |  Version: Corel VideoStudio Pro X3

Pros

Video format compatibilities...
The PRO extension in the name, make it look very professional ( but it only looks )...

Cons

Editing here is good for joining few videos together and no more...
No a short help about the tool coming with the tool...
I would never buy this stuff...

Summary

Well... these guys have no idea of what a Smart Video Editing is...
May be this Demo is old, dunno, for me do not crashes, but hangs a lot, quite slow, Editing and trying to sync with music is a nightmare...
I can not believe this tool has the 'PRO' extension... I would call it 'for Nerds'...

Few simple things to note from the Demo I downloaded here, hoping may be improved:

The Time Line is not scrolling while playing a project, so, you have no Idea of where you are in the Video...
If you stop the playing to keep a reference in time, be sure that as you touch anything in the TimeLine, the reference is lost, time cursor almost certainly moves away...
If you zoom in the timeline, and click to select on a video clip, automatically the time cursor goes to the start of the clip, and if you are zoomed in, you are lost...
Overlying tracks are unusable, if you do not want to make special effects, so, no way to edit with AB-Roll technique as you can not choose an AB transition for overlaying, AB-Roll would speed up editing a lot...
The extraction of video form a bigger videoclip is not really selectable, as, there are 2 cursors for start and end of the selection, but I found no way to move them together... this makes the lasting of the videoclip to extend or reduce each time, making all the following to shift, as I said, if you want to sync with music, this is a real problem, as all synced changes are lost at once...

A good video editor is good if editing is good, not if it has a lot of effects...

"Crashes! Version 13.6.2.42 downloaded Jan 2011"

January 09, 2011  |  By Scoobie2

 |  Version: Corel VideoStudio Pro X3

Pros

The 30-day trial saves you wasting your money

Cons

Totally unusable!

Summary

Video Studio X3 Version 13.6.2.42 (downloaded 9th Jan 2011). Unusable as program causes Windows blue screen crashes after a few minutes every time I use it. Displays a message saying "The program has encountered an unspecified error and has stopped functioning. Please contact Corel Technical Support and send them the dump file for analysis." Windows is frozen from here on, and attempting to restart the system from the task manager causes the blue screen crash.

No hardware devices are attached and I am simply trying to join clips of .mov files made on a Canon IXUS-100 camera. Total time of movie would be >8 minutes!

I have sent 2 dump files to Corel.

System: HP NX6325 laptop, CPU: AMD Sempron 3400+ 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM, video ATI Radeon Xpress, 250GB HDD (170GB free)
OS XP Professional Version 2002 SP3 with latest updates
