The ancient city of Babylon was a crossroads of cultures and languages, and the program Babylon makes good on its linguistic heritage. It can translate 31 languages from your desktop, offers a huge gallery of glossary add-ons, and gives direct access to Wikipedia results in 20 languages. In addition to deeper language libraries, the latest version introduces a new, streamlined interface, single-click document and Web site translation, and a new language detection-feature that recognizes languages without user input.

Babylon translates individual words and phrases on the fly by highlighting and right-clicking or using a hot-key combination that can be adjusted in the Settings menu. Babylon 8 also introduces a "globe" option that keeps the program running in the background and available on your desktop. You can listen to a computerized voice pronounce words in English, but you'll need to add more text-to-speech engines to hear words in other languages. Another helpful feature lets you quickly convert currency, measurements, or time zones, and you can create your own personalized glossaries with links and embedded images.

If you regularly need translations across all your programs and Web surfing, Babylon's default setting to load at start-up will probably seem like a boon. If that's not what you're looking for, you can adjust it under the Miscellaneous tab in Settings. Resource usage spiked when translating full documents, but not overly so--it worked rapidly and didn't interfere with a simultaneously running media player. The full-featured 30-day trial offers plenty of time to decide whether Babylon is valuable to you. The wide array of features and impressive options for adding custom content help this reference tool earn a top rating.

"EULA says freeware. after 5 uses it blocks u for pay"

    April 23, 2014   |   By htfdytur

    Version: Babylon 10.0

    Pros

There are no pro's for such a deceitful program

    Cons

The agreement or EULA says it is freeware but it only allows you to use it 5 times and then you can only chose one of 2 options. Either pay to upgrade or delete it. I chose to delete it. CNet needs to protect its integrity by flagging this program and either
delete it from CNets list or force them to honor the Freeware agreement. There is no warning that you are in a trial period when you install it.

    Summary

CNet should ban Babylon until they own up to the truth and either label it free to try or make it truly free like they advertise!!!!
If Babylon is allowed to continue on CNet it will damage CNet's reputation!

    "NOT FREE!!!! SO DISAPPOINTED"

    December 30, 2013   |   By GinnyLee8

    Version: Babylon 10.0

    Pros

I didn't get a chance to use it long enough to say if there are any pros

    Cons

After I translated 15 words it told me I had to upgrade.

    Summary

It's not really free software. It would be more accurate to label it as "FREE TO TRY" or "Trial Software". I don't appreciate wasting my time reading about the software, downloading it, learning how to use it, subjecting my computer to unnecessary tracking cookies, potential malware or browser hijackers only to find out 15 trial words later that I've been scammed.
I understand that Babylon software is in business to make money, but labeling it as free software to trick people into downloading it is bad business practices. I can understand requiring a user to upgrade if someone is looking for more intermediate or advanced translations or product usage like grammar instruction or heavy verb conjugation. I actually did like it, for 10 minutes. Now it's useless software on my desktop.

"Does not do simultaneous translation of emails."

    November 06, 2013   |   By ldt43

    Version: Babylon 10.0

    Pros

Seems to do good quality translations

    Cons

The Babylon website suggests that the software has a special feature for translating emails. Not so. You still have to cut and paste text between your email page and Babylon's translation page.

    Summary

Why pay over $125 for this software, when Google Translate does just as good a job for FREE.

"WARNING: Babylon is a Trojan Virus !"

    October 21, 2013   |   By StopBabylon

    Version: Babylon 10.0

    Pros

    does tranlate

    Cons

WARNING: Babylon's translation software in a Trojan Virus
It will attempt to hijack the user's system by adding the Babylon Toolbar, which modifies your search results and feeds pop-up adds. It can be very difficult to get rid of this virus because it modifies many different programs! (Particularly all your browsers and Microsoft office programs). YOU WILL BE VIOLATED EVEN WHEN YOU LOAD THE PAID VERSION FROM THEIR SITE! The free versions only allow 8 translations...but continue to feed nonstop ads until you figure out how to remove all the crap they installed with their program (took me hours to clean up the mess). Babylon also only translates common words...Google translate is much better with any type technical documents.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylon_(software)

    Summary

Use Google translate for simple text translations...better results. Look elsewhere is you want file translation

"A useful teaching and learning tool"

    September 01, 2013   |   By chapasebastia

    Version: Babylon 10.0

    Pros

Easy to use interface that allows in text translation and included dictionary results

    Cons

    The occasional bad translation

    Summary

I have been working as a private language tutor for a number of years. While I prefer my students to not "translate" the language, I do find times when it can be useful. I try to engage students by using content that they find interesting (e.g. ebooks, online magazines, news, websites, etc.). Babylon's interface allows them to translate as they go, rather than having to stop and flip through a dictionary or go to an online translation site, making the learning process smoother and more enjoyable. I have been using Babylon since the previous version and really have no complaints, other than the obvious occasional bad translation.

    "Very helpful for students"

    July 08, 2013   |   By donnyholmen

    Version: Babylon 10.0

    Pros

Accurate translations, dictionary and Wikipedia results, works with everything

    Cons

    None so far

    Summary

I know that Babylon is known for translation, but what I really like about the software is the single click dictionary and Wikipedia results.
Many of the papers I read for class are online or in pdf and the Babylon software has been really helpful because I can just click on the terms I don't know without having to switch windows - it just makes things easier.

"A Quick Way to Kill a Good Product: False Advertising"

    July 04, 2013   |   By lascellesclarke

    Version: Babylon 10.0

    Pros

Very good product. The best I've seen... so far.

    Cons

Advertised as "Free" but really isn't.
This product offers only 8 instances of translation, then, without forewarning, stops translating and prompts you to upgrade. Upgrade here means being held at ransom by Babylon, as the only 2 options available tie you to monthly payments with no end in sight-so anyone expecting to be given the choice of single-purchase will receive a rude awakening.
In my case, after recovering from the disappointment of the 8-trial use, I decided to overlook the misleading 'FREE" ad as well as the non-disclosure, only to find out I would never finish paying for this product.
I took my grouse to their Live Chat and as soon as the chat operator saw my complaint, the response was, "Chat session has ended. You are not currently in a chat session."
Now, people don't mind paying a few dollars (or more)for the products of others' hard work-as long as they know upfront exactly the truth of what they are getting into; and as long as they are not held at ransom thereafter.

    Summary

High ethical standards will always make the difference between success and failure in any business.
For their chat operator to have gone silent while in active session only corroborated my analysis of Babylon and its marketers: they need to go back to the drawing board.

    "Definitely the best translation software"

    July 02, 2013   |   By jamee_21au90

    Version: Babylon 10.0

    Pros

Nice interface, one click translation, integrates well with other programs

    Cons

    Not every feature is free

    Summary

I started with Babylon version 8 and recently upgraded to 10. The free version is really good considering it's free. The translations are fast and accurate and the interface is easy to use. You do have to pay if you want some of the "advanced" features, which I decided to do since I translate a lot of documents for work. It has definitely been worth it - the Office document feature that translates things without needing reformatting is incredibly useful. Overall, I would absolutely recommend Babylon for anyone who needs translation.

    "Good program but horrible support"

    June 23, 2013   |   By FM1030

    Version: Babylon 10.0

    Pros

Its simple, has really good options

    Cons

The worst support team in the world. If you order for help, they start to sell you more thing without any regards to your problem. Some stuff does not work and you never know what you have bought until its installed and even invoice wont tell you what you bought and if you mail, they start sending you private emails

    Summary

Not worth the money at all with the low life product support team

    "Solid translation software"

    June 17, 2013   |   By collinschilke1

    Version: Babylon 10.0

    Pros

Easy to use, doesn't interrupt work flow, good translations

    Cons

    Computers aren't human

    Summary

Babylon software is really good, and always works well. I have used a few different versions over the years and the most recent is really quite good. I would say that Babylon is the best company out there in terms of translation, but they face the same problem as anyone else when it come to context, culture etc., computers aren't human.
