For Gmail aficionados, one must-have Firefox add-on is the Better Gmail extension from Lifehacker editor Gina Trapani. It's basically a collection of her favorite Greasemonkey scripts, nicely packaged for all of us too lazy to install Greasemonkey and all of the individual scripts separately.
The list of what it does is long, so we'll try to summarize. It converts the attachment paper clip to an appropriate icon. It gives you a conversation preview window, a search-by-date option, a filter creation assistant, and label colors. It provides three skins (although we liked Google's original layout the best) and it lets you save search strings. It contains an attachment reminder.
It does not do your dishes.
You can easily turn on or off a feature through the preferences window, which brings us to one of the drawbacks of the add-on: it can only be accessed through Firefox's extension management window. More specific information and instructions are available at the Lifehacker site, and are essential for knowing how to use some of the features, like label colors. Despite these quibbles, we loved this extension and found it extremely helpful.

Better Gmail is a compilation of work done by several Greasemonkey scripters, including Mihai Parparita, Ming (Amos) Zhang, norcimo and Moktoipas. The scripts were compiled using Anthony Lieuallen's Greasemonkey Compiler.
Version 0.6.1: Fixed bug where skin would get applied to all sites introduced in 0.6.

Version: Better Gmail 0.6.1
Pros: Viewing Gmail with this extension added is awesome. I especially like the page preview.
Cons: I still don't really know how to edit or fully utilize the Search (contacts vs cookies) option. This 0.6.1 version doesn't have as much stuff as the new 0.8 version available from the developer.

"sounds like a great item to get"
Pros: its only limited to Firefox (FF)
Cons: i use NetScape it use IE7 and FF and get update 7/24 a week
hold off till its all set for both or NetScape browser

Pros: Makes gmail near-perfect. Looks better more importantly works better.
Cons: Can use more themes. The "Toggle font" don't seem to do anything?

"Extends the utility of G-Mail by adding new functionality."
Pros: The most readily visible additions that immediately add to G-Mail's usefulness are the ability to call G-Mail from embedded "Mailto:" links, the grouping of what are called "persistent searches, and the unique icons assigned to specific types of file attachments.
Cons: I've noticed that G-Mail definitely responds more slowly.
