Despite a slightly annoying installation process, version X2 (read: 12) of Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo continues to offer the same high performance and full feature set of earlier editions. The digital image-editing program will fit the needs of many photographers and designers.

A well-designed and intuitive interface offers easy access to all of your digital images, and the individual components--such as tool selectors, palettes, and layer windows--can be dragged and dropped anywhere on the screen. Excellent one-click photo adjustments such as Smart Photo Fix or One Step Noise Removal will be godsends for photographers with busy schedules.

One of the most noticeable updates in X2 is the new graphite workspace theme, which gives the app a slick, 21st century look. A tabbed interface makes switching between photos a breeze, and the library organizer is available as either a palette tool or another tab in the image browser.

The organizer is one of the strongest features of Paint Shop Pro Photo, and a new Express Lab feature makes batch editing even easier. We did notice a CPU slowdown when using the organizer with large libraries, but otherwise the application was quite stable, even when editing very large BMP files. A new Learning Center provides contextual help for specific features, but we found searching the regular help topics to be more informative.

The installation is the most disappointing part of the trial. It requires registering for a free Corel account, which in turn requires a valid e-mail address. Adobe uses the same practice, but it's an annoying trend. You should also note that within the "Advanced" installation setting, Paint Shop Pro Photo is automatically set to become the default application for all your major image-file formats.

Once you get Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 installed and working on your machine, you'll find a very powerful photo editor and organizer that is quite easy to learn and use. A full 30-day trial gives you plenty of time to determine whether or not you'd like the full version.

"Corel products are deteriorating"

September 01, 2012  |  By bjohn913

 |  Version: Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate

Pros

The concept holds great promise of hope and change

Cons

Unfortunately, the ones who criticized this review are completely wrong. I've been a Corel user for decades. Their "new products" are so bad I would not support them either (I've managed several world-wide customer service departments). Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3 and Corel Photo 7 all suffer from mediacataloger.exe. This program will loop (use 25% of the cpu without returning a response to the request--old mainframe concept). I don't know what this program does but it sure messed me up over the last year. Both products became unusable until I discovered and renamed this failure to thrive.

Summary

I would not recommend any Corel product at all due to bugs, over active developers, and lack of support.

"Program made very cleanly and isn't overloaded!"

April 26, 2011  |  By YuriyBaranovskiy

 |  Version: Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate

Pros

Very functional and very easily customized. A very clean and beautiful program.

Cons

If an image and a window (histogram, adjustment etc.) are open at the same time, then you can only move the window.

Summary

Program is very clean and beautiful but you have to study it closely and be serious about it and only then will you see all the oppurtunities. To be able to understand this programs capabilities, then you need to use all the sources you can to also expand your imagination to work better. To be able to work with this program properly you need to be immersed in art, old painters, composition, color wheel, etc. But your best companion is your imagination.

Updated on Apr 26, 2011

To work with this program you need a good and fast computer. Everything depends on how fast your computer is.

"Oh Dear Gawd SO Slow! And Spyware? No free support"

June 18, 2009  |  By Ankhorite

 |  Version: Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate

Pros

Scale-on-the-fly thumbnails, very nice.
Graphite background is okay, but nothing to get excited about.

Cons

Grow old and die waiting for renames, moves, and deletions.
Some kind of memory leak in media cataloger eventually crashes my machine.
Tool icons "modernized" to be harder to see.
Spyware?
Support is A LIE.

Summary

These are my experiences with Paint Shop Pro X2, not PSP X2 Ultimate, but apparently the Ultimate version is about getting extra doodads, not a step forward on the software itself.

1. I didn't know about the spyware issue until reading the Sept 18 2008 review by MadLyb here, and now that I know, I don't like it. Is Corel swiping images off my drive as I work on them?

2. What I DO know is that any attempt to delete, move, or rename causes the program to panic, delay, flash me a plain white screen for several seconds to over a minute, and eventually throw my focus to any other program I am running when it finishes the requested action. Then I have to click back on the PSP X2 tab in my task bar to get back to what I was doing. This isn't thirty seconds... this is a couple of minutes or more. Unacceptable.

3. The rating-stars feature has a huge flaw. I can carefully rate a batch of, say, 100 photos with 1 to 5 stars. But if I am foolish enough to try to break them up into new directories, the star data vanishes, and I have to go rate them again. Extremely inconvenient.

4. There's some kind of memory flaw here, maybe in a process called Media Cataloger, which causes PSP X2 to take up more and more of my processor time as I work and eventually crashes my entire machine.

5. I am over 40. I was easily able to see the cartoonish icons for hte tools in the earlier Jasc versions. Corel "modernized" the workspace to graphite gray - nice, but not a big deal - and "modernized" the darned icons to be much fuzzier and harder to make out. STOP IT. Either go back, or give us the option of "Use old icon styles." I can't see what I'm doing without lunging forward to put my nose on the screen when selecting a tool and it makes me very cranky.

6. Corel doesn't support the product. If you send in even the simplest question, some goon or bot tells you that gosh, they don't know, but if you pay $$$$ to open a trouble case maybe then MAYBE someone will come up with an answer. That's not support. That's bait-and-switch.

"An Editors Dream"

October 27, 2008  |  By corelpsplover

 |  Version: Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate

Pros

This product gives you nearly everything you need for a nice edit. Makeover tools, effects, adjustments, beams, text and brushes and more. I love it and the graphics are great when you save it right. Amazing

Cons

The only downfalls of PSP X2 Ultimate is the text. The text tool always goes a bit funny and only show the outline. The sizes dont work either. I would also get a multicoloured text tool like in fireworks.

Summary

All in all this product is a very proffesional and useful one. Better than photoshop in my opinion and easier to use. You can create almost anything and anyone can use it. The instructions aren't all that great so you may need to mess around with it or youtube it before you become a wizz. You will enjoy it, but deffinalty download it before buying... just incase it isn't your cuppa tea

"Spend time with it and grows on you fast"

October 22, 2008  |  By ctrue

 |  Version: Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate

Pros

Good tools to edit, enhance and restore photos. MediaOne helpful to organize, search and typical fixes for photos. (comes with paid version)

Cons

If a previous user of the Jasc it will be frustrating to become accustom to the new interface. Missing the Jasc Animation application. Terminology much different from Photoshop.

Summary

I have been able to . Tools I find useful are One Step Photo Fix, Smart Photo Fix, One Step Noise Removal, Digital Camera Noise Removal, Red Eye Removal, Object Remover, Color Changer, Makeover (Blemish removal, sun tan, teeth whitening), Fade Correction, Scratch Remover and many more. I have been working on thousands of scanned photos and Paint Shop Pro has been priceless. I had to rotate and despeckle over 1000 photos and was able to use the Batch Process option to select all of these files and have it open, fix and save all of them with out me having to interact! MediaOne is a great tool for quick common fixes and to add Tag to be able to search for a person, place, event and so on.

"jasc paintshop pro was easier to use"

September 24, 2008  |  By paintpro1

 |  Version: Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate

Pros

it has some advanced features

Cons

Having used jasc paint shop pro,I was disapointed, there is no animation shop, Photo X2 is frustrating to use. So much promise and so much disapointment, then the license agreement whereby Corel uses 'spyare' to monitor useage of their product!

"Still has Spyware"

September 18, 2008  |  By MadLyb

 |  Version: Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate

Pros

Great product that I *had* used forever until Corel loaded with Spyware

Cons

Spyware.

They log all actions in the application and even share with third parties and you have to consent to this to use the application.

Why doesn't CNET flag this?

I'll let the EULA speak for itself.

"Not for Me"

September 17, 2008  |  By john3347

 |  Version: Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate

Pros

Found none

Cons

I found this application impossible to figure out. It seemed to try to overtake mu entire computer and I could not configure it to "sit down and shut up" until I called for it to do something. Had an extremely "busy" and confusing GUI. JUNK!

Summary

Nothing, at any price, compares with Faststone Image Viewer for "family photo" management. I have not found anything that even comes close.
