Using profiles to define where and how to back up files isn't a new idea, but Backup2005 Pro jazzes up the concept with innovative and useful features. For example, Backup Set Map shows a graphical representation of backup profiles and their destination folders. You can use the map to modify backup sets and quickly change the target locations for multiple profiles. The program comes with predefined backup sets for Outlook as well as for Windows settings and the Registry, and you can create a new set from existing ones. The interface is nothing special, and we missed an in-program help file, but we like the program's versatility, as it allows users to run it in Beginner, Standard, or Expert mode. You can queue up tasks for the program to implement one by one. Backup2005 Pro manages a catalog database where you can find details of each backup job. You can consult that catalog and search all backup jobs without opening individual backup files or even restoring a single file. The program saves data to FTP locations or to CD and DVD burners, using three compression methods. You also can choose to encrypt backup files. This strong functionality ought to make Backup2005 Pro attractive to business and power users. At $65, however, it's competing against commercial packages with more polish.
