Chances are, there's something on your computer that you don't want other people to see, whether it's financial information, client files, trade secrets, or evidence of your erotic photography hobby. AxCrypt makes it easy to encrypt all types of files, ensuring that your sensitive data is safe from prying eyes.

The program integrates easily into Windows, appearing as an item in any file's context menu. Users simply right-click on the item they want to encrypt, select AxCrypt from the menu, and choose Encrypt. The program lets users select a password for the file and optionally create a key-file. As its name would suggest, the key-file is designed to function as a key that can unlock encrypted files. It's meant to be kept on a removable storage device, such as a USB drive, so that it can only be used when the file's owner inserts the removable device into the computer with the encrypted file. In addition to encrypting the original file, the program also lets users encrypt a copy, encrypt a copy to .EXE, and shred and delete files. The program has a Help file in the form of an online PDF, and it's quite thorough and contains plenty of screenshots. Overall, we found that AxCrypt is both powerful and easy to use, and we think that it's a great way to keep files secure for users of all experience levels.

AxCrypt installs politely and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

"I found the App difficult to use"

    June 02, 2014   |   By winguard7

    Version: AxCrypt 1.7.2976

    Pros

I found the App difficult to use and at one point I got a error and the program closed.
In the end I found another program named WinGuard Pro which was free and really straight-forward to use.

    Cons

I found the App difficult to use

    Summary

Best look around, there are free programs like WinGuard Pro that will do the job of encryption.

    "Installs malware on your computer!"

    January 09, 2014   |   By kentman333

    Version: AxCrypt 1.7.2976

    Pros

    I did not find any.

    Cons

I tried to install this software it never even installed correctly. I then ran a malware detection program and it found three malwares that Axycrypt had installed through Open Candy There is no place I found that you could de-select installing Open Candy as other post have stated. It is installed automatically.

    Summary

Avoid this program as it will mess up your computer

"Strong protection, NO CRAPWARE (read "Pros")."

    November 23, 2013   |   By yknotdave1

    Version: AxCrypt 1.7.2976

    Pros

Easy setup on Windows 7 64bit (and NO CRAPWARE OR OTHER 3rd PARTY SOFTWARE IF YOU JUST PAY ATTENTION during the ENTIRE installation process), intuitive interface, and so far, I can't gain access to an encrypted folder or file unless I use AxCrypt to decrypty it.
Something I've found useful and time-saving (see "Cons"), for decrypting multiple folders or files, is that it can remember your passphrase so you don't have to enter it each time. However, remember to reinstate the passphrase requirement by using the "Clear the Passphrase Memory" selection in the right-click menu if you don't want anyone else to have easy access. You'll have to do this for each file and folder during either encryption or decryption. Makes sense to me.

    Cons

In my opinion, it takes longer to either encrypt or decrypt than other programs (although the others' protection isn't as strong). Just something to keep in mind for large files that you need to work with (for an 8GB folder, it took over 5 minutes, either way).
Other than that, it's been a pleasure.

    Summary

Super-easy setup, easy to use. I was trying out a few encryption programs at once and, after using AxCrypt to guard a few files, I accidentally uninstalled the program. When I tried to open one of those files, I noticed it had a .axx suffix. I Googled that and found my mistake, reinstalled AxCrypt, and opened my files with the saved passphrase which was still intact. WHEW!! Thought I had permanently lost access to those files. Relief!
    Thank you goes to Axantum!

    "Beware of unwanted 'extras'"

    August 02, 2013   |   By rwlang_cnet

    Version: AxCrypt 1.7.2976

    Pros

never got to try it....too busy recovering from all the extra junk that got loaded...see cons

    Cons

I have to agree w/ Lizette; I was very careful to uncheck boxes not to load extras; yet still Bing took over my background (even when I changed background, Bing logo still there), Bing toolbar loaded, Firefox was disabled and I could not longer start it. An hour later after system restore and uninstall/reinstall Firefox, I was thankfully back to where I was before I started.

    Summary

    I learned my lesson

    "Tries to install hidden software"

    July 04, 2013   |   By LizetteDM

    Version: AxCrypt 1.7.2976

    Pros

    None that I know of

    Cons

Deceptive installation. Tries to install 2 hidden software files. There is no listings of the software to be installed. You need to choose to not install extra software to even see the files that will be installed along with the program.

    Summary

Beware! Hidden Crap ware is part of the software installed by this program if you are not careful.

    "So far so good"

    June 08, 2013   |   By ryanrdb123

    Version: AxCrypt 1.7.2976

    Pros

Works as promised so far. Can password protect single word files like I wanted pretty easily by just right clicking & selecting the axcrypt option.

    Cons

Had a weird *little* problem at first after encrypting, opening, closing, & then trying to open the same word document right after. Said the program was being used by another process so I could just open it as "read only". Easy fix though... just ctrl-alt-del and ended the axcrypt processes & works perfect now.

    Summary

It doesn't install a bunch of crap like another 1-star review suggested... Gives you the option, but all you have to do is un-check the box before you press install...

    "Absolutely excellent"

    May 19, 2013   |   By francois_fermier

    Version: AxCrypt 1.7.2976

    Pros

Simple, just right click. Works perfectly.

    Cons

None here at all. And the fellow who complained about the Open Candy must be meaner than Scrooge. All you need to is just un-check a single box if you don't want the suggested extra software. Takes less than one second. Yet the guy made such a big deal out of it. Shame on him.

    Summary

I set up a password which am keeping in a safe place, and then with this AxCrypt am ready to go. Works perfectly.

    "Simplicity"

    March 07, 2013   |   By gat0gelat0

    Version: AxCrypt 1.7.2976

    Pros

Works flawlessly on my 64-bit computer. Installs a right-click context menu line that can quickly encrypt a file or folder (all files within the folder). This is developed by a one-man team (see Axantum.com/axcrypt for more about him and open-source work.)

    Cons

I don't see any right now.

    Summary

Very simple. I had a strong encyption software called Folder Lock installed on my pc/laptop. I didn't know about Axcrypt when I bought FL. Now I use Axcrypt more and more. Cheaper (make a donation), faster, open source, convenient. No software to wait for and which takes resources. Just engage your mouse for a right-click or two and you're done.

"Used to be very good, but now..."

    February 05, 2013   |   By AnneRamsay01

    Version: AxCrypt 1.7.2976

    Pros

Sadly in a vain attempt to make some money the developers have packages the software in crapware i.e. OpenCandy so when installing all sorts of rubbish tries to be installed. I would have preferred the developer to just be upfront and charge, I'd of paid! Oh well.

    Cons

other than the installer this is a very good program
