If backing up your folders is one of those good ideas you never get around to, Carbonite Online PC Backup might just be the program for you. Carbonite tales the effort out of your contingency plan with software that automatically backs up your selected data and stores it, encrypted, on online servers. The format and services are useful and intuitive. An entertaining video tutorial explains your options for selecting and deselecting individual files or folders to back up. You can set your preferences to auto-backup your data each time you change it, or run back-ups manually. You can permanently exclude some data from being saved, and quickly recover files from your online holdings. Carbonite has an unobtrusive color-coded system for communicating the status of your file back-ups, so you can determine you status at a glance. For instance, a green dot by the folder on your desktop signals a successful online back-up.

Some downsides we encountered were the high CPU usage (the program suggests two methods for reducing its bandwidth) and the long initial back-up, which is also given due warning. It is likely that the initial back-up will take significantly longer for users whose corporate computers log them out when they idle than for home users whose back-up will continue to run while the user is away. The download itself is lengthy and requires you to disrupt your session with a reboot. New users are also required to register an e-mail address. Despite these minor set-backs, Carbonite Online PC Backup is a worthy investment of time and money, particularly for users who want a hands-off solution to backing up their data and those wary of losing or accumulating too many physical back-ups.

"No support...and no backup"

September 24, 2008  |  By bagnap

 |  Version: Carbonite Online PC Backup 2.0.193

Pros

Easy to install, but it doesnt work and they don't care.

Cons

My backup got stuck at 50% ( not big, total size 14GB - they claim to be able to do 2.5gb per day) for 3-5 months. I emailed them at least 4 times, with no result.

Summary

I'm asking for my money back.

"The "go to" software for backup"

September 08, 2008  |  By penn65000

 |  Version: Carbonite Online PC Backup 2.0.193

Pros

Simplicity, elegance, solidity. Works properly with XP. Keeps chugging after forced shutdown of PC. Good feature set without being cumbersome. Seems to work more smoothly than Mozy (which I also tried).

Cons

Initial backup is fairly slow, but that is acceptable. Can't back up networked drives or USB drives -- not sure it makes sense (any longer) to distinguish between internal and external storage.

Summary

Simple, professional-caliber backup software. I haven't tried restore yet.

"Suffering from hibernation sickness"

July 13, 2008  |  By julianlawson

 |  Version: Carbonite Online PC Backup 2.0.193

Pros

Nice user interface

Cons

Carbonite started off well, but after completing the initial backup the Carbonite service now utilizes 50% of my CPU without backing anything up. I've sent my second request to Carbonite tech support and hoping for some assistance.

"Are we crazy??"

June 14, 2008  |  By davidwheeler

 |  Version: Carbonite Online PC Backup 2.0.193

Cons

I downloaded the program but did not install it as I was busy. Then I thought - I am invited to download the entire contents of my computer to an unknown third party. Am I completely crazy or am I missing something? I'll stick to my detachable 500 gig drive thanks.

"Disaster"

May 27, 2008  |  By tomthabom24

 |  Version: Carbonite Online PC Backup 2.0.193

Cons

The people that give Carbonite such a high rateing must not have ever tryed to use it. I had a computer ********** and lost everthing. I was under a sense of false security that when my PC went down that Carbonite was going to put everything back. Well guess again, out of 3000 files that Carbonite had backed up it would only put back about 300. The files that were most important, like My pictures, My music, other programs that i use it would not install. Carbonite does not tell you what files it can not reinstall while it is backing up your system. You will not find that out until you need to reinstall your files. By that time it's to late. The $50 dollars that i paid Carbonite was like putting my money down a rat hole. I asked for my money back because Carbonite failed to do the job, of course i never heard from them. It's also to complicated for the average user to try to reinstall files from Carbonite because of the directions it gives you.

"Great interface, but with large volumes ... am I sure I'm getting all my data back?"

May 20, 2008  |  By therev

 |  Version: Carbonite Online PC Backup 2.0.193

Pros

Easy to use, runs in the background. Good interface, doesn't hog resources.

Keeps it all current.

Cons

Argh! Took ages to backup (esp for large Outlook pst), but the second stage for backup software is the restore. Oh dear. I've tried many times to restore and in the end resorted to other means (an external hard drive) ... it was just too slow.

In the latest attempt, my archive says there are 46,000 files in my backup. Carbonite tells me I've just restored everything - a total of 40,000 files. What's happened to the other 6,000?

I've asked Carbonite these questions and had no response to my customer support queries (it looks like others are in the same boat).

So overall:

Backup - great

Restore - unconvincing

Customer service - not responding

To me, all three have to be good to be worthwhile. I'm now looking into crashplan.

"Carbonite customer support- nonexistent"

May 17, 2008  |  By scuba4ever

 |  Version: Carbonite Online PC Backup 2.0.193

Pros

My computer crashed on a Saturday afternoon taking all the information with it, as most crashes are apt to do. However, upon re-installing Windows Vista and signing back to the internet, locating Carbonite.com and attempting to reload the software...I was unable to find my password which means then you must contact customer support, but they aren't available but Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm! That is just silly, not worth the money

"Beta software."

May 13, 2008  |  By dimitriz741

 |  Version: Carbonite Online PC Backup 2.0.193

Pros

The idea behind the software/service is great.

Awesome if you have SMALL backup and very reasonable.

Cons

I have a private 10-mbit fiber line and picked a random PC in my office to simulate / evaluate this service.

#1 It took nearly 5 minutes to download their 2MB software.

#2 Installation of the software informed me that it couldn't install because I was missing a DLL. (Found DLL in "other" Windows folder and copied to system32 folder to get it working).

#3 Tagged my whole D:\ for backup. (It contains ~444,000 Files.)

The Initial backup started...and then stopped and then started.., for 3 days it was doing G-d knows what. The "Your backup contains:" showed 6.1GB's and "Awaiting backup:" would randomly jump every few minutes from 70+GB's to 24GB's to 600MB's. I have no idea what it was really doing.

#4 I had enough stopped the process and removed D:\ from backup. Wrote to Carbonite support (from which I haven't heard back whatsoever). Started the backup process again this time adding Individual directories in D:\ (Thinking that the sheer volume of different smaller files might have overloaded the backup engine). Well, so far 5 days later the "Your backup contains :" is showing 26.6GB's and 107,000 files. "Awaiting backup:" shows 7.1GB and 133,000 files to go (with more directories that I still need to add.)

So as you can see I will probably run out of their 30 day trial before I even get a chance of finishing my initial backup. They claim that ALL is dependent on YOUR uplink speed, well mine is 10-mbit and Watchguard firewall gives me complete statistics on traffic. Their support doesn't even bother replying to you whatsoever even though I offered to work with them trying to figure out this and OMG make their software/service better.

"It worked for three months"

May 08, 2008  |  By jduffy09

 |  Version: Carbonite Online PC Backup 2.0.193

Pros

Easy to setup and use

Cons

After about three months my PC started running slower and slower. I found it was because Carbonite was using virtually 100% of my CPU. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling three times, to no avail. I have tried scheduled backups to avoid times when I would be using the computer. That didn't fix the problem. Even when Carbonite is paused it uses 95-100% of my CPU. So, after paying for an entire year's subscription I am left with a program that is useless to me. I may try Mozy, since they offer a monthly subscription, or get an external hard drive and use Nero BackItUp. I'm very disappointed because for the first three months it almost seemed too good to be true. I guess maybe it was.
