Comodo has merged its antivirus program with Firewall Pro, creating a free security program that aims to be more to more people. Although this may frustrate some users who want only one program or the other, the installer does let you opt out of either of the components. Users are also asked to install the Comodo SafeSearch and Ask.com toolbars, so be careful if you tend to install on autopilot. CIS requires a reboot.

Resource management is better than before, with hogging all but eliminated. It provides a smorgasbord of information and options for advanced users, but it's simple enough for beginners, and runs smoothly and silently in the background. The version 3 interface utilizes a plain white color scheme and replaces old terminology with more intuitive terms such as Summary, Firewall, Defense, and Miscellaneous. In each, there are links to relevant security issues so users can drill down to learn more about how the firewall is performing. The firewall rears its head most often when Security Alerts ask about new Internet connections as the program "learns" your computer's behavior.

Shield-shaped buttons at the top facilitate switching between the antivirus and firewall modules, as well as a summary tab that provides a general overview. Users can toggle automatic scans of archives or downloads, scans on start-up, manage the quarantine, and schedule scans and definition file updates through a clean and comprehensible list of links. The definition file update crashed during its first use, but was stable thereafter. Scans completed at a reasonable speed, but were not blazingly fast.

A third pane, Defense+, provides more-advanced security options including locking down specific files from modification, perusing an active processes list, and protecting specific Registry keys. Comodo Internet Security's wide range of free services are generally good, but the firewall is clearly the strongest of the bunch.

"Worked but how well?"

March 02, 2010  |  By Chefkey

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security 3.13.126709.581

Pros

It ran I guess? I mean it didn't have any glitches so that was good.

Cons

It just seemed ineffective somehow. I feel like I have protection when I am using Avast or AVG. I currently use Avast 5 and it blocks well.

Summary

As long as other companies live Avast exist it will be tough for new companies like Comodo to break through.

"Free firewall and anti-virus"

February 28, 2010  |  By scifibuff

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security 3.13.126709.581

Pros

Dependable firewall. I feel much safer being connected to the Internet with Comodo Firewall protecting my system.

Cons

Beware of false positives when using this product. Constant warnings and confirmation requests slow down installations.

Summary

If you surf the Internet and want an alternative to AVG, you might try Comodo. It's free firewall and anti-virus are dependable, but not perfect. They offer decent protection at no cost to the consumer and you are alerted to updates as they become available.

"Best free firewall out there, anti-virus is decent"

February 20, 2010  |  By kzahid06

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security 3.13.126709.581

Pros

The firewall is the best free firewall available.
You can choose whether you want the firewall/anti-virus protection, or both.

Cons

None that I noticed.

Summary

Must-have free firewall for your PC, and anti-virus protection is good, but not the best.

"A package of peaks and valleys."

February 19, 2010  |  By AreciboStraylight

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security 3.13.126709.581

Pros

- Robust suite of software
- Excellent firewall, good heuristics and HIPS
- Relatively quick on-demand scan
- Has made significant progress in a short period of time, and next version (v4.0) shows great promise
- No annoying advertising

Cons

- Average (at best) on-demand AV scanner
- Awkward/unpolished UI
- Very few formal tests of AV components and no apparent will be developers to rectifiy this
- Pop-ups are puzzling and annoying for average user
- Seems to forget settings at times

Summary

Comodo Internet Security is based in the right mindset - to proactively protect your computer from zero-day malware, rather than tilting more toward a signature-based approach. Though it's been the trend for a little while to try to focus less on specific signatures for each variant and instead use heuristics and HIPS, Comodo goes a step beyond most free packages and combines a good anti-malware component (formerly BOClean) and excellent (if noisy) firewall to the mix. A good, integrated defense-in-depth solution is hard to find in the free domain, and I'm glad to see this fits the bill in one package.

However, for all of these layers of protection, quality independent information about each component seems to be sparse. With the handful of fairly recent information ranging from fairly impressive informal tests by end-users to pretty poor reviews (even if they are Russian), more needs to be done to help prove Comodo's real-world capabilities. Though I understand Comodo's desire to wait for more accurate testing procedures as their approach doesn't translate well to the current archaic testing regimen, they need to mobilize some sort of third-party organizations to test the capabilities of these components in earnest before it can really be trusted.

This, combined with the awful and cheap-looking interface (version 4 is as much a sidestep as it is a step forward) and flood of poorly-worded informational pop-ups, does make me often wish that Avira Antivir wasn't ad-supported. However, with v4 just around the corner and the promise of a much-improved AV component, sandbox, and fewer confusing allow/deny moments for newbies, makes it worth sticking with to see if they can follow through, because if they do, they will have an unstoppable package on their hands.

"I guess it's alright...."

February 13, 2010  |  By franglais--2008

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security 3.13.126709.581

Pros

It's free, that's always nice. I guess the secure DNS thing is good to use, right? Loads much quicker than Kaspersky Internet Security. They say its firewall is pretty good, and that's all I really care about.

Cons

The interface of Comoda throws me off. Maybe because I'm using their secure DNS, but I can't communicate with my wireless Canon printer. I need to exit Comodo in order to print.

Summary

I finally uninstalled and reinstalled it to be able to give up their secure DNS; I couldn't find how do it on their forums or anywhere. Sure, I's is stupid. I'll nip that in the bud right there.
Now that I'm just using my "normal" DNS, the printer is communicating again, and everything is fine.

"Free version firewall: fine on XP, not on Vista"

February 12, 2010  |  By mcc99

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security 3.13.126709.581

Pros

When I got it to work, it was fast and intuitive. See bottom line summary for details.

Cons

See bottom line summary.

Summary

Installed and ran fine on XP SP 3 at work, however it does not play well with other firewalls. Our company is using SonicWall and I got frozen starts until I logged in under a local admin acct. Then, it was fine. It acted as the PC's firewall while still connecting to the Internet, but I had to be logged in so that I no longer was in the company domain. That was my XP experience.

Back home I decided to try it on my Vista Home edition laptop. I uninstalled PC Tools FW Plus and installed this one. Frozen start up ("Welcome" wheel and nothing for > 5 mins.) with no domain other than the default WORKGROUP is on my machine

I booted into Safe Mode and disabled the COMODO service in the Services panel. I then tried starting up again in Normal Mode and got the same frozen start at "Welcome". I booted again into Safe Mode and uninstalled the Comodo Firewall. (Thankfully Vista allows this; in XP, you cannot uninstall apps in Safe Mode.) Anyway, I then rebooted into Normal Mode and "I got my laptop back" as one might say. I then reinstalled PC Tools FW Plus and I was back to my usual uses for the machine.

Others may have had different experiences, but this one was mine.
