Publisher's description
From Rampart Software Development :When the television mini-series "Brideshead Revisited" starring Jeremy Irons debuted on American television in 1982, it became an instant classic. Fans anxiously awaited the next installment of the 11-episode series, and it paved the way for other British quality productions, such as "Chariots of Fire," "The Jewel in the Crown" and "A Room With a View."The world-wide popularity of these dramas represented a yearning for a lost of way of life - Edwardian England. "Brideshead Revisited" unashamedly glorifies the upper classes, while providing a look into the world of Oxford University in the late 1920s, where the spires and courtyards stood in stark contrast to the decadence of its students. While at Oxford, the narrator, Charles Ryder, begins a relationship with Sebastian Flyte, scion of an immensely wealthy, noble Catholic family, the Marchmains. When Sebastian brings Charles home for a holiday, he meets the rest of the Marchmain clan including sister Julia, to whom Charles becomes attracted. When Sebastian spirals downward into self destruction and alcoholism, Charles begins a relationship with Julia. When author Nancy Mitford asked Waugh how he could behave so abominably yet still consider himself a practicing Catholic, he replied: "You have no idea how much nastier I would be if I was not a Catholic. Without supernatural aid I would hardly be a human being."Evelyn Waugh was born in London in 1903 and educated at Oxford. Fired from a teaching position for public drunkenness, he finally found success in writing. A convert to Roman Catholicism, Waugh was injured during WWII while traveling with his friend Randolph Churchill, and it was during his convalescence that he wrote "Brideshead Revisited" which was published in 1945. Waugh collapsed and died on his toilet on April 10, 1966. Did You Know In the series, Brideshead Castle was actually Castle Howard in Yorkshire, the home of then BBC Chairman, George Howard.
