- "Make viruses walk the plank with Avast"
- Version reviewed: Avast Professional Edition 4.6
Avast Professional Edition skillfully scans your PC and several programs for viruses, although configuring it is not for the faint of heart.
Immediately after installation, the program asks if you want to schedule an antivirus scan of your local hard drives at system start. You'll notice two icons in your system tray after installing Avast: one to configure the functions and another to activate the virus recovery database.
Well-designed, Avast scans executables, inbound and outbound e-mails, and P2P programs such as Kazaa, Limewire, and Morpheus. Instant messages received from several messenger programs are inspected for harmful viruses as well. The program was able to block URLs and common file operations such as renaming and deleting. We appreciated the sensitivity adjusters to get protection to desired levels including normal, high, or customized.
We must say this application did slow down our system while surfing and using other programs. Many of its configurations require intermediate know-how or better. Fortunately, it has a generous 60-day trial. Don't let the steep learning curve turn you off; Avast safeguards your system at optimum levels.

Version: Avast Professional Edition 4.6
Pros: ...yes, it did do a good job, but...
Cons: ...it doesn't update fast as someone wants you to believe and it is so thorough, that it misses some things and it slowed my computer by almost 80%. It slowed things down so much that some programs would stop running. Good, but needs a lot of work. Recommend it to your in-laws, but only if you don't like them very much.

Version: Avast Professional Edition 4.6
Pros: Well it is a good product indeed. It found viruses that other AVs couldn't. It doesn't hog resources, like some AVs out there. I would recommend it highly.
Cons: It cannot scan files that are encryted or corrupted. I find this a potential hazzard to a pc.. since a virus could hide within the file... and pose a threat once released onto the pc if not detected. Then again.. once in a compressed file, the virus cannot harm the pc.. only when released, it can.
Also.. it doesn't show a scan window when a schedule scan is taking place... :( please Alwil.. I beg of you.. Please add this feature along with a firewall, privacy control and web filtering feature..
You can call it Avast Internet Security Suite.. please make this a reality.. Oh.. the AV must be able to detect and remove all spyware... :).. thankz..
