CNET Editors' review
Carbon Copy Cloner is a simple, donation-ware utility for cloning entire drives, performing incremental backups, and scheduling ongoing backups. This app has a long track record as one of the most useful and reliable disk utilities available, and its interface and features (especially for scheduling) have only gotten better. Its also kept up with the Mac OS, adding support for HFS+ filesystem compression. Other recent updates have integrated support and documentation into the app better, speeded up recovery of files from damaged volumes, and ensured that Carbon Copy Cloner excludes the Time Machine database.
Carbon Copy Cloner makes it very easy to quickly clone a hard drive (i.e., duplicate every single file on the drive, even at the block level), or you can indicate which files and folders should be copied--and you can also direct it to only copy files that have changed since the last backup. Carbon Copy Cloner can help you schedule regular backups, too, according to any schedule you set, and it can also work with iPods and remote Macs. Carbon Copy Cloner may have a fairly narrow feature set (for example, you can't back up directly to optical disks), but it provides a lot of well-executed functionality at a low price.

From Mike Bombich:
Clone, synchronize, backup. Schedule and forget it. Try it 'til you trust it.
The key to a successful backup plan is to actually do the backups regularly. When left to a human, the task often gets tacked on to the end of a very long list of other things to do. When you eventually have a catastrophe, the data is simply gone. You know that feeling -- you just lost six years of family photos. Your kids being born, their first birthdays, their first everything. The answer to this is consistent and regular backups, placed on a schedule and handled automatically by your computer.
CCC 3 features a new interface designed to make the cloning and backup procedure more intuitive and more responsive. Users have better control over what gets backed up, and are provided with detailed information about the progress of their backup. In addition to general backup, CCC can also clone one hard drive to another, copying every single block or file to create an exact replica of your source hard drive. CCC's block-level copy offers the absolute best fidelity in the industry!
What's new in this version:
- Added support for HFS+ filesystem compression that was introduced in Snow Leopard.
- To correspond with how the Finder and Disk Utility report these values on Snow Leopard, CCC will now use base 10 for reporting MB and GB on Snow Leopard. CCC will continue to use base 2 to report these values when booted from Leopard or Tiger.
- Improved the performance of backing up a large number of files with extended attributes.
- It is no longer a requirement that CCC be ins... See all new features

Pros

Cons
None that I can think of!

"Makes/updates bootable clone to restore your hard drive"
Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.3
Pros
This does exactly what everyone needs: a way to do a bootable clone restore of your internal hard drive (or restore to a replacement internal drive) if your hard drive ever fails by using CCC3 with an external USB drive.
Cons
None that I know of.
Summary
Easy to understand. Easy to use. Free but donations accepted. This is the best way to insure you will always be able to restore your programs/data/os if your hard drive ever fails. It doesn't get any easier or more flexible or more reliable or in any way better than this.

"Best Backup software from all that I tried."
Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.3
Pros
It offers partial or total backup.
Cons
too many commercials (but one does not have to keep watching)
Summary
I tried several backup products. I congratulate Mike Bombich for having given us the fastest, cheaper and more versaatile.
-
"Easy. Intuitive. Forget it after setup."
Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.3
Pros
Solved my job file backup problem after external hard disk crash.
Cons
Don't have any problems with CCC.
-
"A very useful and trouble-free back-up utility"
Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.3
Pros
Easy to use; just set up your source and target disks, specify the items to be copied (if not the entire disk), and press the Clone button.
Cons
I can't think of anything negative.
Summary
After lots of trouble trying to get Time Machine to work, Carbon Copy Cloner is a very welcome back-up solution.
-
"No support for FAT32 volumes"
Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.3
Pros
Very effective and easy to use with Mac OS and files.
Set-up is very simple and intuitive.
Scheduling is a breeze.Cons
No support for FAT32/64 disk volumes.
Summary
This application is at least a 4 star app if you only care about the Mac universe, but it's at best a 1 or 2 star app if you have a need to share files with Windows PCs. Many of us need FAT32/64 disk volumes so that files can be easily shared with Windows PCs or with Bootcamp partitions on our Macs. Carbon Copy Cloner will not back up these volumes, which is a major fail because it means you need another separate backup application. In my case, I will keep looking for one backup application that does it all so my time with Carbon Copy Cloner will likely be limited.

"Simple, effective, just what I needed!"
Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.3
Pros
Easy to use; simple directions; reliable; faster backup than other tools I've used.
Cons
None; delivers as promised.
Summary
Delivers a simple backup (bootable and incremental) for any size drive; simple scheduling. Just easy to use; and seems to be limited by hardware speed rather than being tied up by the software.
-
"Does just what it promises without any fuss."
Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.3
Pros
copies my hard drive unobtrusively in the background as scheduled. What more could I ask?
Cons
none that I can think of.
