The Cole2k Media Standard Codec Pack is an easy way to install all main stream codecs to play movie and music files downloaded from the web or ripped from original sources. Installation is made easy with an easy install option and the most functional setting are automatically applied. Under Windows 7 and Vista popular file types are set to play in Windows Media Player, although the codecs will work in every player. Codecs for encoding and editing are included in the pack with settings automatically applied to suit most encoding, ripping and editing applications.The codec pack works with both 32bit and 64bit version of Microsoft Windows. Files supported include .mkv .mka (Matroska) .avi .bdmv .evo .mp4 .m4v .m4a .flv .webm .ogm .ogg .ts .ps .ac3 (Dolby Digital) .dts (Digital Theater Surround) .flac .ape (Monkey Audio) .aac .ofr (OptimFrog) .mpc (Musepack) .wv (WavPack) and many more Compression types supported include 10bit x264 (Hi10p), x264, h264, AVC, DivX, XviD, MJPEG (Morgan JPEG) MPEG4 and many more. As an optional extra Windows 7 and Vista users can try AnyDVD HD, which allows playback of protected BluRay's, DVD's, and CD's. If selected, the codec pack will also set BluRay and AVCHD discs to automatically play in Windows Media Player.

I've used some of the bigger packs around but picked this for a netbook because it's smaller.
I'm using win7 and it associated all file types I could think of.Cons

Adds MPEG-2 codec (amongst others: xVid, DivX, and camcorder formats) to the computer, which will then allow for DVD playback et al. Assumes you have a WDDM graphics card (IF using Windows Vista or 7); not just XDDM, as in "X"P Device Driver Model.

two toolbars get loaded (unless you choose the expert install and uncheck those boxes)

Just talking about Windows Vista and 7, make sure you are NOT using a "XDDM" driver for your graphics card; otherwise, this won't work (i.e. didn't work for me, but noticed that I had an old 64MB nVidia GeForce2 MX card that was labeled "XDDM" in the device manager (of Vista)--switched to a 32MB ATI Rage 128 Ultra (without "XDDM"), but still no good (but that's an even older card):
thinking best to stay with XP or get a newer graphics card (perhaps check nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx and make sure your card isn't in the "legacy" catagory; or, check ati.amd.com/support/driver.HTML and make sure there is a Vista/7 driver or that it's not listed as "legacy" under XP). -

I couldn't play an mpg file on my Vista Windows Media Player v11, and now I can. That was all I was after. Just don't install the dealio crap and life seems to be good.(so far).
