Editors' Review

BlazeDVD lets you play DVDs on your computer anytime you want, and it offers a full set of controls to enhance your viewing experience. With the app's streamlined navigation, all you have to do is pop in your movie and press play. It also lets you save and convert your DVDs into a format compatible with your iPad, iPhone, iPod, or PSP.

High-quality playback: The image that this program produces is great, and to go along with it, you also get 7.1 audio channels and picture in picture. Of course, the viewing experience will only be as good as the monitor you have. But if you have the right equipment, you'll be able to enjoy a high-quality scene.

Compact controller: The controller for this program is compact and efficient, with all kinds of useful tools packed into a convenient space. You can toggle between full and small screen modes, and you can manage exactly what you want to watch, all with a few quick clicks.

Occasional crashes: The program did crash a few times on us during testing. In all cases, opening it again resolved the problem, but it can be a bit frustrating, especially if it happens frequently or in the middle of a movie.

Floating controller: When you're in fullscreen mode, and you bring up the controller, it floats a bit higher on the screen than seems ideal. Especially if you're using the controller a lot, and so don't want to hide it, it could definitely interfere with your viewing experience at times.

Bottom Line

Blaze DVD gives you the ability to play DVDs on your computer, and to save and convert them into a format compatible with your iPad, iPhone, iPod, or PSP. It does have some bugs, but overall it works well. The free trial offers limited functionality, but it lets you get a sense of what the app's controls are like. The full version costs $49.95.
