This impressive software provides the same steadfast protection of well-known antivirus programs, yet it's surprisingly free.
Avast Home Edition guards your PC and the network with multiple shields that scan executables and files. You can select parameters for scanning, and even choose wildcards to exclude specific file types. You can adjust the sensitivity level for the program's detectors when it comes to scanning downloaded files, instant messages, e-mails, and a host of P2Ps. Its efficient interface opens up window after window to tweak its settings to your liking, for novice to advanced level protection.
Though it took quite some time to run, we're impressed with this application's boot-time antivirus scan. Fortunately, if you're in a pinch you can bypass it. If malicious contents are detected, Avast comes to the rescue with handy virus cleanup tools. Some decent PC controls are even handed out here. You can block certain URLs and file operations, such as writing to files or even renaming, deleting or formatting them.
With immediate real-time protection, clockwork updates, and much more, this free software is highly regarded in our book.

Version: Avast Home Edition 4.7.1098.80207
"Absolutely the best out there!"
Pros: Way better than norton and mcafee.I have paid for noton 2007 and mcafee 2007.I can tell you with all honesty that avast has caught viruses and trojans when those other programmes were sleeping!.
Cons: Im not sure if it still conflicts with zone alarm firewall which by the way is also a 5 star free app.Can anyone fill me in on this?.Thanks.

Version: Avast Home Edition 4.7.1098.80207
Pros: Everything, Avast! Lets you scan at boot-time removing annoying start up malware. It even blocks the malware from downloading with the web shield and If you get hacked allot such as on AOL this warns you and automatically in corner 123.45.67 is attempting to connect to 123.45.89 i know because my friend is on AOL and his avast warns him about him getting hacked. I have used avast for years now and it is very rare to have problems with Avast!. also Mrate your probably a worker for AVG or Norton, Because you say it has lots of false positives when it has only about %2 false positives, the only time it has false positives is when you set the shields to custom security strength and change settings to strong virus checking. So far i cant find any anti-virus to match with its light memory usage and low false positives. AVG, Norton and McAfee are not even close to beating Avast!. Avast! Home and Avast! Pro don't have many diffrences, if you cant afford Avast! Pro, home edition is near enough same security.
Cons: Updates Sometimes slow the computer down for about 30 seconds, but then the computer goes fast again
