Works flawlessly and is very user friendly. Has no distortion even when playing at the highest volume. I don't even use headphones anymore unless I'm in public.

Summary
Overall, this little app is very simple to use, looks tasty and compensates effectively for tinny sound and weedy volume. A steal at the price. I paid special offer price of £2.99 during Oct 2012. Highly recommended.

Summary
My Macbook pro was useless when trying to play videos or listen to music with friends unless the room was very small and completely quiet. I would have to wear headphones to enjoy a movie. With Boom I got an extra volume control in addition to the main computer volume and the volume of the program in use. With the Boom volume set less than halfway up I showed a youtube video to my coworkers and it was more than loud enough. Plus it's cheap. It's all I needed it to do. I'll plug in speakers when I want great sound with bass and more, but for on the go use, it's perfect.
My bad...I listed more parameters needed as a con in my original review....It has a nice equalizer feature too that I hadn't realized yet. Man this is awesome. The only con now is that it doesn't come with two twelve inch Subwoofers and a trunk!

"Does what it claims"

Pros
Adds EQ to your Mac audio, along with being able to boost audio level on those occasional audio files or YouTube videos that are recorded so quiet that you cannot hear them. It works well on my 2009.5 MBP.
Cons
A little pricey, but not too bad. Once installed, you have two volume settings, the primary OS X setting, and the secondary Boom setting; also not a huge issue. That's two minor issues, but you can now hear what's being said on the quiet videos.
Summary
I was frustrated because I was trying to listen to a YouTube video on my MacBook Pro, and I couldn't get the audio level loud enough to understand what was being said (it was a lecture). Even with headphones, I couldn't easily understand what was being said. I had remembered reading about Boom, so I installed it to see if it would allow me to hear the lecture, and it did. Problem solved!

Allows normal, loud, volume on Macs that are set to too low a volume, such as my MacBook. + EQUALIZER!

None anymore! v1.2 cures the unwanted logout bug.
Summary
I wrote an earlier review here for v1.1, which had an odd unwanted logout bug. Now it's CURED! That leaves Boom v1.2 being essentially PERFECT. I am now using it 24/7 and enjoy it.
My old 11/2006 MacBook had its volume set drastically low by default. Now I am the boss and I can set the volume to whatever I like within the range to the speaker capability. The boosted volume level can be set via the Boom menu bar icon. You can also set your own HotKeys for raising and lowering the boosted volume. Meanwhile, your Mac's volume keys work as usual.
Then add to that, a 10 frequency band equalizer. Boom provides 8 equalization presets: Flat, Bass Boost, Treble Boost, Soft, Loud, Music, Vocals and Movie. To make your own presets, just drag the 10 band nodes to where you like and name your new preset. If you don't like the name, change it. If you don't like your preset, delete it.
Another feature is the ability to easily edit the metadata volume settings for audio and video files. Drag files into the Boost File interface, select which files you want to edit, set your desired new volume, choose where to save the edited files and hit the 'Boost' button.
Also tossed in is the ability to send feature suggestions directly to the developers. How often do you see that offered in apps?
CONCLUSION: A decent price for great volume control of your Mac and your media files and a decent Mac audio equalizer. It is now on my 'Must Have' list. Therefore it gets 5 stars. -
