Comodo has merged its antivirus program with Firewall Pro, creating a free security program that aims to be more to more people. Although this may frustrate some users who want only one program or the other, the installer does let you opt out of either of the components. Users are also asked to install the Comodo SafeSearch and Ask.com toolbars, so be careful if you tend to install on autopilot. CIS requires a reboot.

Resource management is better than before, with hogging all but eliminated. It provides a smorgasbord of information and options for advanced users, but it's simple enough for beginners, and runs smoothly and silently in the background. The version 3 interface utilizes a plain white color scheme and replaces old terminology with more intuitive terms such as Summary, Firewall, Defense, and Miscellaneous. In each, there are links to relevant security issues so users can drill down to learn more about how the firewall is performing. The firewall rears its head most often when Security Alerts ask about new Internet connections as the program "learns" your computer's behavior.

Shield-shaped buttons at the top facilitate switching between the antivirus and firewall modules, as well as a summary tab that provides a general overview. Users can toggle automatic scans of archives or downloads, scans on start-up, manage the quarantine, and schedule scans and definition file updates through a clean and comprehensible list of links. The definition file update crashed during its first use, but was stable thereafter. Scans completed at a reasonable speed, but were not blazingly fast.

A third pane, Defense+, provides more-advanced security options including locking down specific files from modification, perusing an active processes list, and protecting specific Registry keys. Comodo Internet Security's wide range of free services are generally good, but the firewall is clearly the strongest of the bunch.

    "Overzealous, will destroy installs..."

    July 21, 2014   |   By zarzarbeast

    Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

    Pros

Not sure, maybe its worthwhile to have a security program this hardcore.

    Cons

    Destroys installations of other programs.
The program constantly blocks installations of other programs as well as processes spawned from those programs or program installations. Long story short. You may have to disable the program to install other programs. I'm pretty sure this defeats the purpose of the program. But its free so what do you expect.

"It does require IT knowledge to set it up properly"

    June 25, 2014   |   By ITHelp4321

    Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

    Pros

The most powerful if you spend time customizing it. Firewall is the best.

    Cons

Don't use this antivirus or custom settings, pro active protection etc. Start with training mode and then move to safe mode.

    Summary

The best firewall, HIPS and proactive protection if you don't use out of the box settings. Use custom installation and Untick the option for Priv Dog, Geek buddy etc or your computer will be taken ower and start up will be very slow and it could cause Blue screen of death or your computer to freeze.

"In spite of glowing reviews this product worries me"

    June 07, 2014   |   By johnj2010

    Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

    Pros

Installation easy, and unwanted add-ons seem to have removed easily too. Quick scan was fast, compared to other products I have tried. It found one threat on first pass, which Malwarebytes and Hitman were unable to see, but was it real? Full scan delivered 8 more new threats, none of which showed under Windows essentials or Malwarebytes. So it looks very thorough, and cleaned without hitches.

    Cons

After install Chrome was noticeably slower and CPU usage significantly higher with just Chrome and Comodo idling (compared to Windows Security Essentials.
Anything found opens a "GeekBuddy" screen offering to connect to an expert who will assist in removing the malware.
No on-screen advice on whether 'Clean' is sufficient.
The software inserts small ads occasionally, and Comodo offer paid-for products, but that seems a very optimistic business model.
The GeekBuddy chat/phone immediately asks for remote access to the PC, and can't advise unless this is done. Others have remarked that unknown amounts of programs are then installed.
Cleaning removes the files. There is no warning that cleaning a suspect email attachment results in the deletion of the entire email folder.
Information on the location and nature of suspect files is scant, cannot be copied and pasted, and there is no indication of severity.

    Summary

Two of my supposed malware items were files in recently installed ware from trusted suppliers (HP and Keil), the rest being email attachments, so I suspect false alerts. The response seems to be aimed at getting the user to phone GeekBuddy and allow remote access, no matter what the nature of the alert, so perhaps they are not too worried about false alerts. I did not proceed with that, so am not aware whether GeekBuddy in some way asks for payment for the service, or whether the cost is in having additional products installed on the computer, some of which may not be free.
Several PC magazines and sites have approved this product as highly effective, so maybe I'm just paranoid - or maybe the company name has unfortunate connotations. (The C(K)omodo dragon feeds by biting its prey from concealment, thus infecting it with venom and pathogens from its saliva, then waits for it to die before consuming the corpse.) Its behaviour reminds me too much of ScareWare tactics often used to persuade users to connect to or download suspect services.
If it quacks like a duck..............
    TANSTAAFL.

"MINUS 12 STARS FOR GEEK HACKING"

    June 05, 2014   |   By lmilz

    Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

    Pros

    None I could see.

    Cons

DL'd the program & followed prompt saying 'techs' would help me configure the software. Called, & tech wanted permission to remote access the PC, which I very hesitantly gave him only because of the Comodo name. I specifically told him I wanted to see everything he was doing. Instead he went through whatever he did so fast I couldn't even tell what he did. Then spent nearly an hour while he harangued me to buy Geekbuddy junk. Finally got him off the phone, only to see (later) my entire PC tied up by Comodo without my having accessed or run it as yet. It completely disabled everything; almost never got the thing to shut down. Did the Geekbuddy 'tech' come back & meddle on my machine so I'd think I had issues that I HAD TO HAVE their service to fix? Can't think of anything else, since Comodo was not in use, but task manager showed the PC was being accessed through the Comodo stuff on the PC. Uninstalled, and would advise Comodo to drop the friendship with their new 'buddies' ASAP.

    Summary

Had the feeling on the phone that this was a scam and the guy talking a scammer, but trusted the Comodo name. Uninstalled everything and will not make the mistake of trusting Comodo again. If they don't think enough of their own reputation to vet their partners any better than this, then there's no reason why I should waste my time on their stuff, which, as far as I'm concerned, is nothing but JUNK. DON'T USE THIS GARBAGE.

    Updated on Jun 5, 2014

This PC is new, and the Comodo install was about the only thing on it at the point this happened, so I'm very sure this was not virus or malware related. I already had Avast and Malwarebytes, but thought I would try out Comodo to see if I liked it better on the new system. I'll stick with both my old standbys and Comodo can kiss my aasci goodbye. NEVER AGAIN! And I won't be granting remote access to ANY company EVER AGAIN, no matter how much I think the name can be trusted.

    Updated on Jun 25, 2014

Addition: I have screenshots of the task manager tie-up. I forgot to add this in the original review. I've thought about contacting Comodo, but they only have an email contact, with no customer service link I could find--not a good thing in my own experience online. They don't even provide a direct link by which you can make a complaint or rave comment or contact them unless you have an email program set up--which many users don't have a clue how to do.

In my own experience, companies that do this are pretty much fly-by-night . The present stats on this company don't tell us if the company was sold recently to people less scrupulous--which would be my own take on things.

This is very amateurish for a company that has been in business as long as Comodo. One other thing my review did not mention because I was so thoroughly disgusted at the time, is that I had used Comodo Dragon browser for quite a few years. Needless to say, it is off my system now, along with all Comodo stuff.

"Comodo is the best, read eula and custom installation"

    May 22, 2014   |   By noadsCNET

    Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

    Pros

The best out there if you don't install by default. Most people don't read eula and just click next next next and then cry like babies that they have ended up with ton of rubbish. Once the software is installed use advanced settings to untick ads, notifications, and pop up frequency other annoying things.

    Cons

For lazy people is too powerful, they just click yes to everything and then their system is overloaded with pop ups.

    Summary

The best in the world if you are willing to customize it and find out how to configure it. It all takes just a few minutes.

"very good free AV , and works ."

    April 30, 2014   |   By salesalex

    Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

    Pros

quick scan , doesn't slow the system , guaranteed non-virus computer, good firewall , decent sandbox .

    Cons

it's firewall cannot block IExplorer , and there is no 'restore defaults' button so if you mess too much with it's settings you have to unistall + CCleaner (or glary utilities) + reboot and reinstall.

    Summary

for a free antivirus COMODO ICS is great , I have tried many free antiviruses but COMODO actually works - just uncheck everything while installing .

    "AVG on steroids"

    April 28, 2014   |   By taylor1277

    Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

    Pros

There are none at all.if people tell you this is a great problem they are lying to you.they most likely are pumping it up for profits

    Cons

OMG Holy Crap that is what gets installed on your system, from virtual desktop.to privdog or whatever they call it.it will reak havoc on your system.and is so full of crapware it bogs your computer down so much it feels like it weighs a 100#.don't take my word, download it and you will see, also its free or is it really.if you need help with something, because now that you downloaded it and nothing on your system seems to work, welcome to Geekbuddy.they outsourced their tech help to this Geekbuddy, all they want is for you to pick up the phone for the free price of 59.99 or use remote assistance so they can add a few things to your system.and when your on the chat window don't ask for any help they won't give it,until they get into your system or your wallet.

    Summary

i went back to using unthreat, which the only fault with this company is you might have to uninstall and reinstall it every thirty days,to me that is like a new fresh reinstall.i will never use this again Comodo which you never hear bad about, and is one of the top players just went on a cruise with the folks over at AVG

    "A heavy-weight in security features."

    April 20, 2014   |   By eezee_cnet

    Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

    Pros

With it's newest installment, Comodo delivered a swiss army knife. It sure got some tools for you, if you want to use them. A Virtual Machine, website scanning, sandboxing, a firewall, HIPS (guess a firewall should be considered a HIPS, but whatever) and... A widget.

They freshed up the GUI. It's simple and somewhat effective.

Great performance, overall. And that's very impressive, considering.

    Cons

    - Widget is just clutter.
    - PrivDog. Which blocks all other add services and replaces it with it's own adds. Yeah... No. Free apps and advertising is nothing new, so I can understand the decision to include this in the package. I can understand myself for not installing/using it.
    - The simpler GUI makes it even harder to adjust the components it has. Once you've figured out how to get to the core of settings, be prepared for some major settings galore. And it's still not userfriendly in easy blocking or whitelisting programs by hand.
    - Comodo wants to be too much. For me, I just want a personal firewall, as a small part of an extra defense line. I got everything else covered via other programs and methods. So, if one program got compromised or stopped working, for whatever reason, most of the other lines of defenses are still up and running. Spread the risk, so to speak.

    Summary

It's got everything you want or need and then some. Question is, is that really what you want? My answer is: No.

"Like Virtual Machine If OS Version Doesn't Support VM."

    April 12, 2014   |   By Grafik-Werk

    Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

    Pros

Some Windows versions, like Windows 7 Home Premium, don't have a group policy editor (for tweaking security beyond firewall) or an ability to support virtual machine (VM) or an ability to use Comodo CIS-type sandbox; this version of Comodo CIS improves things for such OS, and when running ANY browsers in the virtual kiosk it's as if there were a VM/sandbox running...good news for smaller OS. If you don't like Comodo AV as resident antivirus, use one you like and either install just Comodo Firewall and Defense+ (and PrivDog against web ads if you like, it's now offered at install), or choose what Comodo products you want running after installing. New users would do well to read Comodo's user manual.

    Cons

This version offers a few GUI themes under configuration setting menu for "Themes"; for some reason, only the "Classic" theme seems to give access to a few features enjoyed in prior version. The free version can't be repaired, so if on rare occasion it has incurable errors you have to clean uninstall/reinstall. I found on Windows 7 Home Premium increasing the OS pagefile to 1.5X installed RAM cured random BSOD due to Comodo drivers. That's it for cons.

    Summary

No one protection actually protects against EVERY possible thing by itself, but Comodo CIS 7 sure does guard against a heck of a lot! I found that even if my router/modem had ports compromised to respond "closed" rather than "stealthed", Comodo CIS was still reporting PC devices as all ports stealthed...giving impression to hackers no device beyond router/modem existed. Again, this is a great suite for ANY, and especially smaller, Windows OS.
