Carbon Copy Cloner is a simple, donation-ware utility for cloning entire drives, performing incremental backups, and scheduling ongoing backups. This app has a long track record as one of the most useful and reliable disk utilities available, and its interface and features (especially for scheduling) have only gotten better. Its also kept up with the Mac OS, adding support for HFS+ filesystem compression. Other recent updates have integrated support and documentation into the app better, speeded up recovery of files from damaged volumes, and ensured that Carbon Copy Cloner excludes the Time Machine database.
Carbon Copy Cloner makes it very easy to quickly clone a hard drive (i.e., duplicate every single file on the drive, even at the block level), or you can indicate which files and folders should be copied--and you can also direct it to only copy files that have changed since the last backup. Carbon Copy Cloner can help you schedule regular backups, too, according to any schedule you set, and it can also work with iPods and remote Macs. Carbon Copy Cloner may have a fairly narrow feature set (for example, you can't back up directly to optical disks), but it provides a lot of well-executed functionality at a low price.

After struggling for over a week diagnosing my new WD My Passport Essential external drive and scouring Time Machine troubleshooting forums, I found that my drive is fine and Time Machine is the problem. Too many unexpected errors with random files kept halting Time Machine. Too much need to read log info in Time Machine Buddy that say "error parsing SystemMigration.log and still being confused about what's wrong.
After reading the positive reviews on here, I easily downloaded and installed Carbon Copy Cloner. The instructions clearly describe the features and what to do. All 350GB of my files backed up without a single issue, and they're all accessible on my drive.
There are options to either clone my Mac's entire drive or only back up selected files. You can even make the cloned drive bootable and pick how many versions of files to archive. More options are included.
The developer encourages trying this fully-featured program and donating if satisfied. If this continues to perform well for me, I will certainly make a donation! -

Seamless clone of MacBook hard drive to my G-Tech external RAID drive. Booted up with clone less than 10 seconds after creating and all was intact. Whew! Quality, user friendly software. Thank goodness there is someone looking out for us MacHeads!

Carbon Copy Cloner has become my primary whole-disk backup, supplanting (over-priced) commercial products such as Retrospect.

The only item on my product "wish list" would be the ability to pick a directory as the equivalent of the root of a volume, and clone from there down (e.g., a home directory).

It is fast. It doesn't load the system when it runs as badly as Time Machine and MobileMe sync and it produces a bootable backup.

There is nothing I can complain about.
Summary
I run time machine and MobileMe Sync but I rely on this piece of software more. I have partitioned an external firewire drive so that 1/2 gets Time Machine data the other half CCC data.
