"Absolutely Useless"
Version: BitDefender Free Edition 10.0
Pros
The GUI is reasonably attractive?
Cons
Unless you are an expert and can do your own registry edits. Good luck getting this program completely removed. It is difficult to do to say the least.
The Antivirus slows down your system, causes system freezes. Update fails.Summary
I can't discourage this product enough. DO NOT USE IT.
If you want a good FREE antivirus program stick with Avast or AVG. -
"Do not Download"
Version: BitDefender Free Edition 10.0
Pros
NONE. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE FREE SOFTWARE.
Cons
I downloaded the free version and I was never able to get a completed scan. 10 to 15 minutes into a scan it always froze.
Summary
DO NOT DOWNLOAD, PERIOD.
Worst part, you can not completely remove the software from your hard drive and I have tried everything!; It is password protected. For the last 6 months the supposedly deleted software restarts on its own freezing my computer or a pop-up screen hawking its new low purchase price appears. -
"Slows down computer like mad!!"
Version: BitDefender Free Edition 10.0
Pros
Guess detecting could be as good as other anti virus'
Cons
After installing bitdefender my computer takes hours to do anything... Was alright before!
Summary
I've had the 30 day free trial of the 2012 edition installed for 1 week now and that was enough! My computer's slower than ever!! Never experienced this with other anti virus software and I've tried loads...

"A second opinion AV"
Version: BitDefender Free Edition 10.0
Pros
-Nice GUI, on demand scans, scheduled scans
-Dynamic auto multi updates (one of the best in free AV)Cons
-Uninstalling is a nightmare even with Bit Dfender uninstall tool
-Significantly impacts booting time & memory usageSummary
It is a nice second opinion AV scanner for many types of malwares.
Vey thorough but slow on demand scans. Good scheduled scanning options. It also has one of the highest virus signature auto updates among free AV softwares.
Downside is the slower booting & is a memory hog for smaller RAMs.
Uninstalling is a big problem. Even if you opt not to re start to software from next re start, it launches the process any way after re boot. Stopping the process with elevated admin rights is next to impossible as the software protects itself from being stopped. You will encounter the same problem if you attempt to stop the start up registry entry from System Configuration module with admin rights.
The BitDefender's own uninstall tool too has a tough time stopping the services & delete the files even after multiple cycles.
I was successful in completly removing all registry entries and folders on one of my laptops but not so lucky in my second one despite using Revo Uninstaller Pro (using installation log feature). -
"Sneaky marketing"
Version: BitDefender Free Edition 10.0
Pros
Does the job
Cons
Sneaky marketing - why do existing users get emailed a 6 months free when they renew for another year, when new users get a full year free when they buy a year's subscription?
User support is very bad - don't expect any. -
"Works great for older operating systems"
Version: BitDefender Free Edition 10.0
Pros
One of the few that will work on systems with an OS older than XP or Win2K
Cons
There are better products out there for Vista and Better (see Microsoft Security Essentials and othrs)
Summary
If you still have an older computer but want to remain safe on the internet this is the Security Software for you.

"May not work for Windows ME and/or older machines"
Version: BitDefender Free Edition 10.0
Pros
It is free and purported to work on older versions of Windows, unlike most other antivirus programs at present.
Cons
I installed it on an old Gateway LC (AMD K6-2-500, 56 Mb RAM) running Windows ME with no problems and good performance before the installation. It completely swamped the machine, rendering it totally unusable.
Summary
It gets one star because I was only able to remove it with "add-remove" in Control Panel after using msconfig to shut off all startups and rebooting. In order to even run msconfig, I had to go into safe-mode first. If the machine was too weak to handle BitDefender, the installation or specifications should warn about this before installation. The program may be free, but our time is of some value.

"Good product, terrible customer service"
Version: BitDefender Free Edition 10.0
Pros
The product was easy to use and caught some stuff that my previous antivirus software had not.
Cons
Customer service is terrible--the worst I've ever encountered.
Summary
The product worked fine on my Windows Vista. In fact, I bought the Mac version for our new iMac. I ran into trouble loading it on a Windows 7 box. There was some initial mixup with the company due to me using the Windows and Mac version. When I explained this, I received the same initial response from customer service--word for word. It was like they never read the second e-mail.
I was finally directed to another customer service. After waiting a few days with no response, I bought Norton. On the fourth day, customer service finally got back to me. I do not recommend anyone to buy BitDefender. -
"System Requirements"
Version: BitDefender Free Edition 10.0
Pros
I have used BitDefender for 4 years now and have think it is one of the top AV products on the market today. Just one point of advise for those of you who think BitDefender takes up 90% of your resources,
Cons
Rember to keep in mind you are reviewing a free verision, break out the whole $25.00/year.
Summary
Check the system requirements, XP users should be using 512 mb ram, I recommend a GB. If you like you can always go thru the SYMANTIC nightmare!
