Comodo Firewall Pro gets a major revision from its publisher, upgrading to Version 3 with some significant changes. Most importantly, user complaints about resource hogging when Version 2 came out have been all but eradicated with the new model.
The program still provides a smorgasbord of information and options for advanced users, but it's simple enough for beginners, and runs smoothly and silently in the background. The most obvious new features include support for Windows Vista at the expense of Windows 2000 support, although the older v2.4 with Windows 2000 support is still available.
The other big change is the new interface. This new UI isn't exactly an improvement on the old one. However, the blue color scheme has been toned down in favor of basic white, and there's more empty space between the various options. Old terminology has been replaced with more intuitive terms. The new main tabs are Summary, Firewall, Defense , and Miscellaneous. In each, though, there are links to relevant security issues so users can drill down to learn more about how the firewall is performing.
There's a new feature called the Host Intrusion Prevention System that supposedly protects against unknown threats. Obviously, it's hard to tell if it works unless an unknown threat gets in, but it didn't seem to affect system performance negatively. Mostly, Comodo rears its head most often soon after installation when Security Alerts ask about new Internet connections as the program "learns" your computer's behavior.
Don't be fooled by the name, either. Comodo is labeled Pro but it offers up its dragon-sized treasure of features for free.

Pros: it's free and it's feature packed.
Cons: Too many features and altogether too much defensive activity. Slows down my work process with constant warnings. Uninstalled it but could not delete its residual files and folders via Vista. Had to delete through DOS prompt. Had to do System restore.
Summary: I'd recommend this program for really paranoid users and those who don't mind the constant interaction with this program. As a general user I can't recommend this program at all.

Pros: Can totally personalise every application running on your system. Can modify and change privileges etc. Works a treat. Fully recommend.

Summary: They should ban morons on CNET from writing rubbish reviews about programs and spoiling it for others. If they actually used their brains they would figure out how simple this and others are to use. Annoys me when a good program gets slated!!!

"A firewall which I can trust"
Pros: easy installation on my Vista 32bit OS; cooperates perfectly w/ my other protection tools (avast vir-scan, malwarebytes spy-scan, winpatrol); resource friendly; very informative off line and on line; awesome forum where all my concerns are handled
Cons: some of the pop up info messages are hard to understand and are missing links to do further steps; missing right click options to take further actions for many of those info pop ups
Summary: so far that firewall does what I expect; it shows exactly what's going on with in my own local network as well as behind the firewall coming from the cyberspace. I didn't recognize any performance losses and the best so far I feel save. I also like ... read more >>

Pros: None that I could see. Avast brought to my attention anything that needed looking at.
Cons: Can't see what it does. Doesn't advise you of anything.
