What you get with the latest version of PaintShop Pro is a midlevel photo editor with a low learning curve and some very nice editing and output features. The easily navigable interface puts photos front and center and surrounds them with tools and menus. It doesn't have all the pixel-pushing prowess of its pricier competitors, but PaintShop Pro X3 does add a few significant enhancements and new features. Support for HD video projects is the biggie here, as more users are investing in fancier digital cameras and in high-def computers and TV screens.

Shutterbugs will also appreciate the new RAW feature (called the RAW Lab), which is a specialized editor for processing RAW images. It's a feature similar to those found in Adobe's Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Lightroom.

Corel has also acknowledged an uptick in the popularity of social networks by baking in more sharing options, specifically for Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube. In addition to sprinkling some new editing tools into PaintShop Photo Pro X3, Corel has turned on the capability to import and export HD videos. The multimedia photo editor contains templates for photo projects found in other Corel products, like Corel Digital Studio 2010. Though the templates offer simple, visually exciting ways to get started on a photo book or a slide show, those who dip into them often will find themselves limited to the same handful of designs.

It's clear that PaintShop Pro X3 is aimed at enthusiast-level photographers who prefer a clean, all-in-one app to not just edit but also process their photos onto a disc, an online album, or a photo project like a slideshow. Pros who prefer to get into the nitty gritty details of image editing should look elsewhere, but others would benefit from downloading PaintShop Pro's trial software.

"Review of X3 but download of X5"

January 24, 2013  |  By Musicman762

 |  Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

Pros

Review of Corel Paintshop Photo Pro X3 fine.

Cons

We were given a review of Corel Paintshop Photo Pro X3 and promised a trial download of Corel Paintshop Photo Pro X3 but were actually given a trial download of Corel Paintshop Pro X5 (note absence of the word "Photo" as well as different X number.
I think these are different products, X5 being more advanced. It hasn't helped to give me a preview of the X3 version which I am planning to buy.

Summary

Can you now give us a trial download of Corel Paintshop Photo X3?

"Great program that has grown a lot since I stared using"

September 05, 2011  |  By Don166S

 |  Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

Pros

A lot of power for a small price.

Cons

Some of the changes from previous versions have moved some features making them hard to find when first upgrading. Other features have be left out. I still have earlier versions installed to perform some tasks.

Summary

Since Corel purchased PSP from Jasc they have continued to make it a stronger competitor tp Photoshop while keeping the price down. As for downloading, the download is large. It is worth the price to order the retail box from Corel so you will have the disk (3) and user guide. If you get the ultimate version there are a ton of extras included.

"The most valuable graphics program I've ever used"

August 24, 2011  |  By iamerickson

 |  Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

Pros

It just works. I've got over 15 years graphic design experience, and I've yet to find a product that is as powerful and easy to use as this one. Is more feature rich and user friendly than any other program on the market.

Cons

X2 (and it sounds like X3) had a bug that caused crashes if it was installed on the same machine as a particular MS C++ DLL. I imagine that's the cause of the "crash" complaints of so many commenters below. Also, default layout is pretty useless.

Summary

I've been using Paint Shop Pro for nearly a decade and a half now (long before the Corel buyout). I work as a software/web developer, and part-time (semi-professional) multimedia artist. I've had to become proficient in Photoshop, simply because it's the tool that all the "professional" graphic designers use. But whenever I have to use the industry standard, I find myself endlessly frustrated by it's slow and clumsy UI, and the fact that features that just exist at the push of a button in Paint Shop Pro have to be done manually. Edits that take me 20 or 30 minutes in Photoshop can be done in five minutes in PSP. And in all my years of graphic design, I've yet to find a single person who can show me something in Photoshop that can't be done in PSP (and usually with less effort). In fact, at my last two employer's I've purchased this software out of pocket rather than use Photoshop when it's provided to me.

The only problem I've ever had with the app was in regards to crashes, and with some research, I discovered that it was due to an incompatibility with with a DLL that is part of the Microsoft C++ library, which I wasn't using anyway. Upon removing the offending file, the program works beautifully. However, I will concede that support from Corel on this issue could have been better, as I shouldn't have to disable certain functionality of my computer to use their product (if I were a C++ developer, I would simply be out of luck).

Another caveat I'll point out is that the default anti-aliasing in Photoshop is a bit smoother than in PSP for certain circumstances, but this is easily remedied with the excellent feathering options available.

Finally, it is also worth noting that while PSP is an excellent raster graphics tool, and can do quite a bit with vector graphics, it's not a replacement for illustrator.

With those few items noted, however, this is probably one of my favorite pieces of software in the world. It's fast, easy, powerful, and gets the job done. If you're a productivity minded designer on a tight deadline, a hobbyist who wants professional level power without spending three months learning an unnecessarily complex graphics program, or just a usability nut who can't stand unnecessarily difficult UIs, then this is the way to go. If you're a self-important graphic artist who needs to feel like you're part of an exclusive artist club, then stick with that industry standard program that costs 10 times as much and delivers a less rich user experience.

"Best Product for Money Spent"

August 12, 2011  |  By SmakarInPhoenix

 |  Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

Pros

Easy to use, full of features, there is NOTHING I cannot do with this product that can be done with other products costing, literally, 25 times more.

Cons

RAW file processing is not as efficient (slower) as some other products, but this certainly does not justify the cost of purchasing the faster products. Especially since the utilities that came with my camera can be used if needed.

Summary

I've been using PSP for 3 years now, and I simply LOVE this product. I've read complaints from others regarding technical issues, but personally I haven't encountered any. Also, the bundled products with the Ultimate version, especially Painter Essentials, have added a whole new artistic dimension to my photography hobby. I strongly recommend this product to anyone I run into who is interested in photography (unless they have money to burn).

"Agreed: ABOMINATION!"

August 08, 2011  |  By nadelaney

 |  Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

Pros

A couple of good image adjustment "easy" buttons - but so forgettable, I can't name them now...

Cons

Crashes.... continually. With nothing built in to save work.... I mean, if you know your program crashes and you can't fix it with a patch, at least pop in a recovery feature!!!! For heaven's sake! This feels like a Roxio program!

Summary

Totally agree with all that has been posted about crashes, lost work, etc. Two of the most aggravating things to me are the freakin "file manager" - like the other poster said: Corel apparently thinks we're too stupid to find our own files! So we're forced to lose computer resources to this piece of nonsense. Am also annoyed because Corel is perfectly capable of creating good photo editing software (I am still using PhotoPaint 11 - and find it almost perfect for my needs - I am an amateur and don't need much!) yet this publisher puts out this flawed program that is clearly un-fixable. Shame on them.

"An absolute abomination!!!"

August 01, 2011  |  By Astrog

 |  Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

Pros

Nothing to report here. This program is dreadful.

Cons

Won't install
Tech support is slow to respond and clueless.

Summary

I've spent at least 20 hours trying to install this pig on 64 bit Windows 7. My downloaded installer fails every time upon its insistence to install Microsoft c++ from an MSI file on CD1. I've extracted the MSI installers from every version of x32 and x64 c++, downloaded from the Microsoft site, I provided paths other than CD1 to each of these, and it rejects them all. One of them has to be what X3 demands, but none work. My guess is that unless the CD Disk1 requirement is met somehow, I could spend the rest of my life trying and never get this beast installed. Actually, I think it all works out for the best. Based on the misfortunes of users who did manage to install X3, I've gotten off lightly by only wasting 20 hours plus whatever time was wasted writing articulate ,detailed emails to tech support, only to get canned replies that were ridiculously off-topic and utterly useless. Thanks to this brief nightmare, I will never buy anything else from Corel. There are a number of less experienced users who solicit my advice, and I will use my influence to steer them clear of all Corel products. Releasing software this bad truly deserves punishment, and this comment is just the beginning of what I envision as a protracted spanking.

"Garbage from Corel"

June 28, 2011  |  By Nerd3D

 |  Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

Pros

It crashes better than any previous version.

Cons

Crash, Crash. Crash. Did I say it crashes a lot because that's pretty much the only feature. Takes upwards of an hour to install. Longer to uninstall. If you have lots of pictures, (Like an actual photographer) be prepared for a 4-6 hour wait. Really

Summary

There have been no useful features added since PSP9, the last JASC version so there is no reason to upgrade if you have that. Corel has only added bugs. How they can add so many bugs with so few actual changes is quite amazing.

The biggest and worse bug is one that will effect photographers that shoot large RAW images. PSP13 has a horrifying memory leak. When you open, edit and then save and close a picture the memory from that image is never freed. After 3 or 4 good sized images all the memory available to PSP will be consumed. It never fails that this bug presents it's self by failing to save. Corel has known of this bug since the initial release and here we are a year and 4 service packs later and it's still not fixed. Obviously Corel doesn't care or can't fix this show stopper bug.

Learn all about it here at Corel's own forums:
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=37784

The next big problem is the "Organizer". Corel decided you're too stupid to find your own pictures so they need to do it for you. Trouble is they're too stupid to find them too. They install an indexing service that runs all the time and that's the end of doing anything else with your computer. This indexer is so slow and so inefficient that you won't be able to use your computer for anything but a paper weight. It's is possible to turn it down with some registry hacks and some file system tricks but you can't get rid of it. Sit back and watch the hard drive light flicker for a few hours between emails. You probably think I'm exaggerating. After waiting an hour for the first launch you'll realize I wasn't

That's just 2 bugs... there are thousands more.

Anybody who gave this junk more than 1 star probably works for Corel or has never really used the program.

"Impossible"

June 22, 2011  |  By jsibelius

 |  Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

Pros

Very user friendly...

Cons

...when you can get it to work

Summary

I was impressed by this program when I had the opportunity to use it on a friend's computer. The interface was much easier to use and understand from a novice point of view, which as a long-time Adobe user, I can appreciate. HOWEVER, when I tried to download and activate it for myself, I couldn't make it work, no matter what I tried. Eventually, I told Corel where to stick it. Nothing should be this difficult, and certainly, my copy of Photoshop Elements is not. Adobe owns me, but when there are no viable competitors out there, that's the way it has to be.

"Great Program with ALLOT of Bugs"

June 21, 2011  |  By rdy2go909

 |  Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

Pros

This program is easy to use, does a great job editing and adjusting photos. A great program for the novice as well as the seasoned photographer but.....

Cons

This program is full of bugs. It is extremely slow, crashes continuously and overall frustrating. I have a fairly fast system with windows 7 so I can't speak about other operating systems other than Win 7.

Summary

If they get the bugs out this will be a fantastic fun program especially for the price but from what I have seen and looking at the other reviews it looks like Paint Shop X3 has some serious issues to fix first.

"Does not meet my basic user expectations"

June 07, 2011  |  By SonicFields

 |  Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

Pros

Great user interface with short learning curve. Covers most forms of editing required, Provides useful overview of file contents. Provides limited RAW file adjustment (but see below).

Cons

Edit buttons too small. Program crashes continuously. Edited RAW NEF files could not be saved.. Customer Support - what was that - I just saw a pink elephant fly over!

Summary

Program appears flawed, I have never had soo many crashes as with this particular software. In many ways the designers acknowledge this by their service pack issues, which are supposed to provide better stability - but in my opinion, as a user running Windows 7 (64 & 32), they have a long, long, long way to go!
This software does not meet my basic user expectations, so I have now decided to ditch it and spend a bit more money on buying Adobe Photoshop
