Comodo Firewall Pro provides a smorgasbord of information and options for advanced users, simple enough for beginners, and yet runs smoothly and silently in the background.
It's labeled Pro but this Comodo offers up a dragon's treasure of features for free. Running mostly hidden, Comodo rears its head most often during Security Alerts that ask about new Internet connections. Alerts contain basic outgoing connection information. The user must determine if it's safe. The connections monitor displays the Application, the Source IP and Port, the Destination IP and Port, and the number of bytes received and sent.
Overall, the features offered are not only comprehensive, but they're useful. So not only is there a Network Monitor, but it displays its rules clear enough for even the greenest security wonk to Google up the relevant terms. Whether you're in the Activity tab, the Security tab or viewing the Summary, which displays Security Monitoring, your current Security Level and useful system information such as your IP address and your MAC address, the program has been geared at all levels to help you understand where your 1's and 0's are going, and which programs are sending them.
Currently incompatible with Vista, Comodo also requires a reboot before using. Other than that, keep in mind that Comodo is freeware and it's hard to reason against using it.

Version: Comodo Personal Firewall 2
Pros: Version 2 unlike Version 1 has many improvements, I admit Version 1 had many flaws but Version 2 is great, it allows you to block IP of people you don't want connecting to your computer (could come in handy if you use P2P) and has a great program monitor, when you first install it you will get lots of pop-ups from the firewall but this is because it needs to learn your sysyem after a few days the popups will be minimal, also they have released a free antivirus product, Comodo Antivirus and there old one Trustix antivirus is being discontinued, so if you like the Comodo Firewall please try the Antivirus it is great, and Comodo is also working on a free antispyware product.
Cons: NONE!

Version: Comodo Personal Firewall 2
"The best firewall - free or pay"
Pros: Comodo has the power of a rules-based firewall with the simplicity of an application based firewall.
Has excellent HIPS protection built-in.
Cons: A little heavy on resources - about the same as ZoneAlarm Pro.

Version: Comodo Personal Firewall 2
"Comodo Firewall, Best of the Breed"
Pros: Comodo Firewall works with Thunderbird and allows you to teach it which components should be allowed to access the internet. It does this more efficiently than other firewalls.
-----
Leave the Component Monitor on "Learning". When you launch them, some applications will immediately try to access the internet. If you started them, give them the OK after checking the box to let the firewall remember that. Sometimes you need to make more than one pass to get everything to work because some components have timeouts that cause them to die while they're waiting for you to give their parents the go-ahead. Run through all your favorite applications while on-line after installing Comodo firewall. Keep restarting the applications until Comodo firewall's inquiries quit asking.
-----
Other firewalls seem to be configured for Microsoft-dedicated OEM installations making it difficult (or not feasible) to migrate to more secure Open Source applications such as Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox. This rather defeats the purpose of security improvements brought by a firewall. It also makes them time-consuming and frustrating to use.
-----
Other firewalls force you to manually add components to a database while not knowing exactly which components are being halted by them. That is a big design flaw, something that big corporations (and you know who they are) seem to specialize in and charge you big bucks for.
-----
Comodo Firewall is a free download. Of course, I'm already a customer because I pay to use their reasonably priced SSL certificate service on other stuff.
Cons: Like many other desktop applications, there are some display flubs that would only be noticed by feral programmers who like to use a black background but at least these don't permeate the application throughout all dialog boxes, only a few.
