ChoiceMail Free

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET Staff on November 08, 2008

Using a challenge/response system, this program effectively blocks spam from your e-mail account and offers extras, which makes it a great option among the many spam blockers available. ChoiceMail blocks spam by sending a reply e-mail to any new senders, asking them to verify their identities. Because spammers won't go through this process, ChoiceMail won't forward any spam to you. The program builds whitelists and blacklists out of identity confirmations and lets you customize those lists. Some of your correspondents may not like the extra step of confirming their identities, but they will only have to do it once. In addition to these strict guidelines, you can create keywords that ChoiceMail will look for before sending e-mail on to you. ChoiceMail also comes with an extensive set of rules for blocking e-mail, such as common keywords and other obvious spam traits (such as using certain types of HTML). We particularly like being able to pick and choose the rules we want to apply because it lets us set a precise level of protection. ChoiceMail cannot be used by Outlook users who are on Microsoft Exchange Server unless it supports POP3 accounts. In spite of that, ChoiceMail does a great job of blocking unwanted spam, although you will have to get your correspondents to take an extra step before they can e-mail you.

    "Fair - bad support"

    November 27, 2007  |   By johnnyrcp

    Version: ChoiceMail Free 3.1

    Pros

    Does what they claim

    Cons

every now and then there is a error and the program re-installs from a base level and you loose everything you have blocked and you start over PS When upgrading, support is absolutly crap and takes days for resolution without any phone support or real help - your on your own with this bad boy..... freeware is fine, DO NOT BUY THE UPGRADE and get ripped....

    Peace out.

    "Downloading this was a mistake!"

    November 13, 2007  |   By parrotheadrick

    Version: ChoiceMail Free 3.1

    Pros

Free version worked as promised with no problems.

    Cons

I just upgraded to the PAID version. I am running Vista. Choice Mail PAID version is slow and sluggish at best. I have discovered that after having issues with the software that Tech Support is next to impossible to reach. I have requested Tech Support via email and via their web site. No response. It would appear that I am now stuck with a $30.00 piece of slow, sluggish software that has no support from the company that sells it. My advice: stick to the free version.

    "Incorrect Information"

    October 21, 2007  |   By davidslee63

    Version: ChoiceMail Free 3.1

    Cons

When it states "No Limitations" this is incorrect. It will only allow one pop3 email address unless you upgrade to the Pro edition.

    "Do not try ChoiceMail"

    October 6, 2007  |   By rick400tec

    Version: ChoiceMail Free 3.1

    Cons

The wizard fails to install most of the time and even after it would fail to download email. Web support has never covered any of dozen errors and problems I had. Trying to get technical support from that company after purchasing ChoiceMail was the worst. They would rather tell you a stated feature doesn't exist rather then support it. Email support for a critical (to me) application is not acceptable, it takes weeks to have a conversation when each question or statement takes 2 to 3 days round trip, mean while email is down and stacking up.

    "Absolute Rubbish"

September 20, 2007  |   By Leonard Van Onselen

    Version: ChoiceMail Free 3.1

    Pros

    Nothing

    Cons

    No support at all.

We tried it on two computers:

Computer 1. Choicemail changed my email settings, so that I could not reply to any mail that I had originated, and then received a reply to. My computer was disconnected from the internet, every time I tried to reply to a mail. The computer would not even shut down, I could only reboot by switching off. My email port was changed by the choicemail program from port 25 to port 30. I had to manually figure this out and change it back after removing the choice mail software from my computer. Lucky I had my mail settings on another machine to copy from.

Computer 2: As well as the above problems being repeated on computer 2. Choicemail also chose to corrupt the outlook.pst file, rendering outlook totally useless, as no email could be sent or received.I had to repair outlook using an outlook utility which luckily worked.

    Summary:

Rather live with the spam, than without email. It is unlikely that rebooting your computer for each email you wish to send, is ging to be a likely scenario that you would want to find yourself in.

Please guys, I am also a software developer, and I would not release a product like this into the market, it may be free but its a cheek to expect the general public to beta test your products.

YOU GET wHAT YOU PAY FOR _ IN THIS CASE NOTHING!

"Choice Mail Free 3.1 has a problem that I can't solve. It will not start."

    August 5, 2007  |   By CHARLES WESTBROOK

    Version: ChoiceMail Free 3.1

    Pros

I like the filtering of spaam, and notification to senders.

    Cons

I don't like the fact that after a week or so the program no longer runs, even after I removed Mcalfie Site rating prog. I have down loaded with my setting in place ( after deleting the old program.) I have disabled system guard, ect. It is approved by my firewall, and it won;t start. WHAT I DON'T LIKE IS THAT IN ORDER TO GET OUT LOOK EXPRESS TO WORK AGAIN, I AM GOING TO HAVE TO DELETE THE PROGRAM SETTING AND ALL. IT MAKES ME GLAD I DID NOT BUY THE UPGRADE,.
