Previously known only in small circles as the ""Media OS,"" BeOS 5 Personal Edition is now available as a free download. Thanks to new innovative technology from Be, you can download BeOS 5 Personal Edition via a Web browser and store it as a file within Windows. No repartitioning is necessary, and launching BeOS 5 is as simple as double-clicking an icon on your desktop. This update incorporates the latest changes that will be released in the upcoming BeOS 5.0.1 patch, as well as some important licensing changes.

i have the same problem i downloaded beos 5.0, installed it, made the boot disk, and when i click on start beos it asks me to insert the boot disk and reboot. however when i do this, it doesnt boot to beos. it boots the normal way to windows. can someone help me?

it is fast, easy to use. cd burning is fast!

terminal is too complex to use, if you want to install this on a hard disk, DO NOT use it on the same disk you put it on or you have to insert the boot floppy EVERY tim you want to use BE os.

I've used BeOS in it's inception, and was relatively impressed with its performance and ease of use. It reminded me a lot of Mac OS at the time, except that this is before the era of X and Mac did have stability issues when used for massive projects. However, this OS is now really showing its age. If you have any old Pentiums, PII's, K6, or other machines between 200 and 500 mhz, try it out. You might just like it.
(btw kgrantz, thanks for letting the world that doesn't pay attention to microsoft technet know that bill's evil empire will molest yet another good product and call it their own.) -

Sure, it's almost 4 years old, but the OS doesn't supoprt any hardware that is available... even from that era. Downloading newer versions (available elsewhere) didn't make it any better either

This is not the best distro out, many new machines will have driver issues, try BeosMax or 'try' to find PHOS or DAN0 or better yet, purchase Yellowtab's Zeta. BEOS is the coolest little OS ever made, good looks, fast, easy to use, easy to develop on. not for the mainstream, but cool for the hardcore

Don't Blame the Be for not installing 'em drivers for your hardware. You should only blame yourself for not knowin' how much passion Be requires to look for 'em things... In other words, if you got 'em la-Z-y ( | )s out there, go get yourself the overpriced WINXP, but Be-aware of a lot of bugs, worms, viruses and of course drivers not workin'.
