CNET Editors' review
Avidemux for Mac is a video editing and encoding app. It is not available from the App Store but is on many download sites. Avidemux for Mac installs easily.
At its core, Avidemux for Mac is designed to allow you to cut a larger video into a smaller one, although this is not a full-featured video editor. Avidemux for Mac also provides encoding capabilities, converting videos from one codec to another. Avidemux for Mac can also act as a filter, applying specific filter effects to a video clip (although the filter effects are somewhat limited compared to much more expansive commercial packages). The app supports the most common Mac video formats, including AVI, MP4, ASF, and a few others. A scripting language is built into Avidemux for Mac that allows for batching of jobs, as well as repeating common processes. The interface is simple to work with and you can start using Avidemux for Mac within five minutes, thanks to the layout of the windows and options.
We used Avidemux for Mac for a few tasks. The first was simply slicing up a vacation video and presenting a shortened version, and it handled this task well. We then applied color equalization to a few scenes, and used the crop filter to zoom in and out in others. Finally, we saved the video in several formats. Avidemux for Mac was easy to use throughout all these tasks and we had zero issues with it.

"Total waste of time."
Version: Avidemux 2.5.4
Pros
None...it's a total waste of your time to download this product. You will get an indication that it's downloading...then you'll open it and you'll see an icon to start the program. You will click on that icon and it will blink and act as if something is about to open...and then...nothing. You will go through that process several times, with the frustration level rising on each attempt. Then you'll likely search the internet with search phrases like "Avidemux2 + mac + won't open" and you'll get lists of other people with the same problem.
Save yourself the time...AVOID THIS TURD. I'm really glad I didn't buy the "premium" version. I can't imagine how mad I'd be if I paid $30 for something that didn't work and then had to spend time on the phone trying to get my money back.Cons
It's all con.
Summary
Turd...run...run away from this download.

"Downloaded, but wouldn't install."
Version: Avidemux 2.5.4
Pros
None. It won't install.
Cons
It won't install!
Summary
Why is this on CNet if it won't install?

"It won't help you in your most basic needs."
Version: Avidemux 2.5.4
Pros
It's freeware
Cons
Too basic
Too simple
Awkward interfaceSummary
Very basic interface, won't allow you to easily combine video and audio tracks. Some buttons won't respond to your clicks and won't show a pop-up or help balloon when you place your mouse pointer still over some buttons. I don't recommend this app.

"Virtualdub type video tool now on OS X"
Version: Avidemux 2.5.4
Pros
Gives you a much needed, near-VirtualDub functionality on OS X.
Cons
The interface is a straight copy of the Linux version so it looks very awkward.
Summary
CURRENT VERSION, 2.5.4 IS OUTDATED, AND HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED FOR LION. To get this running on OS X 10.7, follow this instruction to get AVIdemux working.

"Installs and quits"

Cons
Installs and immediately quits after opening.
Summary
Don't waste your time.

"Did not work for me"
Version: Avidemux 2.5.4
Pros
None - it doesn't install.
Cons
It never installs
Summary
It downloaded and appeared to install and placed an icon at on the Dock at bottom of the screen on my iMac but vanishes when you try to run it.
I sent a notify to their support but never got a response. I guess this product has potential.

"Can't stress how important this program really is"
Version: Avidemux 2.5.4
Pros
Gives you a much needed, near-VirtualDub functionality on OS X.
Cons
The interface is a straight copy of the Linux version so it looks very awkward.
Summary
If you haven't heard of or used VirtualDub or AVIsynth before, STAY THE **** OFF this program. This is not MSPaint, a stupid program whereby you can pick up simply by waving the mouse. The internet is replete with stripped down, idiot-proof video "converters" for your precious iPods. All you have to do is search.
OS X Lion users, follow this instruction to get AVIdemux working.
